My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.

blue sunset on Mars is a real phenomenon caused by the way Martian dust scatters sunlight.
Unlike Earth, where sunsets are red and orange due to the scattering of shorter blue wavelengths by our atmosphere, Mars has an extremely fine dust that scatters blue light more efficiently near the Sun.
So during sunset on Mars, the sky turns reddish-brown while the area around the Sun glows a soft blue. It’s the opposite of what we experience on Earth.
NASA’s rovers have captured this eerie sight
It's called the Global Justice Report, it is here. This is an actionable plan which can be sent to legislators and demanded of political parties. We could save the world within our lifetimes.
It has always been possible. It is still possible.

I want artwork where we draw in between panels
Her falling in the white space and changing into this comfy outfit magical girl transformation style before falling into the second panel
sound on!
(found here, if anyone has an actual source I’d love to link it properly, as I can’t decipher the signature)
Also because I have had it on my mind and because this is always an Artanis Nerwen Alatariel Arafinwiel appreciation blog, let’s talk about the high-level shit going on with her gift to Gimli Gloinson.
Gift-giving isn’t just gift-giving: every single one of the gifts she gives is a big deal, including the pretty belts she gives Boromir and the younger hobbits, which might sometimes see like the kind of also-rans of the run. So let’s look at them.
When I was a lawyer at Gibson Dunn in D.C., we took our summer associates to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. A survivor spoke to us and said something that stuck with me:
Lawyers need to know the holocaust did not begin with camps. It began when Jews were removed from institutions - above all, legal institutions. Judges stripped of their robes. Lawyers disbarred. Then, when law-groups were Judenrein, they codified laws that made discrimination systematic and "legal."
First, you remove the Jews from the institutions. Then, Jews can be discriminated against without representation.
On Monday, Mayor Mamdani announced his 18-member Advisory Committee on the Judiciary. The Committee was promised to be "truly reflective of New York City."
Not one of the 18 is Jewish.
Not one Jewish attorney, former judge, or law professor - in a city where one in eight residents is Jewish and even Justice John Leventhal, recommended by the State's Chief Judge, was rejected.
It is estimated that over 50% of the New York bar is Jewish. That means there is a 0.0004% chance of no Jews being selected to the Committee.
Mamdani’s marginalization of Jews has been ongoing, and few voices on the Left have spoken up.
On Day 1, Mamdani revoked the IHRA antisemitism definition (top priority); he changed the NYPD guidance protecting houses of worship, eliminated Jews from the City's immigrant-heritage map, called for the arrest of the prime minister of the only Jewish state, and now created a Judenrein Judiciary Committee.
My grandmother, Leah, survived Nazi Germany. Before the laws, before the violence, she told me how she was pushed out of her high school groups. Then, once excluded from all activities, she was bullied and marginalized.
We are already seeing Step 2 in NYC. Two weeks ago, on a Jewish Holiday, two men were stabbed outside Upper West Side synagogues - one wearing a kippah- and yesterday, Jewish students were attacked. Every 26 hours, there is a hate crime against Jews in NYC.
In NYC, there is a concerted effort to disappear Jews from public life and leadership.
No one on the Left is speaking out. If this discrimination was happening to any other group, the chorus would be deafening.
To be clear, Jews will find a way. Many are already taking their talents elsewhere. When white-shoe firms shut Jewish lawyers out, they built firms that now dominate. Cardozo, Louis Marshall, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg all found a way despite discrimination.
But NYC will be worse off without us. A city government that is judenrein - cleansed of Jews – does not just hurt the Jews, but hurts the city.
The tragedy is not just that Jews were left out of the institutions. It is that the institutions were left without the Jews.
If you see this and have not yet spoken out, I encourage you to do so.
Doesn’t Netanyahu have a warrant out for his arrest? https://www.icc-cpi.int/defendant/netanyahu
Netanyahu
It’s not because he’s Jewish
Also Justice John Leventhal was rejected from a judicial advisory committee because he served on Ghislaine Maxwell’s legal defense team. Not because he’s Jewish, but because he chose to defend her (he wasn’t appointed).

The Great Gatsby
"After you defeat your enemies, you cannot spare their children or they will come for you once they're grown, and the cycle of revenge never ends." Yeah duh, if you're just gonna leave them there?? No shit they'll hunt you down and avenge their parents.
What you're gonna do is take them in and raise them as your own. Don't lie to them what happened, or try to hide it from them; explain why it happened. Why you really, really had to do that. Because if you can't raise someone to trust you and your judgement after killing their parents in cold blood right in front of them, then maybe you are the villain that they grew up to see you as.
Pretty sure the UN calls both of those genocide.
Why and how are you enemies with an entire ethnicity? That's pretty racist.
Look, you need to understand this ONLY works sometimes. Zeus literally warned a guy of doing just this, bc thr gods themselves would drive your new adopted son to killing you anyway!
Every part of "just do the most logical thing" goes out of the window as soon as literal divine intervention comes into the picture. They hate it when people are sensible, and they'll go out of their way to make sure that stupid shit happens if you try.
Unfortunately, the logical thing to do in case of divine intervention is to have amicable relationship with some other gods prior to that, because the first god to show interest has a priority.
In case of raising children of your slain enemies, I suppose it would mean securing divine blessing for the adoption?
Unfortunately if you didn't do that and are currently experiencing a hostile divine intervention it's kind of too late.
This is why you always make sure to seduce, or at least fuck, the god in charge, to ensure their favour beforehand. An ounce of prevention is worth getting pounded.
From the tags:
Yes, but that would all hinge on expecting Odysseus to resist the urge to lie. You could put the man in a SAW trap where all he'd have to do would be to tell the truth about something inconsequential, and he'd fail.
But Odysseus is killed by his biological son from Circe who does not know he killed his father at the time since he’s never met him. So adopt and raise a kid to love you and he’ll kill you since he’s not yours biologically and you’re responsible for his real parent’s death or abandon and don’t raise the kid you had with a goddess witch that you didn’t know about and still die.
You can’t escape the fact your child will kill you.

The names of weekdays in Danish sounds all mystical and cool until…
Søndag (Sunday) Day of The Sun.
Mandag (Monday) Day of The Moon.
Tirsdag (Tuesday) Tyr’s Day, the old half-jotun god of law, order, fairness and combat.
Onsdag (Wednesday) Odin’s Day, the old god king of wisdom, magic and warfare.
Torsdag (Thursday) Thor’s Day, the old god of thunder, rain, strength and battle.
Fredag (Friday) Freya’s or Freyr’s Day, the old sibling gods of prosperity, wealth, love and peace.
Lørdag (Saturday) Day of Bath, bath day…
Our ancestors were big into bath time, so I suppose the message here is that self care should be considered sacred and that cleanliness is next to godliness?
English days are all the same until we get to Saturday
Saturn’s Day, Roman god of agriculture, harvest, time, abundance, and wealth (also Roman version of Chronos)
The Roman days of the week followed a similar pattern of days named for gods and planets associated with a given god
The days were named after the classical planets of Hellenistic astrology, in the order: Sun (Helios), Moon (Selene), Mars (Ares), Mercury (Hermes), Jupiter (Zeus), Venus (Aphrodite), and Saturn (Cronus).
The Romans believed Oden was a version of Hermes and mapped their gods to the gods of that day of the week, Mars = Ares = Tyre.
The Romans concurred/colonized Britain bit withdrew from Britain in A.D. 410, and then Anglo-Saxons concurred and colonized and English switch to their days of the week except for Saturday which kept the Roman name.
Maybe the English just didn’t like baths and rejected bath day
Y'all.
I did some digging.
The word that led to all this was "scry".
Shit be wildin on threads this week
You should also be able to figure out what a text is saying without understanding every word. 90% of the time you'll do just fine even if a word is unfamiliar. You should be able to understand the meaning of a word through context, or at least the meaning of the sentence or paragraph. There are some rare instances where the specific word is crucial, but most of the time it's not necessary to understand the text.
This is a skill you are taught in foreign language classes btw. When you get to a certain level, they give you texts with words you probably don't know yet, and you have to summarise the text without looking any of them up. It really helps with your literacy skills. I can really recommend picking up some books with unfamiliar vocabulary and trying to understand it without looking up words

your tags are very correct and also read like poetry to me
Plain Language is an accessibility thing
If you’re reading this, you are probably a pretty big enthusiast for plain language and are promoting the cause in some way or other. Thank
But it’s for direct communication where the goal is to make the language easily understandable to things like forms you have to fill out
It is not for creative writing
Like the kind of language you need for a warning signing with clear meaning
Here the drawing and meaning of the artwork is clear because it’s communicative text
Creative Art on the other hand
Does not need to clearly communicate something because that is not the function of art
Plain language as disability rights activism is “we encourage government agencies and businesses to write clear and understandable communication.”
Not make art understandable because the beauty of words and what they’re doing is the point with fiction
