Would I recommend the novel to a random 12 year old I don't know? Probably not! But I first read Wicked at 12, and it's not like it permanently scarred me. It's not like I couldn't follow the plot. I didn't understand all the sociopolitical and religious commentary at 12, but that's why I went on to re-read it multiple times throughout my life. I get more from it each time.

There's sex and violence, yes, but I knew what sex was at 12, and I was seeing violence and war on the news every day. Why's the fictional sex and violence worse? Why should a kid not challenge themself with a book outside their comfort zone? Every kid deserves the chance to wig themselves out with a weird book they don't fully understand yet, and Wicked was mine.

My wife is very fond of a Mitch Hedberg quote I think is relevant here: "Every book is a children's book, if the kid can read."

My parents had a policy about what books I was allowed to read, and that policy was, "You can read any book you want in the entire world, and if you ever have questions about what you read, come talk to us. If you read books with sex, just remember they're stories that were written for fun instead of education, and real sex might not actually be like that when you're old enough to decide to have it."

As a teenager, I read everything I could get my hands on that looked vaguely adjacent to my interests. Sometimes those books were very adult, and sometimes I put them down because they were too weird or confusing for me at the time. At no point was I in danger, or being preyed on, or being treated inappropriately by real adults.

I'm guessing he had a thorough medical beforehand, including his cardiac health, because vasoconstriction caused by sudden immersion in freezing water can cause a heart attack.

Not just useful into for safety but, as @marlynnofmanyofmany points out, also useful for writers, who find any and all information potentially useful. :->
