Summary:
The Room of Requirement was severely damaged in the war, but not so much that it could not provide for one lost student and another young heroâespecially when they needed each other most of all.
Excerpt:
âI think Iâm broken,â Harry confessed.Â
âDonât say that,â Draco said, because he wasnât good at fixing thingsâheâd been taught broken possessions were tossed in the rubbish or Banished into the space between, which was probably why he was no good now at putting his own life back together, much less able to help Potter.Â
Picking at a frayed thread on his blanket, Potter bit his lip. âI am, though. I died, Draco. On purpose. Had to. Alone except for the company of people Iâd already lost. Ghosts. I had to go to the ForestâŠto die.â Harryâs voice shook. âI was so tired; I almost wanted it all to end.â He closed his eyes for a moment before continuing. âI had to come back because it wasnât over. My job wasnât done. But now it is and Iâm still so tired and I donât know why Iâm here.â
âI do,â Draco breathed, as the realization dawned on him. âWeâre in the Room of Requirement. I think youâre here because I need you.â
Harry stared at him. âYou donât need me. You might have needed that letter for your mother, but thereâs no guarantee that will work.â
âI donât think thatâs the only reason.â
âWhy would you need me? You donât even like me,â Harry said.
âIâm not sure it matters. Do you need me?â
Harry frowned. âI needed help with the bandage where I was cursed.â
 Draco nodded.
âI donât think thatâs all, though.â Harry added softly.
âSomeone to fight with,â Draco said, damning the darkness and its tongue-loosening magic.
 âCry with,â Harry added.
 âTo heal with.â
They sat in silence, lost in their thoughts, until Draco saw Harry cringe. âSomeone to wake me when I have nightmares.â
Draco gave him a sad smile. âSomeone to forgiveââ
âAnd ask for forgiveness from,â Harry finished.
âSomeone who understands.â
âSomeone to remind me that Iâm human.â Harryâs lips were parted, the moonlight on his face.
He wasnât beautiful; he was just Harry.
Draco didnât know why he did it, but he leaned in and gently kissed Harryâs lips.
Pulling back, he took in Harryâs face. The lost look was gone from his eyes, but Draco wasnât able to interpret what he saw in its place.
âWhyâŠ?â Harry asked, tilting his head.Â
âI donât know.â Draco bit his lip. It was the truth. He didnât know. Certainly he hadnât ever thought of kissing Potter before, but here they were, scarred flesh and blood, and Harry was making him feel emotions other than fear and grief for once, and he just wanted to get lost in them. Heâd acted on instinct more than anything.
âDo it again,â Harry said softly.
