They did what they thought was right.
so many things to dig into in fatws, but especially how it focuses on how everyone feels justified in their actions. People do what they think is right or fair or acceptable.
lotta discourse around the show. There are some interesting nuances in walker's story. Like yes, he made choices that were rooted in anger and insecurity that maybe could/should have been different, but it's also not completely on him. the gov is at fault for misinterpreting what the captain america role WAS and what it actually required. They put a random soldier in a hero/icon's role and expected Walker to hold it the way Steve Rogers did. Which is crazy, considering Steve developed and solidified the Cap role/essence around his own personality. That's not transferable. Walker is a different person. You can't just pass off Steve's steveness to a random person and expect it to stay the same, or have the same results.
in his life, his previous roles, Walker would have been affirmed in wanting to avenge his best friend at all costs. But in this setting—representing the Cap legacy, and in a post-Blip world—what he thinks is "right" does not land well at all. It's fascinating to think about.
GRGJKH I also see so much discourse around Sam's choices. Again, as he says directly, he did what he thought was right. I can't speak on the emotions and weight on him as he made that choice, but I know he didn't feel like it was right to enthusiastically, ignorantly take up the shield and carry on. It's complicated. Society's reactions to him are already complicated, and are made even more so by the hero legacy AND symbolism.
Sure, maybe some of the choices he makes in the story feel inconsistent with his established character in CA:Winter Soldier. But I can understand why he retired the shield, and I can acknowledge that this show wants us to sit in how complicated choice and personhood are.
can someone explain to me what it is about john walker specifically in thunderbolts that makes him hot AF for me but him in TFATWS is a hard fucking no???
it’s because he’s emotionally broken huh?
