Personally, I think Doctor Who should have gone on hiatus after An Unearthly Child. There were clearly some kinks in the format and pacing that needed working out, and honestly, a break would have given them time to really figure things out before continuing with the show.

I think it's really funny that my entire reaction to the whole RTD-leaving no-special thing is "okay whatever" and "thank fuck," considering I have been a lifelong DW fan. Mostly because there is so much more to DW than just the TV show at this point, and the very concept of whatever that special was going to be gave me far too much anxiety to even want to watch it...but yeah.
Anyway that being said, to anyone feeling down, I cannot recommend getting into the audios, books, comics, etc enough. Genuinely. Thousands of stories that are literally Right There, and many of them will absolutely rewrite your brain chemistry. You could read/listen to one new story every day and still not be through it all for years. A lot of these storylines are literally so good that they made me stop caring what happens on the TV show.

i have to say tho i DO think people will be a lot kinder to RTD2 in retrospect. right now it has Reality War and also u know the possible cancellation hanging over it but like for most of it the response was pretty positive? it just ended very badly.

I don't think dr who is getting cancelled but you have to admit generating hype for an announcement only to say "we're pulling the plug" would be kind of hilarious

Edited to add: Since a lot of people are reblogging this original post, I'm adding the updated version I did that incorporates the intersex circle...
I know intersex people are still getting excluded in a lot of LGBTQIA+ spaces (let alone wider society) and I think it's crucial to show this group is included in the statement that we all deserve equal rights.
If you're a TV only Doctor Who fan sad about the recent news of the special being cancelled and want to dip your toe into the wealth of other Doctor Who media out there, here are some pointers that might help <3
Classic Who (pick a Doctor and just start, it's paced differently but trust me it's so good!) - All on Internet Archive (as of posting this)
The Big Finish Audios - Potential Starting Points: - Eighth Doctor - helpful resource with starting points and listen orders - Thirteenth or Ninth Doctor Adventures - still currently releasing bi-monthly so you can hop in with your fav NuWho Doctor! (they've also announced a Tenth Doctor series upcoming) - Classic Doctors, New Monsters - these boxsets are so much fun and were where I started with Big Finish so if you're unsure of the audio format, this is where I started - Sixth Doctor Main Range - starts with The Marian Conspiracy
The Novels - so many ranges to choose from, get stuck in there! - Generally split into Virgin New Adventures (VNA) featuring the Seventh Doctor after the end of classic, Virgin Missing Adventures (VMA) / Past Doctor Adventures (PDA) featuring other Classic Doctors, Eighth Doctor Adventures (EDA), and the New Series Adventures featuring nuwho doctors - Pick a Doctor or Companion you want to hear more from and maybe consult Tardis Guide.
The Comics - again, pick a doctor and eat good
