It might be March, but better late than never!

While I posted more fic in 2024 (see my 2024 year in fic) than I ever have before, I also read an absolute shitload. Below the cut are some of my favourites that were published in 2024, arranged by word count.

As always, there is an absolute wealth of talent in this fandom and the amount of goodness we have here never ceases to amaze me. The fics below all really did it for me in a number of different ways. Though my opinion is subjective, I will happily vouch for all of them. Happy reading! 📚

Draco Malfoy? They say he's disturbed. Manipulative. Controlling. That he dosed his boyfriend, Harry Potter, with love potions? That when they broke up, the Weasleys threw a party!

Rumour has it that Malfoy is still in denial. Allegedly, he camped outside Mr Potter's residence for months. And now he’s stalked Mr Potter across the globe!

But the question is...is that really what happened?

The quick answer is no.

But the long answer involves deadly curse, a suicidal road trip in the woods of Indonesia, two psychos willing to die for each other, two traditional sentient blades, two rituals, seventeen lemon trees, twenty mortal perils, a hundred shags, a thousand superstitions, and a million heaven’s blessings.

The fic was a collab with my amazing friend @fantalfart who drew such a magnificent illustrations aka memes aka the hottest nsfw artworks. One of them was this illustration of draco being his-unhinged-and-obssessed self which was the heart of this story. And two hottest nsfw arts which you can see in the end of each chapter of this fic.

This was set in my home country and explored some Indonesian folklore horror. And a self-indulgent try to mix Indonesian existing folklore magical system into HP world (which was my childhood dream lmao)

The professor moved a couple of steps forward. “And you, m'boy?”

Harry inhaled, curious. The scent wrapped around him at once, warm and persistent. “Green apple,” he began, without thinking. “Freshly cut. Parchment, rain… and orange blossom.”

Slughorn gave a small, pleased clap of his fingertips, careful not to spill the vial. “Excellent. What evocative combinations!” He returned to the front of the classroom and held the flask aloft. “This, my students, is Amortentia.” He announced at last. “The most powerful love potion in existence. It does not create true love, of course, but it generates a very convincing sensation, and very dangerous, obsession, if administered carelessly.”

Several students straightened in their seats. Others let out nervous laughter.

“Each person smells within it what they find most attractive.” Slughorn continued. “What they most desire. What is most… irresistible to them.”

Something shifted in Harry’s stomach.

Green apple. Parchment. Rain. Orange blossom.

It wasn’t a new scent.

He frowned, trying to recall where he’d first encountered that combination, and the memory arrived with such force that he threw up his Occlumency shields on pure instinct.

A warm room at the Burrow. Draco asleep on his side, hair dishevelled, no cologne, his breathing slow and even. The scent on the pillow. On the sheets.

He looked up, almost involuntarily.

And found Draco’s eyes already on his.

They know.

The One Where Everyone Sleeps with Malfoy

Summary: How do you deal with Draco Malfoy becoming a post-war sex god and casually infiltrating your friend group? You don’t. Or: The One Where Harry Loses His Shit.

REC by @angeldog5: This fic made me laugh more than I can remember laughing in a long, long time. The star of the show—as you will be irretrievably convinced—is one Harry James Potter who loses his precious little mind when Malfoy begins making friends with his friends, then promptly proceeds in introducing them to hitherto untrespassed heights of pleasure (I’m looking at you Neville “I came so hard I—” Longbottom). Anyone would go a little crazy, right? Perfectly understandable, right?? Right???! Well, as he does in all things, Harry Potter goes big. His crash out will confound,provoke, astonish! 

Jungatheart has a way of writing that reads like water flows because she has an incredible instinct for balance. I shed tears of laughter and joy, I closed my laptop with a happy little ache in my heart. Do yourself a favor and read this, for real for real.

The Curse-Breaker’s Guide to Accidentally Sleeping With Your Partner

Rating: E Word count: 10.5k

Summary: A snowstorm. A cursed cabin. And two cursebreaker partners who definitely aren't attracted to each other.

REC by @fluffyunderneath: As ever with this author, as soon as you start reading you're dropped into the action and immersed in the story. This one has all the tropes we love: pining but oblivious partners, there's only one bed (in a remote Finnish cabin, no less) and a magical curse trapping them inside until they have sex. And if that doesn't sell it, let's add a scorching hot, tattooed Harry into the mix 🥵

In only 10k words, you get a full sense of how much Draco wants Harry, fun dialogue, hot smut and THEN the sweetest ending. All written in Jungatheart's easy to read, clever style. Perfect👌

Summary: Harry loves getting lost in the anonymous violence of the mosh pit until his brain shuts up. It’s one of the few highlights of his otherwise soul-crushingly mundane life. Everything is exactly as expected, right up until he realises the bassist locking lips with the singer on stage is someone he knows.

REC by skotini: With a summary like that, I couldn't help being hooked right from the start! Down-and-out-Harry recovering after the war, bass-player Draco, jealousy, and sleuthing all come together in this wonderful fic which was written as a Christmas gift and is an absolutely fantastic read. Full of sizzling kisses, pining, and self-discovery, treat yourself to reading this story - which has earned a place in the bookmarked collection 'comfy read pure happiness' - and I can definitely agree! <3

REC by @nsasquith: I first saw Jungatheart post a little text excerpt on Tumblr and was hooked. I reached out to her and told her that this NEEDED to be continued, and continued it was. I then offered to create the text graphics for her. What transpired was a month-long collab with such a creative! The epistolary story told via text takes place over nine years and follows Draco and Harry coming back together again, and again, fighting through the trenches to be with each other. There was always something in the way preventing their HEA, but they got there!

REC by @nsasquith: A microfic which, again, I told her needed to be expanded. Jungatheart created 6,969 words of pure poetry. A beautiful story in which down-and-out Draco doesn’t feel he is good enough for anyone, and doesn’t want to stick around after any sexual encounters. In walks Harry Potter, and after mind-blowing sex, Draco is set to leave again. Only this time, Harry doesn’t let him. It was such a privilege to Beta this fic for Jungatheart, to see her creative mind in real time. Strongly recommend anyone read this fic <3

Summary: A post-war story about guilt, healing, and the slow, stubborn love that grows anyway.

REC by @angeldog5: This is one of my favorite pieces of all time. A story about Harry and Draco post-war growing and healing together through the trials of an Azkaban sentence and mutual trauma. My words cannot convey the love, ache, fear and tenderness that Jungatheart has woven into his short tale, like a little love letter to Drarry themselves. If you’re anything like me, this fic will sit like a lucky stone in your pocket that you brush your thumb against from time to time when you need to be reminded that things get better, that love makes us better. My highest recommendation <3

I Feel Better

Summary: Draco Malfoy is not losing his mind, thank you very much. He’s just... hearing voices.

REC by @panthemanda: This story is a multi-layered journey into the lives of Draco and Harry after the war. While there are a lot of post-war fics as it’s a popular trope to write with endless possibilities, Jungatheart does it in a unique and spirited way that is unlike any other fic I’ve read. As with her other stories, her writing is creative, magnetic, funny, poetic, visceral, witty, strong or soft when appropriate, and enticing. She has this incredible innate ability to truly take you on a journey, and smack you in the face with wit made out of pure gold when you least expect it. I’m particularly amazed by and fond of her ability to describe things in such beautiful and visceral ways. Examples: “For several minutes, he just lay there, taking shallow breaths like he had to relearn how to breathe,” and, “he was the human equivalent of a warm croissant,” and, “The ‘him’ sat like a splinter in his throat.” She isn’t too wordy and she uses her words in ways that make the story as a whole that much stronger and more effective. "And okay, yes, he’d considered, briefly, the possibility of shagging him. Only in passing. But that part of the plan had been thoroughly scratched out. Crossed off. Burned off the list and he’d had a funeral to that idea. It was a closed casket affair." Using language like this is such a great way to emphasize how a character feels and thinks about something, but it’s also not easy to do well. Yet she does it in such a creative, concise way. I didn’t feel like I was just reading along; I felt like I was experiencing the characters’ emotions, thoughts, and actions with multiple senses. At some points, I swore I could even almost smell things in certain scenes. Her characters come to life right off the page, right in front of your eyes. Draco and Harry are full-bodied, fleshed-out individuals with their own distinct personalities and quirks, and she does this with her minor characters as well. They don’t feel flat because she pays them their dues as supportive roles in Draco’s and Harry’s lives. I leave you with one last quote from the fic about Harry’s hair: "Thick, dark, and windswept, dramatic in every way possible. He wanted to give it a proper eye roll and politely ask it to calm the hell down."
