If anyone would like to read a thorough take down of Sparta as a state not worth emulating, then ive got just the series of articles for you!
Reblogging because pissing on Sparta is one of my hobbies. And yes, totally check out the link above. Brett has a lot of great discussion and scholarship on why Sparta was proto-fascist garbage, and he presents it with both snark and accessibility.
Holy shit. That’s… that’s worse than I thought it would be. Yikes.
Reblogging because more people should read the ACOUP Sparta takedown and fewer people should get their concept of history from fucking 300.
No one should get their concept of history from 300, and I say that as someone who enjoyed 300. 300 is a comicbookification of a legend, and legends are already exaggerations.
A Great Divorce has also done an audio version of the ACOUP Spart takedown if audio is easier for you!
Can everyone who makes video content do a Deaf bitch a favor? Watch your shit with the captions on and the sound off, and then do another round of editing to fix things including but not limited to:
Captions cover the spot on the screen you put the information I need
The dialogue is captioned but not the song you have playing that the dialogue is responding to
You only captioned the person on the screen, not the person off screen who is also talking
No captioning of critical sound effects (alarms, bells, dogs barking, etc)
Speakers are not labelled at moments where it is not clear on the screen who is talking.
Captions cover the spot on the screen that you put the information I need!
Other d/Deaf people welcome to add.
This post brought to you by the fifth video tutorial I could not follow because the bad, auto-generated captions covered what I was trying to watch today.

being a 60s Dr Who fan is so hard. like hello I'm writing a fanfiction to explore this character's trauma. Yeah his trauma from when he was imprisoned on Mechanus. From when he was imprisoned on Mechanus by the Mechanoids. Stop laughing at him.

I mean, the old jewish cemetery in Prague is extremely recognizable, I just worked out where it was within the cemetery, give or take about a meter.
we need another bidoof’s law to refer to the phenomenon where someone says some rude stupid shit in the reblogs of your post and you go to their blog and all their posts are about nature loving you and being kind to each other and cute illustrations about friendship etc. the cognitive dissonance
Fleming's law: the most toxic person you've ever met over-relates to woodland creatures on social media
Remember when Lil Nas X beautifully explored his sexuality, seduced and killed the devil to the banger of all time, and instead of cheering on this openly gay and proud Black artist for his artistry and fighting back against respectability politics, suddenly said respectability politics was all the Queerest Place on the Internet cared about? Hm. Wonder what happened there.
Anyway I miss him and hope he's doing better with his mental health 🙏🏾
Like say what you want about "bad queer representation", but this was the song that made me openly and happily accept that I was bisexual. To see him up there Black and beautiful, making music that I love, absolutely killing it? Yeah. You couldn't tell me shit. This man made me proud to be out. "This will make them think we're evil for being gay" hey newsflash dawg-

gotta pick some stuff up at tractor supply so taking the girl with us. i think she may enjoy the outing. if she doesn't I'll just go back and wait in the car with her :)
she did so good y'all. she was hesitant to get out of the car again so we gave her a lot of time and space and backed off whenever she said no ("can I help lift you out? no? ok!") and eventually I just said to ship "you ahead in and get the chews. I'll stay here with her and if she decides to get out we'll meet you inside, and if not I'll just wait in the car with her" and she decided after ship left that she did in fact want to accompany us. she was pretty cowed and needed a lot of time to stand and look around and sniff the air. like a LOT. so I gave her all the time she needed and only moved forward with her when she was ready. i brought my over the shoulder leash so I could have the security of knowing she was attached to me if she was startled and bolted, and I could keep a really loose hand with the leash so she wasn't feeling any leash pressure. sometimes I would check in with her and ask her if she felt like having a cheese cracker about everything. she said "yes please" mostly but sometimes she would say "not right now I'm really busy sniffing and processing everything"
she was definitely a bit overstimulated in the store. she saw a dog and I asked her if she wanted cookies for seeing the dog and she said yes please. she saw a cat and I asked her if she wanted cookies for seeing the cat and she said yes please. by the time Ship was ready to check out she was pretty done so I just walked out with her while they checked out and she made a beeline for the car and jumped RIGHT in. I told her I was really proud of her for trying and that she had done a really great job :) we gave her a pork chomp to have on the ride back!
REALLY funny the difference between how people treat you walking a cute little dog around TSC vs when you're walking a big dark brindle pit bull. scary dog privilege real
I hate how it's always "stop letting your teenagers drink energy drinks!!!" And never "stop letting energy drink companies put dangerous amounts of caffeine into their drinks and stop letting them market to teenagers" or "stop forcing teenagers to be at constant sleep deficits because of early wake ups and absurd homework and stress loads" but hey who cares why not blame the literal child for trying to stay awake enough to match the absurd expectations y'all have for us now
Video from my groomer’s tiktok of Hercules being just the best boy. He did a blep AND made biscuits while being shaved. 🥰
It’s almost time for Hercules to get his summer look again. I hope you’re all looking forward to naked boy.
A fact about me is that I don't like childhood friends to lovers, specially if it's straight, I think it's boring and, more often than not, annoying.
But then - there's Steven and Connie.
They are the definition of the trope, but they are so well presented.
They were never "just friends", they were kids and, therefore, didn't understand the feelings they had, but they always had them. Steven just presumes he would be "first boy" when Connie becomes president, and Connie just assumes she will be his knight forever in order to protect him.
There's no second guessing, they are friends, but they are romantically inclined since day one, childhood crush growing up with them.
He proposes to her, and they are not even "dating" when he does that, and she just says "yes, but not now". It's a mutual understanding.
And when they kiss in the last episode, it's not a big moment, it's natural, we knew it was bound to happen, and they knew, it's in passing, no need to explain anything, it's there and it has always been there.
They never start dating because they never didn't date, it's a natural progression, they're relationship grows with them.
No friendship is ruined, because it's the base of everything, no miscommunication, because they always knew what it would lead to without even knowing.
Nothing can ever beat that, childhood friends to lovers can go home, shows over, pack your bags.

Story time:
In middle school biology, we did an experiment. We were given yams, which we would sprout in cups of water. We then had to make hypotheses about how the yams would grow, based on descriptions of yam plants in our books, and make notes of our observations as they grew.
Here’s what was supposed to happen: we were supposed to see that the actual growth of the plant did not resemble our hypotheses. We were then supposed to figure out that these were, in fact, sweet potatoes.
What actually happened was that every single student in every single class lied in their notes so that their observations perfectly matched their hypotheses. See, everyone assumed the mismatch meant they had done something wrong in the process of growing the plant or that they had misunderstood the dichotomous key or the plant identification terminology. And, thanks to the wonders of a public school education, everyone assumed the wrong results would get us a failing grade. We were trying to pass. We didn’t want to get bitched out by the teacher. Curiosity, learning, science - that had nothing to do with why we were sitting in that classroom. So we all lied.
The teacher was furious. She tried to fail every student, but the administration stepped in and told her she wasn’t allowed to because a 100% fail rate is recognized as a failure of the teacher, not the class. It wasn’t even her fault, really, though her being a notorious hard-ass didn’t help. It was a failure of the entire educational system.
So whenever I see crap like Elizabeth Holmes’s blood test scam or pharmaceutical trials which are unable to be replicated or industry-funded research that reaches wildly unscientific conclusions, I just remember those fucking sweet potatoes. I remember that curiosity dies when people are just trying to give their superiors the “right” answers, so they can get the grade, get the job, get the paycheck. It’s not about truth when it’s about paying rent. There’s no scientific integrity if you can’t control for human desperation.
Just Grow Up
There's a paradox in a lot of plural spaces. System kids are welcome, but only if they're Literal Children who stay in child-only soft boxes where they can be ignored. If a kid wants to have an adult conversation, then they're spoken over, pushed away, or otherwise discounted more often than not- and if they're accepted, then it's often at the cost of expecting them to have absolutely no childlike qualities to "prove" that they're mature enough to stay around. We even see this pattern within systems sometimes.
What are systems without adult members supposed to do if the only place system kids can talk is in the Super Soft Safe Box? What about system kids who want to talk about theoretical physics or drugs or sex or a thousand other taboos? What about kids who function as adults? And what about system kids who are kids but don't want to live their lives in the Super Soft Safe Box like the world expects them to?
Acceptance of system kids as being wildly different from each other in mindset and ability is improving, but we still have a long way to go in treating system kids with a shred of respect and decency in wider plural spaces.
Not to mention... why is there so much intense focus on mental age as some universal concept in the first place? It feels like a lot of the plural community takes the concept of mental age as a given without considering where that idea comes from, how it affects how they treat others, and how it interacts with systemic discrimination and ableism. It can sometimes be a useful construct if approached critically, but I see so little critical thought about it.
If you want some reading on the topic, one of the articles cited is worth at least a skim- it's a fairly good surface overview of eugenics and its tie to IQ/mental age, immigration, racism, ableism, etc.
ID below the cut with the full quotes- sorry to alt texters, I fit as much as I could in there but the text limit is real.
