One of the last practices I did at the shala before #typhoonodette slammed Siargao so bad. Swipe left to see the aftermath. When we receive a tragedy or a shock in our lives, our body tends to go into fight meaning looking for someone to blame or flight meaning we try to calm ourselves with clichés like "everything happens for a reason" response. In these trying times like in yoga, when we feel our body resisting, is to breathe through it. We must become more present than usual. By breathing into our discomfort, we empower ourselves to feel uncomfortable without panicking. Each new breath draws us more deeply into awareness and allows us to move on to the next breath, the next step. We feel sadness, horror, grief, compassion, acceptance, anger, relief, sorrow, and, just for a moment, awareness of it all. There are days when we feel super demotivated, uninspired and whine a lot in our daily practice but remembering why we practice is usally all we need to get us to actually do it, be it whatever reason we have. And the next time we're just about to hit the snooze button 20x in our phone alarms in the morning or feast on a buffet in the evening instead of going to practice we can remember the reasons and intentions why we really practice. Maybe it will help us to get on our mat and maybe it won’t but it’s worth a try, isn't it? Some days we need every trick in the book to get us to roll out that mat, or even go to the shala but we all know that we have never, ever regretted doing it. There is no easy way to say this but the reality is that the Ashtanga Yoga Method is really hard. The longer we practice the more we forget what a marathon the Primary Series really is. For total yoga beginners this can seem totally dreadful and defeating. The Ashtanga Yoga Method is meant not to be easy on the first try. This is one of the lessons in the practice. Instead of making the method easy, the practice asks us to make our mind and thinking strong. Emotions are teachers and they themselves have a short lifespan. Emotions only last longer because we reprocess and repeat scenarios which recreate the same response over and over again. Feeling and processing our emotions is not the same as retelling the same story over and over again. Emotional maturity and truly enlightened self-awareness comes from being fully present to our emotions, both the good and the bad. There is a delicate line between allowing our emotions to rule our life and suppressing our emotions. It’s like the practice, we are not there to perfect the asana, we are there to feel our whole body. In life, we're not here to only feel happiness forevermore. Primary Series or Yoga Chikitsa strengthens and purifies the body. In this series we are introduced to the third limb of the eight limbs of the Ashtanga Yoga Method which is asana or posture. The postures will later serve us as a tool to discover what lies within the body. Yoga Chikitsa teaches us about discipline, commitment, and faith. The postures in this series serve as a tool to make the body flexible and supple. It is only with continuous and devoted practice over a long period of time that we slowly begin to feel the effects of this beautiful practice. Intermediate Series or Nadhi Shoddana purifies our nervous system. It helps us to bring prana to areas of the body that have been locked up, closed down and maybe even forgotten.
