an alter who enacts internal harm to other alters in their system, but does so with intent to help them in one way or another.

they are much different from misguided protectors in that they view their work as caring for the others, not necessarily protecting them, and that they are fully aware of their actions being objectively wrong. their harm is often intentional and methodical, taking the time to achieve positive outcomes through their unconventional means. these alters may be designated specifically for someone in their system, but not always.

most often, paradoxical caretakers are necessary when another alter is so fully entrenched in their own traumas and patterns/trauma responses that they can only be helped by engaging those traumas in a controlled environment and breaking them down or soothing them from the inside. this can also apply to subsystems, clusters of alters, or the entire system— though, typically, the larger the group, the slower the results.

paradoxical caretakers may view themselves as a type of persecutor, but that depends on the individual, and can be used as a standalone term or a subtype.
