You can ignore this if you like I'm just gonna say some words :)
am a white cis woman so I experience a lot of privilege in this world.
However, I am also a queer woman who is a massive nerd.
I'm a nerd about fantasy literature, fantasy TV shows, history, politics, musicals, tabletop games, RPG in general. I can be a bit of a know it all and I inspire to be a cross between Hermione and Luna but I live in an age of social media.
Social media has gifted me many things including some of the best friends anyone could ask for. It has also introduced me to amazing conversations about the things that I loved anyway and forced me to expand my mind. I have read essays on anything from The Lord Of The Rings to The West Wing. I can't tell you how many thousands of words of FanFiction I've read about characters I adore.
But I don't always feel wholly welcome.
Sometimes it's because I'm queer and sometimes it's because I'm a woman and quite a loud woman. I am not good at being quiet and I won't be quiet. If I have an opinion it will be a loud one and lots of people don't like that.
It's okay I can deal with the most of the time but sometimes it means removing myself from the fandom to avoid more pain.
I haven't seen any of the MARVEL films released in the past year, maybe longer. I don't feel welcome in that space anymore.
This is just me and I can only talk about what I've experienced.
There are places where because I'm a woman or because I'm queer there are those that will say I am not welcome or that certain things aren't meant for me and to stop shoving my 'way of life' down their throats.
I play Dungeons & Dragons and I freaking love it but I have had people tell me that it is weird and that only freaks and weirdos play or that I shouldn't be playing because I'm a girl.
An ex-boyfriend once asked me why I needed to go to university.
It was a strange question and I don't think I'll ever understand why he asked it but I think that was the day I first realised that I was gonna be questions and scrutinised on everything I love and wanted to do for the rest of my life.
That's okay because I'll stand up for what I love and you don't have to like it, you don't even have to agree with it but I will ask that you respect my decision to enjoy it.
I am a queer female nerd, and proud of it.
