Jack White - Blunderbuss
Jack White is performing on Saturday Night Live this weekend (maybe he’ll have already performed by the time I post this, but oh well), and it’s completely unintentional that I picked up a copy of his 2012 debut solo album, Blunderbuss. I wasn’t sure if this or 2014’s Lazaretto were my favorite, and I think it’s his sophomore album, because I remember liking certain songs on this thing a lot, but the whole album felt like a mess of styles, versus a cohesive record. Lazaretto was more of a blues-rock album, whereas Blunderbuss is a blues, country, and folk album that has a lot of great stuff, just no focused sound and not enough energy. I found a copy of it at Half Price Books, and I was looking for heavier stuff, but I mainly just found really cool stuff, including this album.
I’ve been listening to a lot of Alabama Shakes’ 2012 debut, Boys& Girls, so early 2010s blues-rock has been on the brain. I also found Gary Clark Jr’s debut, 2012’s Blak and Blu, and finding Blunderbuss was the cherry on top. I ultimately grabbed it, because like I said, I wasn’t sure if I liked this one a lot or his 2014 sophomore more. I like both albums, but I remember always preferring Lazaretto, even though there is a lot to enjoy here. The album bounces between blues-rock, country-blues, and folk, but it doesn’t quite know what it wants to be. The album is thankfully only 43 minutes, so it’s not super long, but it starts to push itself to being long by the end.
I mainly like the bluesier cuts on the album, especially where White lets his guitar do the singing, so to speak, but that isn’t a whole lot. It’s mainly a country and folk album, but even so, White’s vocals and lyrics are a ton of fun, and his songwriting is solid. This isn’t my favorite out of his discography, but I still like this album. It has some good hooks, and the instrumentation is fun, but I like it when White goes fully blues, versus anything else. His guitar playing is quite good, and he’s one of the best modern blues-rock guitarists that are still making music. Nonetheless, I was happy finding a copy of Blunderbuss; it’s a good album, even if I haven’t been going back to it a whole lot. It’s one of those albums I like, but it hasn’t been something that’s been calling me, so to speak.
*cutely gives Wendy a loaded gun* here Wendy

Howdy
The Blunderbuss Fleece is complete! This one took several months to get right. I also took some creative liberties, mostly with the hat. But I think this might be my favorite fleece yet!
