Legs was the perfect soldier, who did what he was told and was praised for it.

Apo, in contrast, is very much an awful soldier. She’s genuinely extremely good-hearted, no matter how hard her circumstances try to push her in the other direction.

Legs massacred a town.

Apo is the only survivor of a massacre.

Despite their gap in age, they’ve both seen those same horrible things. and this influences how they interact with other characters—including the fact that they are the only two people completely able to see through Scott’s bullshit and understand how badly he sucks.

Apo is haunted, just like Legs, and yet she’s only 21.

Apo would admire Legs for choosing to do good after the blood and death of his past, and Legs would admire Apo for never truly losing her goodness, even in horrible circumstances

Legs represents redemption, and Apo represents hope.

Also, on a different note—

They are one dangerous duo. With Legs’ eye for strategy and leadership, and Apo’s ridiculous ability to survive and even have an impact when all odds are stacked against each other…that’s just a fun thought.

Legs who is dangerous but desperately tries not to be, who’s danger is a stain on his past and his future is supposed to be far away from

Apo who is dangerous not because they are a soldier, not because they are a vampire, but simply because they are Apo and they have always been dangerous.

Consider: Legs being fascinated by how be so good and yet so clearly capable of harm. Legs who has tried filing off every part of himself that could be a threat, meeting someone kind and yet sharp-edged.

onto some canon moments

Legs and Apo, extremely unfortunately, do not have all that many canon moments. The closest thing they have to a one-on-one conversation happens in episode 1.

But. Oh boy.

Even the little we do have is good.

Legs tells her that he served two tours right from the beginning. When Martyn reacts aggressively to Apo snatching his book, Legs defuses the situation and steps in front of her protectively. Apo then goes on to say that she really didn’t expect that to happen, and Legs calms her down.

(Notably, later in the third or second episode, Apo steps in front of Avid when Cleo goes after him. These two moments could have zero connection…or Apo could be emulating him)

In the early episodes, the two accompany Abolish and Pyro on an expedition outside of town. They have a couple adorable moments, including Legs’s immediate affection for Truffle and him commenting on how much Apo likes rocks and buildings. …He also does not particularly react to Apo declaring a pig a false prophet and eating the meat raw, only refusing to eat raw meat himself. And considering he’s vegetarian, that’s…a really really tame reaction. Clearly Apo occasionally being Weird And Offputting does not frighten him. Good.

They also have their famous 10:1 moment, where they remark on how crazy everyone else seems to be.

…Now that I think on it, this moment really reinforces my observation that Apo and Legs have the exact same rather dark sense of humor, considering….the “eating raw meat” moment lmao

And they really do, even to the point of both of them having other people react badly to their jokes. Legs does kinda stop having this happen in later moments, but I’m pretty sure that’s because he stops joking as much do to the Everything.

Anyway.

Apo’s probably the reason Legs stayed human as long as he did. Just full stop. Cleo originally wanted to turn him, but Apo yelling at them about it actually seemed to work, and informed the Legs and Cleo friendship that would end up with The Plan. (So thanks Apo, this was one of about five different things you did that created the ending that we got. Miss Militia? Naw, more like Miss Butterfly Effect)

the tower expedition. Apo, Cleo and Legs head off, and the expedition is mostly full of Apo & Cleo’s early dynamic of fighting frequently but still caring. (Sidenote, I miss that dynamic so so so much. Cleo why…) We also have the absolutely devastating “she’s okay, doc” moment where Legs realizes Apo is a vampire.

When Martyn reveals Apo’s vampirism to everyone, Legs puts himself in front of her (again!!!!) and tries to calm the townsfolk down. Apo, however, mentions the possibility of a human working with the vampires in a way that felt targeted. (I actually didn’t pick up on this one, someone else did, so idk take it with a grain of salt, because it could be Apo throwing him under the bus but it very likely might also be Apo “-3 charisma” Kuna being herself)

When Apo proposes her plan of being a double agent, Legs not only asks her if she’s sure but is the Only person to do so.

later, and by later I mean episode 7, 10:1 is brought back by Apo, who’s trying to reach back out to the humans. Legs responds with “not anymore” and. Oughhh. Yeah that one hurt thanks guys

Later, Legs just fully yells at her, saying that he doesn’t think she’s evil but that he cannot trust her. It’s really darkly funny that Legs is still one of the people who treated Apo best.

Despite this, Apo and Legs have no further conflict on episode 7, instead she near seamlessly blends back into the group dynamic.

onto the finale.

Legs and Apo don’t get many interactions in the finale, which means he misses the Apo & Cleo horrible arguments for better or worse.

but if you think we were devoid of moments you would be wrong

the rooftop moment. Oh the rooftop moment. A stage 3 Legs, clearly distressed and out of it, stands on the rooftop while Pearl misunderstands what’s been done to him.

Apo gets the closest out of anyone. She was the first to spot him, and even at her most ruthless she holds no stake. The thing in her hand is a bottle of blood, and her first instinct is to try and haltingly ask him if he’s alright.

Pearl continues to assume that he asked for vampirism, and Apo says nothing but it is clear she understands. Apo understands him more than anyone in this moment, as the humans try to gauge his loyalty and Apo just stares, that bottle in hand.

And it is Apo who is given the last bottle of holy water that the Doctor will ever create.

Later, when Apo and Abolish spot Cleo, Pearl, and a stage 3 (and vampire) Doc, Abolish is originally shocked at the sight of him (understandably so)

Apo, meanwhile, like the darling they are…

Their first reaction is just and I quote “Friends!” And the exclamation point is necessary.

Also. Apo literally tells Legs that his stage 3 form is alright in her books, even after Cleo comments on his attractiveness.

Yeah she literally canonically comments positively on his appearance and that was somehow not the first thing I mentioned.

(probably because I don’t think it was in Apo’s pov, I just heard about it but it’s important so I’m mentioning it)

Apo agrees to The Plan because what other option does she have, but a lot of Apo’s thoughts can be judged by body language, and grief is written all over her. I am also absolutely confident that the reason Apo rejects all memories of Oakhurst at the very end of episode 8 is because she lost the only friends she made there.

I don’t ship them romantically but I loved their interactions in ep7 and ep8. Can see them being extremely weird about each other, especially after Legs turned Abolish.

legs being the only person abolish lets his guard down around just for him to fucking DIE,, ough

1.) abolish is the reason why the relationship is weird. legundo is trying to avoid being any amount of creepy or odd towards abolish while abolish is saying "you should punch me again." with a completely blank expression 2.) age gap yaoi. legundo looking in the mirror at himself like "am i weird? im dating someone half my age" while abolish is smiling and giggling alone in his room thinking about making out with that old man. legundo feeling nuclear amounts of guilt about everything FOREVER 3.) TOXIC YAOI. they respect each others skills and intelligence while also completely disagreeing about fundamental aspects of their ideology. theyre the only people they would ever be remotely vulnerable around but also the last people they would want to seem weak towards for fear of it being used against them, for fear of being judged by each other. first base is using each other to destroy yourselves, fifteenth base is having an actual conversation abolish needs to save legundo from owen. get him OUT of that terrible toxic relationship. veylocke the fuck in abolish GET LEGUNDO OUT OF THERE 4.) legundo is one of the people abolish cares about and trusts the most out of literally anyone in oakhurst, and vice versa. they are some of the only competent mfs there and they work together incredibly well 5.) do you think abolish felt it when legundo died. do you think he understood how legundo felt in his final moments. do you think he felt the sun on legundos skin before the closest person to him was gone forever. do you think he, even for a moment, wished hed focused on something other than his work just once so maybe, just maybe, legundo wouldve made it out alive. do you think he cried for the first time in years. do you think that even after being cured, he still feels like a piece of him is forever missing?

Something something even ground something something letting the other take the lead. There's a mirror of a past self one way and a rare person worth keeping in the loop the other way. They're both soldiers and both capable of so much violence. It's entirely neutral to one and the worst thing to the other. They both prefer peace all the same.

All good ships are involve both of them disliking the military The fuck up soldier x the model soldier is a great combo United by gallows humour, guilt, occasional silliness and the want to kill Scott Goldsmith, what else could you want?

Legs the model soldier, the one who got a medal for his crimes. Apo the fuck up, who’s scared of blood and so unsuited for this. They both got drafted. They care so much about others, and that care gets systematically chewed up and spat on. They both hate Scott Goldsmith. They were both wronged by Owen. They are both genuinely dangerous people. Legs was the first human to know about Apo’s vampirism. They were the only vampires loyal to Oakhurst in the end. They’ll both go out on their own terms. Legs was willing to give up everything he had and so was Apo but Apo had a line they wouldn’t cross. 10:1. 10:1. 10.1. They never had a one-on-one conversation. They killed a guy together and thought they’d done it permanently. They refused to take the credit for his final death. They both have a distaste for violence, but are willing to commute it when necessary. Neither of them became the monster others thought or wanted them to be: Owen couldn’t make Legs a weapon. Apo chose mercy even at her worst.
