Annaliese and The Baby Sitter Pt2
The diner had been loud and bright and full of the kind of easy noise that made Annaliese almost forget the night before. They had crowded into a corner booth, ordered too many waffles and shared plates of hash browns, and talked over each other about summer plans and who was leaving for college first. By the time they paid the check and piled into Mia’s car for the short drive to the mall, she felt almost normal again.
The food court was already busy when they arrived. Sophia wanted new shoes. Jordan needed a phone case. Leah was determined to try on every summer dress in the first store they passed. Annaliese trailed behind them, smiling at the right moments, but the familiar low pressure had begun to build again somewhere between the parking garage and the escalator. She would find a bathroom the second they slowed down.
Sophia linked her arm through Annaliese’s and tugged her toward the big open atrium near the center of the mall. “Come on, Sephora is supposed to have free samples. I want that highlighter everyone’s posting about.”
Annaliese nodded, trying to keep her steps even. The pressure grew heavier with every minute. She clenched hard, shifted her weight from one foot to the other while Sophia held up different lip glosses, and forced herself to laugh when Jordan made a face at a particularly glittery eyeshadow. The bathroom signs were visible across the atrium, but every time she started to excuse herself, someone pulled her into another conversation or another store entrance.
One second she was standing still, nodding at something Leah said about a sale. The next second the dam simply broke. There was no gentle warning, hot, uncontrollable warmth rushed down the front of her jeans in a long, helpless stream. The denim darkened instantly, a spreading stain that soaked through the fabric and began to drip onto the polished floor between her sneakers.
She froze, eyes wide, hands hovering uselessly at her sides. The wet heat spread down her inner thighs and kept going. A small puddle formed at her feet.
Sophia turned first. Her gaze dropped, then widened. For half a second she looked startled. Then a sharp, delighted laugh burst out of her.
“Oh my god. Annaliese. Did you just?” She clapped a hand over her mouth, but the laughter kept coming. “You actually peed yourself. In the middle of the mall. Are you serious right now?”
Jordan’s mouth fell open. Leah took an automatic step back, eyes flicking from the spreading stain to Annaliese’s face.
Annaliese’s cheeks burned so hot she felt dizzy. She couldn’t move. The last of it was still leaking out in weak pulses, darkening the lower half of her jeans even further. People nearby were starting to glance over.
Sophia was still laughing, though now it had an edge of pure teasing. “I can’t believe this. Miss Perfect just wet her pants like a little kid. Should we go find you some pull-ups or something?”
“Sophia, stop.” Mia’s voice cut through sharply. She had been a step behind and now moved fast, stepping between Sophia and Annaliese. Her expression was tight with anger. “That’s enough. It’s not funny.”
Sophia rolled her eyes, still grinning. “Come on, it’s a little funny. She pissed herself"
“I said stop.” Mia’s tone left no room. She turned to Annaliese, voice dropping, gentler but urgent. “Hey. Look at me. We’re going to the bathroom. Right now.”
She didn’t wait for an answer. Mia took Annaliese’s wrist firmly and pulled her toward the nearest restroom corridor, ignoring the stares and the soft sound of wet sneakers on the tile. Sophia called something after them another teasing remark but Mia didn’t look back.
Inside the large, fluorescent-lit bathroom, Mia guided Annaliese into the biggest accessible stall. The second the door closed behind them, Annaliese’s composure cracked. Her hands were shaking. Tears welled up hot and fast.
“I.....I’m sorry,” she whispered, voice breaking. “I tried. I really tried. It just....”
“Hey. No.” Mia’s voice stayed calm and steady. She was already pulling paper towels from the dispenser in thick handfuls. “You don’t apologize for this. Not to me."
Annaliese sank onto the toilet lid, jeans heavy and cold and clinging. Mia crouched in front of her without hesitation, working quickly and carefully. She helped ease the soaked denim down, used the paper towels to clean what she could, and didn’t flinch at any of it. When she spoke again her voice was quiet, only for the two of them.
“I’ve known you a long time. You don’t have to explain anything right now if you don’t want to. But you’re okay. We’re going to get you cleaned up, and then we’re going to walk out of here like nothing happened. Sophia can deal with me later, besides I have a younger sister I'm used to this.”
Annaliese swallowed hard, staring at the floor. The humiliation sat heavy in her chest, but Mia’s steady presence kept it from swallowing her completely. Outside the stall they could still hear the muffled mall noise and, faintly, Sophia’s voice talking to the others. Mia ignored it.
“I have an extra pair of leggings in my bag in the car,” Mia said after a minute. “I’ll go get them. You stay here. Lock the stall. I’ll be right back.”
She met Annaliese’s eyes and waited until she got a small nod. Then she slipped out, leaving Annaliese alone with the sound of her own uneven breathing and the cold, wet weight of what had just happened in the middle of the mall.
