Itās finally happened.
After almost a decade on this site, I found another Tumblr user in the wild. I stopped to tie my shoe with rainbow laces this morning outside the silversmith at Colonial Williamsburg, and I heard it.
āI like your shoelaces.ā
Oh. Oh no.
I responded the only way I could. āThanks.ā And then I reluctantly added, āI stole them from the presidentā¦and if that makes sense to you, Iām very sorry.ā
The poor man, in full Colonial dress, stared at me for a long moment. And then burst into laughter. And said, āI havenāt thought about that in YEARS and this has never happened to me before.ā
Yeah. Me neither. Not until today.
Tumblr rite of passage. Achievement unlocked.
@victoriansecret I found your friend!!!
Donāt usually go on Facebook because itās fucking stupid but this. Was too funny.
need to beam this tweet directly into everyone's minds right now
someday I hope someone finds me interesting enough to preserve me for scientific use
if you really liked me you'd prepare me with formalin and suspend me in a glass jar of isopropyl alcohol

When you thought it would be easy peasy lemon squeezy but it turns out to be difficult difficult lemon difficult.
Wait thatās actually really good, gonna pop this out of the tags
Not the citrus scale I was looking for but I like it
if i made a video game where you get to pick the gender of the player character i'd make both the options be nonbinary and you can either have they/them or it/its pronouns. those are your only options
and if i said nolan's odyssey starring no greek actors and with no recognizable aspects of greek culture or involvement by greeks, is the direct legacy of white supremacist colonialism that treated ancient greece as not just the pinnacle of ancient culture, but of an artificially created "european" culture, which white western europeans and their settler descendants, as the new pinnacle of culture, were the sole spiritual inheritors of.
^^^ PEOPLE ARE STILL THERE. There's a metro station across the street from the colosseum where i found a hair in my pizza slice. We drove by ruins of an amphitheater next to a motorway in greece once. It's literally just real places where real people live and have lived. It's not mythical perfect lands that once existed. I went to Itacha in 2023 and there was not enough parking space.

Slaveryā¦
"Slavery was so long ago. Get over it."
Slavery is literally happening now. Police never stopped being slave catchers. People are supporting it now just like they supported it then.
If you support ICE, you would have supported slavery, because ICE is slavery.
thinking about that post about a guy clearly dealing with delusions declaring how the government was making people transgender and then glancing at a trans person next to him and saying āwhich must be strange to hear as a native transsexualā because justā¦. the layers going on
a guy whos really self conscious about his persecutory delusions being seen as rude is so fascinating to me for some reason. additionally i wonder what, in his mind, distinguishes the Forcefemmed Masses and the ānative transsexual.ā furthermore, why did he log her in the latter category? was there some sort of distinguishing feature she had or did he just decide that on a whim? many questionsā¦

all these fucking fools on my dashboard talk about how they love bats but only show pictures of fruit bats fuck you start posting pictures of all bats i canāt stand this fucking bat erasure
look at him heās not your conventionally attractive bat but he deserves just as much love
Yo, you want some adorable non-fruit bats? Gotcha covered, pals!
Long Eared Bat, huge ears and an adorable face!
Mexican Free Tailed Bat, named for the fact that their uropatagium (back leg membrane) doesnāt cover their tail, leaving them with a teeny mouse-like tail.Ā
Gouldās Wattled Bat, they got some pearly white sharp teeth, but they tell great jokes and always laugh at yours too.Ā
āHAHAHAHAHA!ā
Hoary Bat, AKA the bat that looks like theyāre covered in powdered sugar.
Bulldog Bat, a bulldog⦠with wings <3Ā
Vampire Bat, often seen as creepy, but theyāre actually really cute. Also fun fact, vampire bats live in a social structure where able-bodied bats go out and feed and then share part of their meal with old/weak/sick members who cannot forage themselves. No survival of the fittest here, every bat helps every bat out <3Ā
And lastly, the Painted Bat, and yes, those are its actual colors. Canāt get any more Halloween than that <3Ā
Let me add a couple more!!
A personal favorite of mine: Honduran White Fruit Bat, also known asĀ āMarshmallow Batsā! These tiny cuties make tents by nibbling on the leaves until they fold down, and they snuggle close underneath it!
Bumblebee Bat! The smallest bat species and often considered the smallest mammal on Earth!
And the newly discovered Pied Bat!! I couldnāt find much about them, but gosh, they are adorable!!
@spacebatisluvd
I love them all.
getting lost in boston is fun because I turned around on a street corner three times and some guy yelled "hey stupid! the bus is that way!" very helpful interaction and accurate insult, 10/10 no notes
one time I walked around a building a couple times looking for a bathroom and this guy went "this bitch thinks she's on a merrygoround, where the fuck are you tryna go? bathroom? one floor down to the right behind the door that says bathroom."
My very first time in Boston. I was absolutely miserable, trying to drag my giant suitcase up a lengthy set of stairs in the pouring rain. This guy who had already reached the top looked back at me with the most pure expression of disgust Iāve ever seen in anyoneās eyes, marched back down the stairs, grabbed my suitcase, carried it to the top, left it there for me, and walked away without ever saying a word. I think about him often.
For the people in the notes going "why is Boston like this": a) the insults are a way to show you have no ulterior motives when helping someone (and don't need to be thanked or repaid), and b) Boston was settled by the Irish
also the Italians. mixing Irish and Italian sociocultural attitudes had the effect of multiplying the Sass Levels by the power of infinity, in the sense that you get all of the clever dry wit of the Irish and all of the bitchy gossipy condensation of the Italians rolled into one very stereotypically overly-friendly American package.
also worth noting that who you are to them doesnāt matter. theyāll talk to strangers like that and will also talk to their best friends like that. theyāre just Like That.
More from the notes:
researching the history of education in japan and learning that, preāMeiji Restoration, peasants/commoners formed their own schools to become educated because it was the best way of fighting tax fraud.
That is, when an official told you, a rice farmer, that you owed more taxes than you really did, it was very useful if you were good enough at math to know he was lying (and could prove it) and if you were good enough at writing to write a letter to your government defending your case.
all of which is to say it's crazy that mega-corporations are now pushing education to be "what if you paid us whatever we tell you to for the rest of your life and never do math or write anything ever again"
Adding to this because I am unexpectedly finding it useful for asking questions about AI.
Education in Japan didn't become widespread, with nationwide standardized exams, until after the Meiji Restoration. Japan of course wasnt a democracy; it was blooming into a fascist nightmare. So why was this the time when education became available to all people, the rich and poor, boys and girls alike?
Education as a universal human right was not a motivation for the Japanese government.
Instead it was motivated by the desire to cultivate äŗŗę, jinzai, human resources/talented people. Jinzai could help the empire expand. Even today, the Japanese government explicitly uses the term jinzai prominently in its Ministry of Education documents.
So if, today, we're heading into an era that looks increasingly fascist, the government could still be motivated to educate its people in order to remain competitive.
But let's say that 50 or 100 years from now, AI is doing for us what the jinzai of the past used to do: the coding, the engineering, the diagnosing, the war commanding, etc., etc.
Let's say we actually only need a few flesh-and-blood jinzai to oversee what AI is doing. Those people would need to be incredibly intelligent and skilled, but if the need and desire for everyone to be educated has dissipated, then who are the select few who will have the opportunity to become educated? Will we fall back into a society where only the wealthy can school their children?
Just things I'm thinking about as I eat my soup tonight.
the thing about media literacy is that understanding why the author chose to specify that the curtains are blue is the same skill set as understanding that the way the author characterizes all black characters as angry or all chinese characters as meek and silent is racist. it is the same skill set as being able to identify when a news source is biased or when someone is feeding you propaganda. the ability to ask "why did this person choose to present this premise in this specific way?" is a critical skill in a world full of misinformation. why are the curtains blue? maybe it's a characterization detail. maybe it's extraneous worldbuilding. why is this character written as being right all the time? maybe you're intended to disagree with them. maybe it doesn't matter. maybe you should still ask why.
Also if someone makes a point to ya know, point out the curtains are blue⦠it might be for a reason. In a stupid book youāre forced to read as a teen it may be to show how the character is calm or attempting to be calm cause blue is a calming color.
In a news article the headline pointing out a ādark skinned man arrestedā is it relevant why the man is dark skinned? Why does it matter? Itās not like theyāre still looking for the guy and need you to be aware what he looks like⦠why point out heās dark skinned??? Because they want you to use stereotypes to assume heās dangerous⦠so when you read on or see footage of the arrest and see how the man is treated by the police.. youāre primed to think he deserved it because dark skinned men have historically in this country (USA) been said to be more aggressive and dangerous. THATS why literacy is important. THATS why you need to practice this skill.
And the problem is you never know exactly where this issue comes up so you canāt even say āwell just use those kinds of examples to teach us!ā Because then youāre teaching āto the testā rather than teaching the actual mechanics of how to understand media literacy.
So yes, it IS important to learn why the author chose to make the curtains blue and why it matters.
