@kingdonmicrofic day 27: opalite | 266/266 | rating: e (sexual content, cumplay)
“Holy shit.”
“Yeah,” Mel breathes in response.
It takes a second for the world to stop spinning and for Frank to really focus and look down at Mel, who is now sitting back on her haunches, opalite beads of his own pleasure dotting across her perfect tits. In the moment, he blacked out and he’s grateful that he managed to only hit her chest and not her hair or her face or oh my god.
Some buried, caveman part of his brain lights up seeing the aftermath of their experiment, him all over her, deriving a sick pleasure from claiming her or something, while the other part of his brain starts spiraling about why he’s thinking that in the first place.
“It doesn’t feel as weird as I thought it would,” she pokes at a glob below her shoulder, smearing his cum around her bare skin, delightfully unaware of his inner turmoil. “Like I thought I’d dislike the texture of it more, but it’s sort of nice.”
After a second of pinching the iridescent liquid between her fingers, she beams up at him, “Was it good for you?”
“Was it—” Frank chokes. “Yeah baby, fuck, I just— I feel like an asshole right now?”
Mel frowns. “Why?”
“I feel bad that I like it. Like I’m being a guy about it. In a bad way”
“Well, that’s silly,” she tilts her head. “I asked for it. You delivered.” Frank watches her swipe another bead off her chest, bringing her finger to her mouth and licking and his brain shortcircuits. “I think you’re thinking too much.”

It really was unfortunate timing. Samira had just convinced Mel that she needed to confess or else Frank might find someone else. She finally got up the courage and then the new med students started. This would not be a problem whatsoever except there was a med student who had taken a certain liking to Frank, following him around like a lost puppy looking for love.
At first, Mel hadn't noticed, too occupied with the anxiety surrounding her confession. She'd also been somewhat avoiding him because she was about to do the very thing she feared could ruin their friendship. And while she was distracted, someone slid into her spot by Frank's side. Med student Charlotte Pine was not a blip on Mel's radar until she became all too impossible to ignore.
Everywhere Mel looked, Charlotte was there, trailing after Frank. When Mel hopped on a case with him, he let Charlotte come along and gave her instruction in that steady teacher's voice of his, the one he used to use with her. She had no alone time with him anymore, thanks to his shadow.
She tried really hard not to have a problem with Charlotte and even invited her to join cases she thought the med student would benefit from. But Charlotte didn't seem to care for Mel's brand of teaching and would zip off to find Frank as soon as she could without being too blatantly rude. Everyone in the ED could see Mel was getting sick of it. She and Frank were off for the first time in a year.
"Has anyone noticed Mel's been kind of… snappy lately?" Dennis asked lowly while charting.
Everyone murmured their agreements.
"I hate to say it but there's only one common denominator in Mel's change of personality and it's the fact that she and Langdon aren't really talking," Donnie supplied.
"It's because Pine is following him around and hogging all his time." Princess shrugged.
"Totally stole Mel's whimsy," piped Victoria.
Trinity ran her hands down her face. "I can't deal with a cynical Mel so someone needs to do something."
Everyone turned towards Samira, who had been blissfully silent throughout the entire exchange. She was taken aback by the attention, asking, "What am I supposed to do?"
Princess rolled her eyes. "Tell Mel to confess to Langdon."
"I already did! She was going to and then Pine got here!"
"Just give her another hard nudge. Save us, Samira," Trinity begged before walking away.
Samira sighed but took the burden on because she didn't like seeing Mel suffer. Plus Trinity was right and the efficiency of the ED would drop without Mel and Frank's partnership—partly because they worked so well together and partly because they worked better individually when they spent their small amounts of downtime chatting with the other.
The next time she saw her, she pulled Mel aside gently. "Mel… we need to talk."

Since Frank quit the bad drugs (benzos) and starting the good ones (Adderall) he finds he’s sleeping better, which is a little unfortunate, because the now-missing four to five free hours a day were when he would do all of his hobbies.
“Really, it’s better for you,” Yolanda is telling him. A rare slow day at work and somebody brought in bagels; as usual, when there’s food, Yolanda has crept out of the surgeon’s tower. She and Frank are huddled away in a corner, ostensibly to avoid Trinity, as she and Yolanda are currently off after a two-month period of on. “Nobody needs that many hobbies.”
“Actually, there’s a model—”
“Ugh, spare me.” Yolanda waves her half-eaten everything bagel. “Go talk to Javadi if you want psychobabble.”
“That’s offensive,” Frank says neutrally.  “Anyway, sure, maybe I don’t need to be taking runs around the neighborhood at three in the morning anymore, And I wasn’t really getting anywhere with the LEGO Star Wars sets, either, but I had to let my campaign go!”
“Your campaign?” Yolanda questions. “Were you moonlighting for the military?”
“Dungeons and Dragons,” Frank supplies.
“Dungeons and Dragons?” A familiar throaty voice, one that tugs a smile on the corner of Frank’s lips, which then causes Yolanda to turn her head so they can’t see her roll her eyes, comes from behind Frank. Frank turns to see Mel approaching them. She has a bagel of her own, and a dab of cream cheese on the corner of her lip, which Frank wets his thumb so he can swipe it away as soon as she’s within distance. He would like to blame it on being a dad more than being heads-over-heels, and he will, later, when Yolanda bugs him about it. For now, he accepts that he finds Mel arousing and adorable in equal, frustrating measures.
“Dungeons and Dragons,” Frank says. “You play?”
“Ah—no.” Mel’s cheeks, which had started turning pink, turn over to redness. “I’ve always wanted too, though. You said you had a campaign?”
“I used to DM a campaign,” Frank explains. “Over Zoom, with some guys from college. I had to let it go. We’ve been talking about starting one, though.”
“That’s so cool,” Mel says genuinely.
Yolanda rejoins the conversation: “You are the first person in the history of ever to say that.”
“You should join us,” Frank tells Mel. “I’ll teach you how to play.”
If they were looking at her, they would both see Yolanda rolling her eyes, but they’re not looking at her. They’re looking at each other, as happy as if Frank had just proposed marriage.

@kingdonmicrofic day twenty-six: whimsy bang | 500/437 | rating: t | warnings: implied infidelity
She wakes up to sound of banging on her door.
Disoriented, she reaches and grabs her glasses and phone off her nightstand. When she goes to check the time, her phone doesn’t light up. She frowns, and then notices the streetlight outside isn’t lit. A peal of thunder shakes the building. The storms must’ve knocked the power out.
The banging sounds again.
She gets out of bed and creeps into the kitchen, picking up her Apple Watch. The battery is still, miraculously, at 14%. She squints down at the tiny screen – it’s 3:13 AM. Who the hell is knocking on her door at 3:13 AM?
Then, she sees all the notifications on her watch. Twelve messages from Frank.
“Shit,” she mutters, dropping her watch onto the counter.
She jogs across the room, flings the front door open. He’s standing there, in a zip-up hoodie and joggers, soaked from the November rain.
“Frank,” she breathes, ushering him inside.
“Sorry,” he whispers, “I shouldn’t have come. I shouldn’t have woken you up, but…”
He trails off, but she doesn’t push him. She knows he’ll tell her when he’s ready.
Instead, she takes his hand and leads him further into her apartment.
“Come on. You must be freezing.”
She grabs a lighter out a drawer in the kitchen, and then they walk down the hall and to her bedroom. She lights the rosewater candle she keeps on her dresser, casting a soft yellow glow inside the room.
Slowly, she helps him undress, unzipping the sweatshirt and peeling off the white t-shirt he has on underneath. He really is soaked, his skin clammy, fingertips pruney. She pushes his sweatpants and boxers down his legs next, helps him step out of them, and then gathers the wet garments and leaves the room, throwing them in the dryer in the hall.
When she comes back in with a towel from the bathroom, he has his arms wrapped around himself, shivering. He looks so small for someone who usually takes up so much space, is so full of life.
She runs the towel over his skin quickly. Afterwards, she leads him to the bed, and then strips her shirt off and joins him under the comforter.
She wraps her arms around him, places her head on his chest, hears the rapid rhythm of his heart. She slows her breathing, presses kisses to his collarbone until his heartbeat steadies.
“Abby knows,” he says, finally.
She stills against him.
“She kicked me out,” he continues. “She’s going to try for full custody of the kids.”
“Oh, Frank,” she murmurs.
He curls further around her, presses his mouth against the crown of her head
“Please never leave me, baby,” he begs quietly. “Please never leave.”
She shifts further up the bed, so that she can cradle him against her chest, now. She tangles her fingers in his hair as he tightens his hold on her, feeling his tears melt into her skin.
“I never will,” she promises. “I never will.”

“Hey, Mel!”
Mel blinks as she walks by to see Santos, Whitaker and Javadi huddled over at the central desk, clearly in the middle of a gossip session and beckoning her over. She knows that none of them really pay her much attention, so she’s wary of the smirk on Santos’s face and Javadi’s widened eyes, but she also wouldn’t mind actually befriending them, so she steps over to them. “What’s up?”
“Do you know what’s going on with Dr. Whimsy over there?” Santos asks, subtly pointing behind her, and Mel turns around to see Langdon talking to Emma.
Turning back, she shrugs. “I haven’t noticed anything different with him.”
Santos raises an eyebrow, while Whitaker lets out a surprised, “Really?”
“You two are so close, we thought you must know something,” Javadi says, and Mel ignores the warm rush going through her at the fact that other people have noticed their bond as Javadi continues, “He’s been so… happy lately. This morning, he was whistling!”
“And he keeps, like, actually smiling,” Whitaker adds, clearly uncomfortable, while Santos’s full body shudders as she hisses, “He was even nice to me. Genuinely complimented me during a trauma.”
All three of them look at Mel expectantly, and Mel wishes there’s something she could tell them, but there isn’t, so she shrugs again. “Sorry, can’t help you there.”
Santos sits back in her chair with a disappointed huff as she crosses her arms and glares at Langdon behind Mel. “Maybe it’s sex related. I bet he’s screwing one of the interns or nurses. He seems like the type to cheat on his wife. Asshole.”
Mel knows for a fact that he’s not screwing an intern or a nurse, but she can’t tell anyone this without inviting further interrogations, so instead, she just keeps quiet as Whitaker replies, “I heard him talking to Dana about a possible trial separation a while ago, so maybe not technically cheating. He did also tell Shen that they had a date tonight, though.”
“Wait, I’ve got it!” Javadi exclaims with a shit-eating grin on her face. “I saw him looking at baby rompers on his phone the other day. Maybe he and his wife are having another baby!”
Santos and Whitaker seem to be satisfied with this explanation, the three of them huddling close together again as they start whispering and giggling about how band-aid babies are the worst fucking idea ever.
It gives Mel the opportunity to quietly slip away to tend to her next patient, smiling at Langdon as she walks past him.
It’s not until much later that she tells him about her interaction with Santos, Whitaker and Javadi, hissing to him, “You need to be more careful.”
He replies by nipping at that one spot behind her ear and smirking as she moans in response, his fingers tracing her slightly protruding stomach, his wedding ring cold against her skin.
“What, I can’t be happy I’m going to be a father again?”

@kingdonmicrofic day 26: whimsy. 437/437. no content warnings.
When Frank Langdon returned from rehab, he knows that he came back different.
Addiction to benzodiazapines aside, he's returned to the emergency department with his tail between his legs as well as a rocket up his ass.
It was a strange contrast. He's aware he's quieter, he tries not to jump from one thing to the next, make sure his patients receive the attention they deserve; but at the same time he could feel the static around him, as if he were continuously running in place on a carpet, getting no where but building up something inside.
When he returns, his walls are up. Because even if he doesn't care to admit it, even if he gets along well with his co-workers, when no one had reached out to him in almost a year yet no one seemed to be surprised as to why he'd been gone, that static inside him had built up, and changed his heart's electrical system, changing him.
He kills off his whimsy.
Returning to the Pitt kills that part of him, yet revives what he'd yearned for the months that he'd had to stay away. The part of him he'd studied and trained and built his whole life around, helping people. Helping others, helped him.
Physician heal thyself.
He could no longer run around the ER with cases, guiding students around like a shepherd, annoying Collins and Dana, asking asking advice from the nurses, showing off pictures of his kids and his proudest father's day gift of a (slightly too expensive) friendship bracelet Tanner and Penny had "made" for him.
And it's not like he's the only one. Returning differently seemed to be a pattern. Dana was much more closed off, as much as she liked to pretend that nothing's changed, walking around with a syringe of Versed in her scrubs.
Collins was gone. Barely a few texts exchanged between them once he knew he was coming back. The one person he'd started his residency with, graduated. Starting her own life far away.
Then there was the Robby of it all, his former friend who now hated him, and had gone on some sort of suicidal sabbatical and the only person who actually knew if he was alive or dead was Abbot.
This different version of him, the new and improved one seemed like it could be a good fit to his now different workplace.
But, as days go by and he's settled in, it only takes Mel rounding a corner to find him, beaming towards him to STEMI with me, Dr. Langdon! and he's powerless not to run along after her.
