in light of my previous post about how much i adore captain hastings, have a couple of fic recs that i feel really do justice to his character :)
(Note: these are all book and/or ITV Poirot canon)
The Solemn-Eyed by Quasar (T, Gen fic): A really fantastic English folklore-inflected case fic. Reminds me a bit of Hilary Mantel's work: its got some wonderful character moments, but its the interweaving of the fantastic and the real that really stands out to me.
What Happens At Eton by tbbto (G, Gen fic): A short snippet that demonstrates one of Hastings' strengths.
couldn't utter my love by TheGoodDoctor (T, Hastings/Poirot): A very sweet story set in a quiet moment in the midst of a case. Again, really nicely demonstrates some of Hastings' talents, in this case being the more emotional side of people
Novembre by TheGoodDoctor (T, Hastings/Poirot): A strong contender for my favourite Poirot fic Ever I think. An incredibly well-written reckoning with the consequences of war on Hastings, and to a lesser degree Poirot, with a fantastic array of supporting characters and a really lovely romance plot. Also, the Poirot voice is immaculate.
Elegy for Those Still Breathing by oneinspats (G, Hastings/Poirot): Another fic that, though incomplete, really engages with the aftermath of WW1 and its effects on the main cast of characters, and is generally very well written, with a lovely sense of rhythm to the prose.
