Hi! Saw your reblog about asexuality being caused my trauma and I just wanted to know: isn't it better to call that hyposexuality? You know, people have been trying to tell homophobes that sexuality is something that you're born with and having a sexuality caused my trauma in the same pile can be confusing
Im not in any ways trying to be a bigot btw! I am myself a hypersexual asexual, im just genuinely curious about the terminology!
Hello!
Here's the thing, hyposexuality is a psychiatric term that I largely don't respect. It's not even a trauma-based diagnosis, so asexuality itself is often considered disordered under hyposexuality, not specifically trauma-based asexuality.
But asexuality caused by trauma is still asexuality. It's not become magically different because trauma is involved-Many people's sexualities involve/revolve around/are affected by their trauma, it doesn't mean their sexualities have to be named something entirely different to reflect that.
And sometimes people's sexualities change, with trauma and not-That doesn't just apply to asexuality. I think sexuality is confusing and that's fine. The idea we're all born with innate and unchangeable sexualities just isn't realistic.
It's like the "gender is fake but sex is real" type of explanations for trans people existing; it might work okay with a low-rank transphobe who's actually trying to understand but it's not really realistic to how actual people work.
We shouldn't try to separate certain queer people out as "irregular" so that homophobes and shit will find us more tolerable or so that our sexualities are less confusing to others. Like, I understand what you mean but that'd only make them more targeted and more isolated. And make the community less of a community.
This isn't to say people can't use the term. I'm just saying the term asexual works just fine, hyposexuality doesn't even specifically refer to that and y'know, live and let live.
Don't worry, though! I didn't at all assume you were trying to be an ass, I like thoughtful questions and it's always good to chat things out when they're confusing you so I'm glad to answer. I hope this makes sense! <3
(If not, feel free to ask me to clarify!)
