gay men in books today: i have given thought to my sexual orientation, and i have realised i have Gay Feelings for my friend i hang out with. i will confess, and we will kiss.

(not) gay men in classic lit: i drew a portrait of my ideal woman and made love to it and realised only later, delirious, that i drew my childhood best friend i havent spoken to in years and who has consumed my every thought since we were children. he is my brother, my master, my companion, he has reshaped my world and given birth to the man i am today. i marvel at how handsome he is as he boxes shirtless in his yard. we kiss on the mouth and i long for him the rest of my life. // i have committed a heinous crime and and i am plagued with guilt and paranoia and self-loathing and gave myself a delirious fever. i am full of hatred for all mankind and have just thought how i would verbally abuse and spit on anyone who would dare talk to me as i unconsciously walked to my only friend’s house. i havent spoken to him in months and he welcomes me with open arms. he nurses me and spoon-feeds me while im driven half-mad by the blood on my hands, which he does not see.

In all of existance.#Demian is a coming of age story that leans very heavy into Jungian Psychology.#It also is full of a level of homosexual pining that just....kept escalating.#Might not be for everyone - but if you want to read more classics and wish it scratched the same yearning itch as early wangxian?#Yeah Demian might be the book for you (plus it's barely 6 chapters long).#Encountering a boy who you feel both loathing and drawn to as a youth? Who proposes radical ideas that teeter on heresy?#Spending years without him but longing for his presence so intensely in your life you collect things that remind you of him?#Catching him without a shirt and being so struck by his physic that your worldview takes a shift?#The god damn wielding 'a matching sign/symbol' that marks him - now marking you?#Meanwhile the person causing this torment is just like 'Wow I really wanted to be friends - why are you so distant with me?'#Whatever neurotic hellscape Sinclair and LWJ went through - they would have been walking it together.#I'm leaning hard on the queer elements here - the psychology of what they go through is also 'clawing at the walls' worthy.#Both of them have to unpack years of guilt and shame to discover their own value systems.#To emerge from a world in which we see a light and dark side of everything - only to discover there is more nuance in reality.#Sinclair and LWJ are the egg that must crack in order to grow and become their truest self.#To remain inside is to show only a pristine exterior - and rot away inside. I love reading about friendships that border the platonic and romantic feeling, the greatness of all of it. The feelings that are so intense they can't exist without their ugly counterparts.
