I remember thinking that she offered me help when she was probably as unsteady as I was feeling but all these "protectors" and self-imagined "heroes" just shuffled past.

Before more complex life forms could develop and move onto land, it was necessary to miniaturize the oceanic environment, to reproduce it on a small and mobile scale. Soft, moist eggs deposited on dry ground and exposed to air would die; life could not move beyond the water-hugging amphibian stage. In the course of evolution, the ocean—the protective and nourishing space, the amniotic fluids, even the lunar-tidal rhythm—was transferred into the individual female body. And the penis, a mechanical device for land reproduction, evolved.

The penis first appeared in the Age of Reptiles, about 200 million years ago. Our archetypal association of the snake with the phallus contains, no doubt, this genetic memory. This is a fundamental and recurring pattern in nature: Life is a female environment in which the male appears, often periodically, and by the female, to perform highly specialized tasks related to species reproduction and a more complex evolution.

.... Among mammals, even among humans, parthenogenesis is not technically impossible. Every female egg contains a polar body with a complete set of chromosomes; the polar body and the egg, if united, could form a daughter embryo. In fact, ovarian cysts are unfertilized eggs that have joined with their polar bodies, been implanted in the ovarian wall, and started to develop there.

This is not to say that males are an unnecessary sex. Parthenogenesis is a cloning process. Sexual reproduction, which enhances the variety and health of the gene pool, is necessary for the kind of complex evolution that has produced the human species. The point being made here is simply that, when it comes to the two sexes, one of us has been around a lot longer than the other.

8B4T adds: No compromise with men (regarding feminist goals). For example when fighting for abortion rights we shouldn't accept anything that doesn't give us total control over our own bodies. We shouldn't stop fighting for / building the ability to live and work separately is another. So always keep fighting.

Many of us don’t behave that way, you just hyperfocus on the ones that do and treat them as if they are the only bi women that exist. We are not a hivemind.

We are human beings with our own flaws and desires. We are under no obligation to live our lives according to someone else’s checklist in order to be treated with some basic respect.

In high school and the first part of college, i was very dysphoric and thought I was non-binary because I thought I “wasn’t like other girls” because I didn’t fit in with misogynistic stereotypes. I couldn’t escape libdem ideas and always felt claustrophobic. Classic. I also was severely depressed and had an eating disorder that landed my in the hospital and almost got me removed from university. I had no self confidence and felt disconnected from other women.

Then, right after college I landed a job on a wilderness trail crew with the US Forest Service. By some stroke of luck I ended up on a four-woman crew. They were some of the most amazing, strong and hard working women I’ve met.

We spent the days using crosscut saws to remove fallen logs from the trails (think old-timey logger two-person saws), chopped smaller logs with axes, moved huge boulders with our bodies, and hiked 10-12 miles a day carrying about 60 pounds of gear each. It was amazing. Over one summer we cleared about 300 miles of trail, just the four of us.

It was an awakening for me. While I’d done manual labor growing up, it was always in the presence of men. With men, they insinuated I wasn’t as strong, tried to do my work for me, or showed off, etc. With my crew of awesome ladies, the environment was so different. We were strong, yes, but we met difficult tasks with effective communication and creative use of our body mechanics, instead of “brute strength.” There was no derision, no judgement, no mind games that there would have been if men were present.

Throughout the summer I stopped thinking of myself as non-binary. I stopped feeling shame in being a woman, and began to feel connected with my body for the first time in years. I started believing in myself again.

How many young women look at COMPLETELY UNREALISTIC depictions of femininity in media and culture and feel totally disconnected??

For me it was the holistic birth movement, and being with other pregnant women- the theme is female solidarity over tremendously powerful physical achievements.
