This cactus is insane! They live to be over 200 years old and are immensely tall, like giants towering over the desert. Saguaro cacti only live in the Sonoran desert and are a protected keystone species. It’s illegal to touch them. And they’re a cactus so maybe it’s a good idea not to touch them! As a committed practitioner of the Ashtanga Yoga System who practices 6 times a week for the last couple of years, I have certainly experienced my fair share of physical pain and injury. Over time I have come to understand that my injuries have allowed me to find depth and strength in my body and in myself. Ultimately this physical pain brought me into a more intimate understanding of who I am and how to best support myself, on and off the mat. Finally I'm back with my regular practice yesterday after injuring my lower back from Yoganidrasana, 3 weeks ago. Happy International Yoga Day! I got up at the crack of sparrows today and did the Ashtanga third series for the first time in yonks! It was intense! This is one of the many awkward postures - Viranchyasana An ashtanga practice is a challenging set sequence of postures. You do the complete 90 minute sequence 6 days a week with a rest day on a Sunday. Most people will practice primary series (the sequence my balance classes are based on) and with time and LOTS of practice, progress to intermediate (second) and maybe even the advanced sequences (third to sixth). One of oldest living beings on the planet lives in the Sonoran and Mojave desert. Do you have any idea what it is? It’s called the creosote bush. It isn’t the cactus behind me but we saw it on the amazing hikes we went on. The oldest one alive today is 12,000 years old. It has a beautiful fragrance that gets released when it rains.
