anyway jeff bezos could eradicate homelessness. he could literally give each homeless person 100k and it would only take less than .5% of his entire wealth. what the actual god giving fuck
Why do you think they deserve it
Well shelter is a basic need, and would at the very least allow them a place where they can get back on their feet. Food water and shelter are necessary for a healthy body and psychology. Thereās also the fact that theyāre people too, and a little help goes a long way in making a decent community. Thereās plenty of reasons
Yeah they need stuff, but why does every homeless person deserve 0.5% of someoneās income
You have five hundred apples, and just one day to eat them all.Ā
You pass by a small crowd of hungry children, and decide youād rather 455 apples go rotten than give them to some snotty brat who isnāt your problem.
It doesnāt matter how hard youāve worked for your 500 apples, or that you arenāt the parent of any of those kids. in the moment you decide to walk away, it doesnāt matter why theyāre hungry, or who owes who what.
You had the opportunity to help people, you had the ability to help people, you had the resources to help people. You had everything you needed to make a small, tiny little difference in someoneās life, and you decided not to.
What are you going to buy in your lifetime thatās worth more to you than your own humanity?

Reblogging for the very, very important lesson
Actually another thing LotR does really well is making it clear that absolutely anyone CAN be redeemed, they just CHOOSE not to be.
Gollum's the biggest example, of course--he's so repellant but also so pitiable and you SEE that he still has the road to goodness open, but he doesn't QUITE take it, but he COULD, and you WANT him to. But it's true of everyone here.
Grima is offered like five second chances at various points, but he keeps going back to Saruman because that's what he knows and it is, in a twisted way, easier even when it makes him miserable. Saruman is asked by Gandalf to return to them, and it's a genuine offer of reconciliation, and we feel the tragedy when he wavers and then rejects it. Denethor is also given a path back to the light by Gandalf, who tells him he can do his duty by leading his people and dying in battle against the Darkness--and, again, although he refuses, we can imagine him accepting and regaining his honor.
And to accentuate this, we see people who fall and ARE redeemed! Boromir falls to the Ring, and attacks Frodo--but he repents, rejects what he has done, and takes up the right task set before him even though it kills him. Theoden is corrupted by Grima, and spurns Gandalf and the rest--but then he listens to Gandalf, takes up his duties as ruler, and goes to lead his people even though he expects to die doing it.
We SEE, in LotR, that mercy and reconcilation are available to every character, even the most despicable. We also see that some people won't take it, even when freely offered, due to the obstacles that have built up in their souls--but that they COULD, even if it would be very difficult. And--most importantly, imo--we feel bad whenever a villain ISN'T redeemed. Not because they "deserve" it, but because it would have been good for them.
so i hauve covid rn and i must say, American cold medicine is the absolute bees knees. You go to a UK pharmacy and they tenderly press like eight (8) paracetamol into the palm of your hand... God FORBID you're sick in France, i had to scour every pharmacy in Paris for something that wasn't HOMEOPATHIC PASTILLES. meanwhile last night i took the last of my stash of Nyquil that expired in 2019 and it was like getting hit by a fucking baseball bat (affectionate). press X to timeskip. LOVE me a cheeky little medically induced coma. you can really feel that it's a precursor to meth. i know that everything is fucking awful over there my friedns and my heart goes out to every one of you but if you need one small bright light of national pride in this time of strife please know that i envy you your cold medicine every day
i once took an american antihistamine pill just a basic one for seasonal allergies and i had to immediately lay down and while doing so i vividly hallucinated that i was a steerage passenger on the titanic resigned to my death as my cabin filled up rapidly with water. then i blacked out and when i woke up again my allergies were gone for the entire season.

while we're emptying the nuclear queer discourse takes magazine:
if your "queer space" doesn't allow cishet men i don't trust you to be normal about and respectful towards (especially pre/early-transition) trans women. some trans women look like men. if you don't let people who look like men in at all, your space is exclusionary towards trans women, and if you don't let them in unless they tell you they're trans women you're forcing girls out of the closet to access safe spaces. stop that
(this also applies to queer spaces where they allow people who look like men but they're Weird About It the whole time you're in there if you do)
someone mentioned this also happening to late-transition trans men and iām gonna be honest i also think thatās bad and shouldnāt happen to them either but iām not sure itās really the same
if youāre a trans guy and youāre getting barred from queer spaces for looking like a man, youāre probably far enough along that not having that space (which you totally should still have, just ftr) is not going to actively influence your transition too much, but if youāre a trans girl who is on the fence about the whole thing and you donāt get that kind of support it might actively stop you from transitioning for a while longer or doing it at all
if youāre transmasc and you donāt pass, youāre just gonna get perceived as a queer woman of some kind. and like thatās bad and not true either but no one has ever been kicked out of a queer space for looking like a queer woman. i have seen girls who look like queer men get kicked out of spaces with my own two eyes
oh youre right there are two sides of this when this happens that both really suck one is very likely to result in recloseting queer ppl and the other simply keeps queer ppl from having any kind of community and this affects cis queer men too like this happens a ton to cis gay men who are trying to enter into queer communities but arent visibly queer or present as queer and will be turned away unless they out themselves
and then on the flip side hose kept from participating in community even if they are already fairly along in their queer journey trans men who pass being barred from community for their masculinity and the knowledge that that happens may keep people from fully expressing themselves authentically or even prevent them from transitioning in order to keep the community they already have
So there's a Community Maker's Space that's like a warehouse with a bunch of tools you can come in and use to do things like wood working, sewing, quilting, glass making, black smithing, 3D printing (basically anything you can make or build you can do it there) that also has classes and workshops If something is male dominated it can uncomfortable to be the only woman there and you've probably experienced sexism and sexual harassment while in those spaces, sometimes to the point no longer going to those spaces because you do not feel safe. If you're queer those male dominated space might equally be unsafe because you experience sexism, transphobia and homophobia. Because some crafting like woodworking or blacksmithing and mechanical stuff is more popular with cishet men including some who are sexist and homophobic it's understandable that people who aren't cishet men might not be comfortable in a space with cishet guys. The Community Maker's Space wants to encourage groups that might not feel safe to come. Of course they have policies about harassment and say the space is safe, but if you have a life time of experiencing harassment by cishet men you might feel comfortable going to a space where it seems like everyone there is a cishet man. So the space wants create a space that is safe for women and queer folks so they have nights for that group Which DO NOT EXCLUDE CISHET men. How?
It's called "Theys Gays Gals & Allies Crafting Night" Cishet men fall under the Allies category. Allies are good in queer spaces because it's good to have allies in the community and if you are ally you are a part of that community because those are your friends, family, people you care about. Allies should also be welcome because they might actually be queer but not know it yet and being in that space will help them figure it out. And most sexist, transphobic, homophobia cishet men, the cishet men that you don't feel safe around, will not show up to an event for queer people as an ally.
I'm hoping, begging, this fandom that when it speculates about ART voice options, to stop adding in little qualifiers about how awful it would be to have a femme voice because that's "hetero and gendered" - it is not! That's not how agenderness works!
They are both its! One of them is a spaceship! Femme doesn't negate agenderness! Femme doesn't turn them romantic or sexual! Femme doesn't gender them!
Stop talking about femme voices and actors like it will ruin the character and the story for it to be so. You don't need to voice that!
The graphic audio novels use a femme voice and it's GREAT so just accept ANY voice will imply gender and get over it >( also "but people will ship them" like people don't now?
I was going to put this in the tags but I need to articulate this properly. I'm about to get a little (very) ranty with it so: spitfire incoming
(DISCLAIMER: I do not think it's wrong or bad to speculate or want ART to have a masc VA, if that's simply what you prefer. If your only reason is "I'd just like it" then that's perfectly fine)
(DISCLAIMER 2: I am not implying that people that want ART to have a masc VA are at fault of any of these things I'm about to get into. I am directly and ONLY addressing the population described in the original post)
Non-binary people don't owe you androgyny. A very femme or a very masc non-binary person is still, very much non-binary. Gender presentation does not equal gender identity.
Seeing femme presentations of non-binary individuals as less genderless than masc presentation reinforces the idea that masculinity is the norm and baseline. Overtly masc presenting people are seen as more genderless than overtly femme people, and that is absolutely a double standard. You cannot contest femme presenting non-binary identities as "less non-binary" without implying that masculinity is inherently more "default"
Feminine OR masculine gender presentation/portrayal of ART does not make it any less non-binary/genderless.
I understand the worry about the perception of people that don't understand these nuances. I understand, and it is true, that even knowing that femme non-binary presentation is just as valid as masc presentation, people without these sensibilities are going to intuitively see masc Murderbot and femme ART as "straight coded".
HOWEVER, what kind of standard are we setting by letting that dictate the way we see the bots' real/canon gender identities? I think we should be moving forward in accepting all the ways that genderlessness can be expressed. Yes, even if people don't get it. Even if the general public misconstrues it. We will never progress if we stay afraid of what people who don't understand or are outright blind to the reality will think.
Hell, people keep he/him-ing Murderbot, the general public does it constantly. We in the niche fandom are not hearing it as much because we have purposefully created a space where that is not tolerated. But I bet that if you grab a random person from the mainstream and have them watch the show, they will still he/him Murderbot despite the show explicitly stating that it goes by it/its pronouns.
In fact, I was listening to a podcast interview about PD with Martha Wells and guess what? The interviewer, who seemed to be an avid fan of the books and had read every installment and is familiar with the series, he/him-ed Murderbot the entire time. In front of Martha herself!
So then what? We can't have Murderbot be portrayed as masculine because that's "gendered" and it makes people from the mainstream misgender it?
No! Absolutely not. The misgendering has been a problem this entire time and guess what? We persevere. We keep enforcing and encouraging the usage of the correct pronouns, despite of what the mainstream thinks. We have been doing it since the books came out, and we will keep doing it with the show, despite the attention it gets from people that simply don't want to learn.
So then, why have we, as a fandom, never had a problem with Murderbot being masc presenting?
So then, why would there be a problem with ART being portrayed as femme presenting? Do you see the double standard I'm showing here?
We cannot let the mainstream determine what are and aren't the bots' canon gender identities. If they want to be willfully ignorant, educate them. If they don't want to be educated, let them be and distance yourself.
We have dealt with this for years with Murderbot's masculinity, why can't we do the same with femininity?
BESIDES, EVEN THEN, it's voice we're talking about, just voice. ART does not have a canonical human-form body or presentation. It is a giant spaceship. How much more genderless do you want to get?
So, if Murderbot being masc in a traditionally human-form way doesn't negate its genderlessness, why would ART's sheer voice negate its otherwise genderless physical appearance?
People have, do, and will misgender the bots in these books/the show. We cannot prevent it from happening. We just have to do the right thing and encourage usage of the correct pronouns.
If ART gets a masc VA, people will he/him it. If ART gets a femme VA, people will she/her it. It's inevitable. We cannot let mainstream take the joy out of our beloved media because they are not educated enough to understand what genderlessness is and the usage of it/its pronouns for people.
Now, on the topic of shipping. (If you are sensitive to the topic of shipping in the TMBD fandom I advise you to skip to the part that says "Shipping discussion over" or proceed with discretion)
I have three arguments to present:
(MBG AND MENSAHBOT SHIPPERS I LOVE YOU PLEASE KEEP DOING YOUR THING THIS IS NOTHING AGAINST YOU. IF ANYTHING I AM USING YOU AS A GOOD STANDARD EXAMPLE. ILY GUYS)
The show introduced character dynamics of two out of the three ships that were most popular in the fandom even before the TV show came out.
I reiterate, MBG/Murderathin, Mensahbot, and ARTMB/Murderhelion have all been a thing well before the show came out. In fact, they have been a thing ever since the first four books were released. Murderhelion wasn't invented when NE came out.
So, to address "People will ship them if they see Murderbot and ART as straight coded!"
People already do ship them. (Hi! By the way.) Not because they're "straight coded", whatever that means, but because we like the characters and we like their dynamic. That's it. Also, plenty of Murderhelion shippers are masc4masc, and plenty are masc4androgynous (hi again) In fact, some of them are femme4femme! With more femme leaning interpretations of Murderbot Masc4femme presentation has never been the issue, or the reason.
Murderathin shippers exist despite it being masc4masc. In fact, most in-fandom shipping across media has favored same-gender presentation shipping since the dawn of time. If you think straight ships are more common than same-gendered ones, you haven't been on the internet long enough (the M/M tag has the most amount of fics posted on AO3. This isn't a matter of being shipped because of "straight coding". Also, Murderathin is tagged as Other on AO3 anyway).
Mensahbot, a ship between a non-binary/genderless person and a woman, not a femme coded genderless character, a woman, is somehow not "straight coded" in comparison to our hypothetical masc4femme Murderhelion? It is not "straight coded", by the way! It is a ship between a non-binary person and a woman, it physically cannot be straight. Yes even if Murderbot is masc presenting. It is not a man or a woman, therefore Mensahbot is not straight despite Mensah being a woman. So, if a ship that includes a character that is explicitly a woman isn't "straight coded", why would a ship with a genderless femme presenting character be?
Both Murderathin and Mensahbot had some heavy implied subtext in the show. We already have an implied masc4femme ship in the show. This isn't new.
What I mean is, if your concern is "I don't want people to ship Murderbot and ART because of them being portrayed as masc and femme respectively", you're missing the point, by a long shot.
If you have a problem with masc4femme ships being "straight coded", that means you have a problem with Mensahbot as proportionally as you do masc4femme Murderhelion. And BOTH are perfectly valid non-binary ships, because one or more of the characters are explicitly, canonically non-binary.
Also, psst, Murderathin is also a non-binary ship. It is not a gay men ship, it's still non-binary in nature :)
(If you have a distaste for shipping in general, then that's a different thing. This post isn't about you.)
(If you dislike any of the ships mentioned above just because, or out of personal preference, this post isn't about you)
If mainstream wants to ship Murderbot and ART because they are masc4femme? Sure, whatever, flawed logic but there's nothing we can do about it. I'm just asking that you hold ARTMB/Murderhelion to the same standard as the other ships. If masc4masc and a masc4femme ships already exist, Murderhelion will exist regardless of ART's gender presentation.
Shipping discussion over. CONCLUSION
If you think making ART femme presenting, or just having a femme VA will make ART less non-binary/genderless, I advise you to please, please, check your biases.
I, out of sheer personal preference, would like ART to have a femme VA. HOWEVER, if it doesn't, I'll still be happy if they get its character right. I care about it enough to not care about the gender presentation of a canonically genderless character.
Thank you for reading this if you have. I needed to get this out before it eats me alive. I appreciate your attention
(I'm sorry for making an essay out of your post ESE akgjal I love you TTwTT)
I want to second the ""but mainstream fandom will ship them if it's a femme voice :( " is just ridiculous.""
M/M ships are usually the most popular ship in any fandom, even in fandoms where there's canon F/M
AO3 ship fics for Captain America and his canonical female lover interest:
6,155
AO3 ship fics for Captain America and his male best friend:
60,505
Fandom is not more likely to ship characters if they are a man and a woman I agree with the non-binary gate keeping criticisms above, a femmine sounding voice played by a woman is not less non-binary. Some non-binary people look like women, some look like men. I want to add that characters played by a man and woman are not less queer if people ship them if the characters are queer. Two ace characters in a QPR are queer even if it's a man in a woman. Two non-binary characters in a relationship are gay regardless of what sex they were assigned at birth or present as or you think they are...

An extremely exhaustive and representative poll of all of tumblr ever
Okay, cryptkeepers, let's do a super well-planned demographic survey.
How decrepit are you?
A puling infant - <20
Advertiser's wet dream - 20s
Still got it - 30s
How dare you not be embarrassed to exist - 40s
Basically dead - 50s
Sounds fake, but okay - 60s
BOW BEFORE THE LICH QUEEN, PUNY MORTALS - 70 and up
Six thousand? Already like 4x as many people as on polls that matter, but we can do better!
i just dont think J Jonah Jameson would be an ally like that
have you ever seen this panel
im sorry mr. jameson i didnt know you were like that....
would yāall ever date someone with the same name as you?
Iām sorry for adding directly to a post but I went to a wedding once where the groomās name was Loren and the brideās name was Lauren and at the end the officiant was all āintroducing Loren [surname] and Lauren [surname], husband and wifeā and the entire assembled lost it
also sorry for adding on but at my high school there was a Dominic and a Dominique who were dating and everyone just called themĀ āDom and Dommerā which is honestly the funniest shit ever
My parents are both named Terry (spelled differently) but Iām pretty sure thatās one of the reasons my mom never changed her last name.
People would call and ask for Terry and child me would be like āboy or girl?ā And theyād panic and hang up. My mom found this endlessly amusing.
Why would you leave this GOLD in the tags??
Had to submit it to the tags for peer review
I know a woman with 2 first names, whose last name growing up was Chapman. She married a man whose last name was Chapman. So her name is Something Someone Chapman Chapman.
My friend Sam is dating someone else named Sam. They refer to this as Sams Club.
Didnāt Taylor Lautner marry a woman named Taylor
if you see a Jabberwocky in an American National Park i cannot stress this enough you HAVE to report them to the nearest Park ranger. I know, I know, they fill human hearts with terror and whimsy in equal measure, but they are an aggressively invasive species in the Americas. Jackalopes are at risk of becoming extinct because during shedding season they have no natural defences against jaws that bite and claws that catch.
You don't have to worry about them killing it, they're actually endangered in England due to Victorian Era overhunting, so the British government's provided the National Park service with Vorpal Tranquilizer Darts so they can safely transport them to their native British Countryside where they can feast on borogroves and jubjub birds to their hearts' content.
Jabberwocks are starting to really intrude on the territory of the Snallygaster and crowd them out. Please report when you see them and help preserve our American monsters!
Biologists prefer the term āfearsome crittersā, just FYI. They resemble monsters but only due to convergent evolution.
Well that's debatable. Taxonomically a "monster" is a pretty indistinct category that can even include humans, and "fearsome critters" is an informal classification largely only used in parts of the United States.
I thought that the New Jersey Devil, native to the American pine barrens in New Jersey, was a Jabberwock.
Saw it in a documentary, showed a picture and called it a Jabberwock
The only two replies on this tho

Iām just thinking about how many times Iāve heard my dad on a long call with an obvious scammer and Iāll start begging him to get off the phone because I always think heās a very easy mark and heāll just keep going and then after a while heāll say something like āI died 20 years agoā and hang up.
Virgin Millennial Daughter with 20 hrs of screentime a day: Dad! Theyāre scamming you! Dad! Stop! They will take your savings and your identity! Hang up before they SWAT you!
Chad Boomer dad with a flip phone he has not recharged since 2014: Well gee I wish I could give you my bank account number after you spent all this time on the phone explaining this car deal with me but I donāt have access to my finances because I am in Rikers for felony murder.
