Ik voel me weer eens hélémaal kut
The danger in the Dutch elections isn’t just Geert Wilders - our party system makes it practically impossible for him to get an absolute majority in the House of Representatives. The last time a party had an absolute majority was in 1891. A minority government, should he end up the largest party without a full majority, is also more than unlikely to happen, because he’d need the support of (an)other party/parties without forming a coalition, which - well, let’s just say the times this happened, it never really ended well.
No, a good chunk of the danger is in the people who think they’d have to vote strategically in order to prevent Wilders from getting a majority, thus voting for the “lesser” of two evils, the VVD/Rutte.
The idea that we have to vote strategically is fed by both an incomplete understanding of the Dutch system, and the media - especially international media, who’ve dubbed Wilders “the Dutch Trump” (if anything, Trump is the American Wilders - we’ve unfortunately had to deal with Blondy McBadhair for the last 12 years), highly exaggerating the man’s influence should he, by some apocalypse-level event, end up Prime Minister. Foreign media also makes the mistake of projecting their electoral system/system of government on the Dutch system. It’s scaremongering that forces people into the mistaken idea that they’d have to vote for the second-most likely to get a majority in order to keep Wilders out of the government.
But do we really want Rutte III? My personal opinion on Rutte aside, the VVD can neither be trusted to keep their word, nor to un-fuck the things they fucked up over the course of Rutte I & II. Plus, the VVD said they wouldn’t form a coalition with Wilders and the PVV before, and guess what happened back then.
If you want to keep Wilders out of the government, the only way you’re going to accomplish that is by going out and vote on your preferable party, whether that’s GroenLinks, SP, Christenunie, what have you.
And then we need to start taking shit that worries or scares people - even perhaps without reason! - seriously and give them actual answers instead of empty political bullshit. Because the current political climate is as much a result of the other parties being dismissive as it is of Wilders’ populistic drivel.

Vasthouden of loslaten.
