Cardassian - evolved for a wetland environment, mostly piscivores. not great at running and are a bit clumsy on dry terrain. 2nd, very limited mobility serrated ”beak” jaw inside the main beak. based their design off herons and bitterns
Klingon - evolved for a dry, cold tundra environment, omnivorous, willing to eat most things due to their harsh environment, digestive system is similar to vultures. based their design off ratites and vultures
Ferengi - evolved for a semi-aquatic lifestyle in heavy rain and dense forests, insectivorous. rather low on the “food chain” in their habitat. shiny shell only appears during breeding season. based their design off cephalopods [and those land octopus from the future is wild lol]

Something about Ziyal being used to further the stories of the men in her life (Dukat, Garak) (also Kira) instead of being fully fleshed out as the fascinating character she had the potential to be even unto her death being used to show her father’s potential redemption through his love for her. Like they would start an interesting plot for her to be complicated and cool, and then the episode was over? Or she’d kiss Garak and never show up again? Or never really react to her father abandoning her to die on ds9? And for some reason she was never really shown developing her relationship with Kira even though that would have been great for both of them?

I love when people see a Star Trek species that looks like a humanoid with half the show's budget plastered on their face in the form of silicone and paint and they say "Oh yes this is great. But what if it was an animal". So here's my Cardassian.
They move kind of like very agile bears: mostly on all-fours, but easily capable of standing on two legs. Their hair benefits from regular sand baths.
