even at their angriest, all they can think about is each other.

obi-wan loves anakin so much that he watched over his child for him and protected him. and anakin, as vader, had his love so twisted that it turned into a deep, unhealthy obsession, easily interpreted as hatred. even vader interpreted it as hatred.

it’s such an intense bond that it’s wild to even try to comprehend or think about. we all know and acknowledge how deep anakin loves, to the point that it’s harmful. but obi-wan also loves anakin to such an intense degree, even if he’s better at not. you know. actually losing his mind.

and i think the biggest tragedy of this whole thing is that they never know how to tell each other this. so they just go their whole lives, knowing but not knowing.

generation swap au!! basically obi wan and ahsoka swap places in the lineage and now Shenanigans Are Afoot. everyone keeps the same age gaps so ahsoka and anakin are 5 years apart and obi wan and anakin are 16 years apart

qui gon survives naboo because i say so, and is technically anakin’s master but as his injury rendered him permanently temple-bound, ahsoka takes up mentorship/a supervisory role for anakin on missions

years down the line when anakin is a senior padawan he meets initiate obi wan after he gets landed creche duty after a typical tano-skywalker mission forces him into medical leave. initiate obi wan takes one look at anakin and instantly decides to be his friend.

what that ends up meaning is that obi wan keeps trying to toddle along on missions with them because he “just wants to make sure they all get back okay” and they (qui gon and ahsoka) have to keep gently shepherding him back to the creche. 

anakin is like “i blew up the trade federation at age 9 why can’t he come along???”

The original tweet summarizes it pretty well. Fanfic tends to be popular among certain types of neurodivergent people (aka people most likely to read excessively as a child, and have burnout as an adult) for the same reasons that we tend to hyperfixate–neurochemical signaling (I hope I’m using that phrase correctly). What I mean is, for people who are really dependent on changes in dopamine/serotonin/neurotransmitter levels, who have low levels or wonky neural reward systems (perhaps the most common types of neurodivergence)…people like us rely on dependable external sources of those neurochemicals. In order to function, we spend a lot of our free time trying to level out our brain chemistry using things that can reliably bring us a steady stream of joyful moments (rewards) without costing too much of the mental effort that is already in short supply. 

significantly: the investment of reading has to be balanced with a steady “return on investment”–and this return has to start fairly quickly. because again, we don’t have a lot of attention/energy to invest on tiring things. we have perpetual “low batteries” in that regard.

that doesn’t mean these stories are “simple,” or that they lack complexity or value–only that the reward has to come in short regular intervals, and it has to have a low “upfront cost.” which is why fanfic stories are so perfectly formulated for neurodivergent readers–they are often beautifully written, but skip a lot of the upfront costs (of introducing new characters, of world-building, of getting the audience emotionally connected to the story elements).

the nature of fanfiction is that the reader has a pre-existing relationship with this world and these characters. that–combined with the shorter average length of fics–means that fan fics very quickly start “rewarding” the reader in a way that traditional fiction struggles to. that’s not a bad thing! and maybe it’s something more traditionally published writers should be paying attention to.

The part I read was this of this old hunchback guy in a cloak walking towards clone troopers (this is after the troopers start killing jedi) with a baby in his arms. He starts telling the troopers that it’s a jedi baby and the troopers are like “uuuhhh okay crazy old man with a really ugly deformed baby alert back away” but the old guy keeps insisting that the baby is a jedi so the troopers are like “how do you know? it could just be any random baby” and then the baby says “you can tell by my lightsaber” and kills the troopers. The baby was actually Yoda and the hunchback was Obi Wan.

 All I can imagine now was the conversation that led up to this very dramatic and hilarious ruse, and how exactly they came up with it. I kind of feel like it was the Star Wars equivalent of “Get Help” from Thor: Ragnarok???? Like???

Obi Wan: Hey Yoda, we should do “Jedi Baby.”

Yoda: Doing that, we are not.

Obi Wan: Oh come on, you love it!

Yoda: No.

Obi Wan: It’s great! It works every time!

Yoda: Humiliating, it is.

Obi Wan: Do you have a better plan?

Yoda: No.

Obi Wan: Excellent. We are doing it then.
