If you want to fix the world's problems, you need to address both. Punishing people for bad choices doesn't erase the circumstances that led to them making those choices in the first place— that's why Yaldobaoth is wrong. Warping circumstances to the extent that you take away people's agency to even make choices— that's why Maruki is wrong.

Those are the two main antagonists, and it's no coincidence that Akechi is central to both of their plans. Focusing on one concept while ignoring the other creates a neverending prison where nothing actually gets better. The middle ground —reconciling circumstances and choices as intertwined— is a necessary step to actually fixing things.

Everything comes back to this. Consider Mishima, who never managed to make the right choices until he was safe from Kamoshida's abuse. Or Sumire, who never managed to heal because Maruki took away her agency. Who would blame them for that?

Every single day I see someone go "but I can't possibly think or act in misogynistic ways, I literally am/was a woman!" and it's the dumbest shit I've seen, every single time. You, yes you, the person reading this, are capable of misogyny, just like you're capable of every other kind of bigotry, just like every single person on earth is.

Ren's wish to have Akechi back was never spoken out loud to ANYONE. It's a very intimate wish, that no one around him would be able to understand, or that could hurt the ones he cares about. Like I said before, I just know Ren is even shameful about it since it's about missing and caring so deeply his friends' parents' murderer. It's his only selfish wish, as someone who is so giving to everyone else.

That wish must have been buried so deep down, shamefully, perhaps barely even consciously. And Maruki just guts it out and bares it to the world so balantly — Dare I say cruelly, even ?
