Iconic Fashion Influences in the Music Industry: David Bowie
When reflecting on music history, there aren’t many figures as puzzling as David Bowie. Bowie was a British singer-songwriter who rose to fame in the late 1960s. Throughout his music career, Bowie received 71 awards and had 186 total nominations. His impact on the music industry goes beyond his singing abilities. The fashion choices made by Bowie are a huge part of what made him a household name.
Bowie used clothes are more than an accessory. For him, clothes were a form of self-expression and a way to push boundaries. Bowie’s on-stage alter ego known as 'Ziggy Stardust' is defined by him as “an alien rock star who arrives on an Earth that is dying due to a lack of natural resources.” Ziggy came on stage with flame-red hair, extravagant costumes, and extraterrestrial makeup. Japanese designer Kansai Yamamoto created some of Bowie's most iconic costumes, including the bold and theatrical outfits worn during the Ziggy Stardust era. This alter ego blurred the lines between femininity and masculinity for Bowie. This made for a very diverse approach to fashion, which helped pave the way for so many performers after him. Later in his career, Bowie partnered with designers such as Alexander McQueen, whose innovative designs complemented Bowie's ever-evolving style.
