i like to imagine that before shallan and adolin met hesina and lirin, they thought kaladin was on the teamâ„¢ with family issues. like. he is so traumatized and broken; of course he also has shitty parent(s)! just like them! until kaladin started lore-dropping bombs like "mom kept all of the drawings i made as a kid" or "father once stayed up all night to hold me because i was having nightmares" and they figured out that kaladin, in fact, NEVER was on the team. he is traumatized by numerous things, but cruel parents are not among them.
Kaladin: My father treats Rlain with more affection than me because I am not the man he expects me to be

This was my first ever stormlight au, "Tien Finds a Very Special Rock," or what I also affectionately call "Literally the Most Obvious AU for Szeth Stans Reading WoK." Originally I figured he'd take the oathstone from the belongings of a terminal patient, but I think it's important to me for the vibes of this au that Tien acquires it in the most innocent and innocuous way possible. imagine being Lirin and Hesina and your assumed-dead son who you already grieved comes back alive and is one of the leading members of the reborn Knights Radiant.
Months later you come to terms with it and accept the new version of him, then some bald assassin tells you that little jaunt in Shinovar actually killed him for real this time.
Grieving process restarts all over again, maybe a decade (? we’re in Era 2 speculation territory) passes, you raise your 3rd son with multiple scars in your heart.
Then you find out your firstborn just casually became a Demi-God and replaced your God-like figure Jezrien and is actively giving therapy lessons to other Demi-Gods and is leading the charge against Retribution.
What the actual hell do you do in their situation. Especially Oroden like how do you explain to your youngest child his dead oldest brother is basically God now….
i really do love the way lirin and hesina are fighting to protect kaladin in the moments between when he arrives and reveals himself as a radiant, when everyone thinks he’s a runaway slave with a shash brand. like they love him so much, they don’t care what he’s done, they want him back no matter the cost, they’re his parents and they love him and they’re so happy he’s alive. they don’t care who he is now, they don’t care what he’s done. ughhhhh i love them

A little snapshot of passive aggressive niceties from 500 years ago at Houtou Castle, because while Rasetsunyo accepts her husband taking on a concubine as just the way Things Are back then, THIS ONE triggers her alarm klaxons and she doesn't appreciate Gyokumen's mild obsession with her son nor the woman's emotional neglect of Lirin, who innocently mirrors her mother's real feelings for the queen.
Feelings Kougaiji doesn't appreciate one bit, and he'd be lying if he said he didn't quietly resent his father for bringing another woman and her brat home to disrespect his mum (even as he grows to accept and adore Lirin). Notes and headcanons under cut.
