I genuinely think more people getting into stories that are completely finished, or old enough that they're unlikely to be continued, would be great for the state of shipping and fandoms as a whole. Then, at least, there wouldn't be so much of a focus on whether or not certain ships 'deserve' to be canon, or arguing over what 'will' be canon. The story's finished. Just have fun. Ship regardless of canon status. Not everything must or will be confirmed.
