omelas nationalists are all like love it or walk away from it

They've started bringing an emotional support dog to the Omelas pit twice a year and letting the kid pet it and sometimes they put a few cheese cubes into the kid's food bowl, so it's not even really suffering at this point.

i hear theyve started doing child acknowledgments before public events in omelas. yeah they’re still keeping the child in complete and total misery though

hate that people interpret omelas as a thought experiment and not as ursula k. le guin saying, "look here now; why must you have violence? why do you accept the city more with misery? how can so many gaze upon this child rotting—let this child rot—and not imagine a world better? is this what you want to be?"

I'm all for the freedom of speech but the Omelas anti-child-suffering activists got a little extreme and started breaking into the child torture cellar and getting the thing out as a form of political protest, so we've had to set up a decoy suffering child in a different child torture cellar to throw them off, and if the story ended there it'd be fine because it turns out that having two suffering children in two torture basements makes the city double utopian, with double the social safety nets and extra universal healthcare and like twice the amount of scientific advancement. But that also meant we needed a second decoy child, justified by the existence of the first, and since the second decoy child made the utopia three times perfecter they're adding a fifth and sixth child torture cellar now.
