Female Character: *Everybody is immediately drawn to her for no discernible reason*
Female Character: *Extremely powerful compared to all of the other characters within the story; thereâs no reason as to how she became so powerful*
Female Character: *For some reason is able to quickly pick up new skills in a period of time comparable to a genius; no explanation for this too.*
Female Character: Â *has virtually no weaknesses except sheâs clumsy teehee :)*
Person: Isnât this kind of a mary-sue?
Tumblr: why do misogynists like to invalidate strong female characters???????????
If weâre going to be fair here, the reason so many people get upset when a female character is called a Mary Sue is because that label is thrown around so haphazardly and so very often handed to characters who really donât deserve to be labeled as such. The controversy of the term comes from its overuse and misuse.
The term can be used correctly, but it is too often misused by people who see a capable strong female character and have a gut instinct to burn the witch and return to their male hero power fantasy.
To quote @ladyloveandjustice
âSo, thereâs this girl. Sheâs tragically orphaned and richer than anyone on the planet. Every guy she meets falls in love with her, but in between torrid romances she rejects them all because she dedicated to what is Pure and Good. She has genius level intellect, Olympic-athelete level athletic ability and incredible good looks. She is consumed by terrible angst, but this only makes guys want her more. She has no superhuman abilities, yet she is more competent than her superhuman friends and defeats superhumans with ease. She has unshakably loyal friends and allies, despite the fact she treats them pretty badly. They fear and respect her, and defer to her orders. Everyone is obsessed with her, even her enemies are attracted to her. She can plan ahead for anything and sheâs generally right with any conclusion she makes. People who defy her are inevitably wrong.
God, what a Mary Sue.
I just described Batman.â

The problem isnât that characters are unrealistic. Heroes often are unrealistic and itâs ok to criticize media.
However, female characters are criticized where male characters arenât.
Everything in OPâs post could apply to Luke Skywalker (and definitely applies to Anakin) but those characters wonât be criticized the way Rey has been (even though everything Rey does in The Force Awakens is believable). We are more willingly to believe in a male chosen one who can just do amazing things because heâs the hero.
Boys can have wishfulment stories but girls can only have realistic stories.
^^^^
So, thereâs this interesting thing where a certain degree of saturation in stories will train the audience to just accept stuff thatâd normally strike them as bizarre or unrealistic, and move on without questioning it. Itâs sort of like âwilling suspension of disbeliefâ, except that phrasing doesnât really encapsulate it precisely. Itâs more like⌠commonality breeds acceptance.
For example, a humble young boy who rises to prominence and becomes a hero is such a standard piece of storytelling, that virtually no one ever sits down to watch a movie and actually goes âwell, but, this is just a young farm lad - surely he canât do a single thing to help stop the Forces of Evil!â People in the movie might do that. But unless the audience is very, very young, or has somehow managed to avoid most books, movies, songs, comics, television shows, and oral traditions for the whole of their life, theyâre going to sit down and think âah yes, hereâs our guyâ.
Even though, in real life, it actually IS still pretty far-fetched for Ye Humble Village Lad to turn out to be the only thing standing between mankind and destruction.
The interesting thing, though, is that if you change enough elements of what is so common as to be thoughtlessly accepted, the image you present will no longer resemble the familiar narrative. Even if, below the surface, the other components are exactly the same.
This, along with the above-mentioned misogyny, is another contributing factor to the Mary Sue thing.
Because there are fewer female heroes who are just unabashed power fantasies, embodying unlikely rises to success or mastery of untold skills, if you take a very typical story that stars a dude and swap him out for a lady, the elements once rendered invisible by familiarity, are now noticeable again. The audience is jolted out of complacency, and begins to think more critically about what theyâre being asked to believe. (You can accomplish the same thing with other demographics, too, i.e. putting characters of colour in roles typically given to white actors, or having LGBT+ characters with the same abundance as straight ones, and so on and so forth.)
So even people who like to think of themselves as totally fair and unprejudiced can end up enforcing double-standards in entertainment. Because if you donât catch yourself, you will not even realize that you managed to sit through three Iron Man movies without ever questioning the premise of Tony Starkâs genius, but somehow Shuri in Black Panther just struck you as âunrealisticâ.Â
every time i have salmon it's like. bears are right. i would also stand in a stream for this.
They are also right about: honey, berries, napping all winter, and lack of pants. So really, bears are just living the best life possible.
Iceland is fucking bizarre my name change made the news
Like just @ me at this point I'm literally the only person in iceland (and very possibly the world) who has the first name Lauf
(Article title reads "Lauf and Birningur in group of new names in the name register")
No one lives here so now two of our biggest news outlets are vagueing about me lmao
Hmm you're right. Correction: two of our biggest media outlets are talking about me specifically because they are obsessed with me
This morning I showed up to work and my boss was like "congratulations :))" and I was kinda confused so asked her on what and she said "your name, I heard about it on the radio"
So far I have counted two online articles and apparently the radio is also talking about my name change so I'll keep you guys updated when I'm on national tv or something
With a little legwork we can make more people on Tumblr see this than the entire population of Iceland.

not sure why people donât automatically say âshapeshiftingâ when asked what they want their superpower to be. you could become anyone you want. even fictional characters. anyone. cosplay would always be spot-on. dysphoria wouldnât exist. perfection
rob a bank and disguise yourself as a stray pen lying on a shelf when the cops come
there are two kinds of people
The secret about self esteem
You donât actually have to love yourself to be happy, healthy, and stable. Here are some beliefs that you can work towards instead
- no one deserves bad treatment, including you - You deserve to be treated with self kindness & to meet you own physical and emotional needs - Physical appearance isnât the most important thing, and even if youâre unattractive you deserve to be able to live your life without shame - that no one is expected to be perfect at everything they try, and that itâs ok to enjoy things you arenât good at - Itâs more interesting and fun to focus your thoughts outward on the world and other people than to think about how much you like or dislike yourself - That everyone makes mistakes and does embarrassing things, and that an embarrassing event might feel really terrible but itâs not actually a threat - Itâs not worth obsessing over whether you are a good or bad person, bc those things donât really exist. (There are only good & bad actions; humans are way too complex & ever changing to fit into black & white labels) - Your thoughts and emotions are as valid & team as anyone elseâs
Basically, the goal with all of this is to accept that you can treat yourself with self compassion. It is going to be near impossible to be happy if you constantly tear yourself down, or if you donât respect needs, but itâs definitely possible to be happy feeling pretty meh about it.
I recommend focusing on things you believe are true for all people, then working back to yourself (for example, that everyone deserves to be treated kindly, that physical appearance isnât shameful, that everyone makes mistakes, etc). Make self kindness the goal. When you are being mean to yourself, remind yourself to be kinder. If you feel horrible about a mistake remember you are only human. And the rest of the time? Pour your energy into creating meaningful activities in your life. Make art, chase goals, call friends, read books, learn, create, engage. You will find the works is much bigger and brighter when you make room for something besides self criticism.
I suggest everyone to read this

hot take: hrt, gender therapy and trans surgeries should be free
if cis people donât have to pay to have a body that doesnât make them dysphoric, neither should trans people
So by that logic does that mean that I should get anti-depressants and all the other pills for my mental issues for free because the people who donât suffer from them donât have to pay to have them?
And does that mean that corrective lenses should also be free, because people with good vision donât need to pay to see clearly, and that devices to aid in mobility for people with limited mobility (from crutches to (practical) canes to wheelchairs to prosthetics) should also be free, because people who donât have limited mobility donât need to pay for them?
yes? why does everyone in the notes keep trying to come up with gotchas lmao everything to do with healthcare should be free
Then by that logic, healthy food and clean water should be free because without food and water we will die. Also, without water, hygiene will be minimal therefore increasing the chances of disease.
Yes. People should have access to a healthy happy life and the whole point of a society is to support eachother and work together. how brainwashed by capitalism are you to think food and water shouldnât be free in an ideal world.
this post is such a wild ride every time. âso by this logic, people should have free access to the things they need to live and survive?????????â like yes bitch, all of it !!!
why does every band from the 2000s have a guy that looks like this:

thinking that Russia and China want to physically invade the US is actually less tethered to reality than Qanon
This⌠Isnât correct. Biden proposed a $715b budget, an increase from $704b. Thatâs literally just inflation. Heâs keeping the budget flat. The $753b top line number includes foreign aid. Source.
Meanwhile, the budget includes the following:
A 41% increase in the Department of Education, most of which would find high poverty schools, the largest increase to Title I schools ever
23% boost to Health and Human Services including nearly $9b for the CDC
$69 billion for affordable housing, a 15% increase
$14b across agencies for every agency to address climate change in their purview
I canât find the numbers but a massive increase to the IRS budget so they can audit large tax evading corporations
This is a total 16% boost to domestic spending and barely a 1.5% boost to defense.
Source
Y'all misinformation and manipulation isnât just limited to the right. Iâm not saying this is a great budget and defense should be cut but like. This isnât a significant increase.
Please get your news from somewhere other than Twitter and Tumblr and please do your own research on things
Another article about how the proposal wants to bump things like environmental justice, clean energy, health equity, and more.Â
Also here.Â
âY'all misinformation and manipulation isnât just limited to the right.â
If you are someone who likes to watch a lot of cop shows, I want you to ask yourself a few questions.
Why do all TV cops, even the good ones, hate Internal Affairs? Isnât the job of Internal Affairs to root out the âbad copsâ? Isnât their job to make sure police follow the rules? Why is that presented as inherently evil or antagonistic?Â
Why do all TV cops, even the good ones, hate defense attorneys? Isnât the defense attorneyâs job to protect the rights of all citizens? Isnât it their job to make sure police follow the law? Isnât it their job to make sure everyone is treated fairly under the system? Why is that presented as inherently evil or antagonistic?Â
Why do all TV cops, even the good ones, get upset when citizens invoke their constitutional rights? Donât those rights exist to ensure all citizens are treated fairly? Donât they exist to ensure innocent people are not wrongfully incriminated? Why are citizens who invoke their rights presented as dishonest, untrustworthy, or antagonistic?Â
To be clear, Iâve watched Brooklyn 99 and enjoyed it. I was watching Elementary the other day. But even when I watch shows I like, I make a mental note every time a cop lies, breaks the law, subverts someoneâs basic rights, or just generally acts like an asshole to the people the are meant to serve and protect.Â
How often are they called out on their behavior? How often are they punished for it? How often is it reinforced as correct by the narrative?
When I tell people to be critical of the media they consume that is what I mean. Not simply calling it terrible and moving on, but actually engaging thoughtfully, asking questions, and forming conclusions about what that media is trying to say to you. Then decide whether you want to keep listening, or if it will be better for you in the long run to move on.
I always remember in the 90s show The Practice which was all about defence lawyers and they didnât always like who they had to defend and one time they got a case against a genuine violent multiple murder thrown out because the main evidence had been found without a warrant. They all debated telling the judge because they didnât want him to walk free but in the end Bobby did, and the killer went free and when they were all having a morality crisis he said âthis is what we do. Defence lawyers are there to ensure the police have followed the law and protocol because if they donât for a guilty person then they wonât for an innocent. If the police had got the warrant and followed protocol we couldnât have got that case thrown outâ and Iâve always remembered how great a point that was for the show to make, that even defence lawyers donât always like what they have to do but itâs necessary to ensure everyone does what theyâre supposed to, to keep the law in check. Shows donât often make a point of that.

imagine trying to learn english and hear this
the worst part is that this makes perfect sense to me
There is no one in earth stronger than people who learn English as a second language. I bow to you
In case this is confusing, hereâs some more explanation.
Yeah = yeah
No = No
No, Yeah = Yeah (the no dismisses uncertainty about the yeah)
Yeah, no = No (the yeah confirms the no)
Yeah- no, for sure = yeah (yeah is the answer, with âno, for sureâ as emphasis under the same rule as âno, yeahâ where the no dismisses uncertainty about the for sure. Generally this means the speaker actually agrees with the asker)
Yeah, yeah, yeah = no (because either the speaker is not listening/paying attention, does not believe the asker, or they are dismissing the asker, often because they have something else to say/suggest; additionally this one is usually used with familiarity, not strangers, and often accompanies annoyance of some sort)
Yeah- no, yeah = Yeah (same terms as âyeah- no, for sureâ but less enthusiastic or less in agreement with the asker, ie: willing to do it but may not want to do it where âitâ may be anything from agreeing with the asker to doing a task)
No- yeah, no = No (no is the answer, with âyeah, noâ as emphasis under the same rule as âyeah, noâ)
This just clears it all up.

If I donât reblog this one of these things is definitely going to happen to me
thinkin about my (openly gay) lit professor today saying, âone of my favorite historical anecdotes is the time that Oscar Wilde was in America, at the same time that Walt Whitman was active and writing poems about sticking his tongue down other menâs shirts, and Wilde went to Whitmanâs house exactly one time and spent several hours there, and ever since all these historians have been like âwhat could they have been doing???? itâs such a shame weâll never know...â and I just.... we know. the only question now is who was the top.â
Whitman. No person that writes 'Love is a sacrament best taken kneeling' is a top. (Looking at you Wilde)
