No more Machete Order, no more post-ironic prequel appreciation; if a Star Wars movie isn't trying to make you care about a Macguffin, then it's failed its mission statement.
A New Hope: Macguffin: R2D2/Death Star Plans. Care?: Yes
The Empire Strikes Back: Macguffin: Daddy Issues. Care?: Yes
Return Of The Jedi: Macguffin: Han Solo in Carbonite. Care?: Yes
The Phantom Menace: Macguffin: Midichlorians. Care?: Sure
Attack Of The Clones: Macguffin: Jango Fett. Care? Hell yeah
Revenge Of The Sith: Macguffin: Anakin's Soul. Care? Never have I been so stressed out in my life
The Force Awakens: Macguffin: Luke's lightsaber: Care: Barely.
*Kylo Ren also has his own Macguffin, which is Darth Vader's helmet. This would work better if Kylo Ren gave a fuck about Luke's lightsaber to show him being torn between light and dark, but we're ALSO supposed to care about BB-8, and that's too many things
Rogue One: Macguffin: Death Star Plans. Care?: Yes
Whatever Episode 8 Was Called: Macguffin: I want to say Porgs? Or casino planet?*. Care: Clearly not
*Movie rightfully calls out previous movie for giving us no reason to care about Luke's lightsaber, yet gives us no new Macguffin to care about
The Rise Of Skywalker: Macguffin: That weird knife-map that leads to the remains of The Death Star. Care: No
Andor makes me want to write a Star Wars fanfiction but it's so scary. What if I write "Glup Shitto was sitting on the balcony, drinking coffee and reading his favourite book", but someone comments "didn't you mean he was drinking glop-goppy and reading a holo-journal? 🤨" so I open wookiepedia to check it out and it turns out that they also never invented balconies in the star wars universe and Glup Shitto can't read because of the freak accident he suffered in the episode 10 of the 2024 show "Jar-Jar and Babu Frik". What then.
In your defense: Andor uses real-life languages and swear words rather than calling everyone "sleemo" all the time, and the droids call people "humans" instead of "organics"- this may be the first on-screen acknowledgement that the humanoids in star wars are *actually* humans and has huge implications for weird nerds who care deeply about this stuff (not me, I'm normal about it). Andor is like resting a star wars fanfic where someone never learned any of the slang words, and it still slaps.
came home drunk last night and got way too excited to see my cat
everyone look at these namaki drawings that my friend @lakefama drew i’m crying
"I am haunted... By the kiss... You should never have given me." - Anakin Skywalker
Here’s a thing that happened to one of my friends. I was there.
Basically, we were walking down the sidewalk, talking about something meaningless. I think it had to do with The Dark Side. Then this space shuttle screeches up, stops next to us, and a bunch of people with “Down with Sith" shirts climbed out and started beating him up. I was punched and kicked a bit too, but I managed to avoid brutalization by going for their faces. After figuring out what’s happening, I started attacking them back, getting them off of him. He was quite injured but I called the senate and he made a full recovery in a bacta tank. I was fine, with only a lightsaber cut on my arm that they patched up.

Mark Hamill - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
ladies and gentlemen. this is blorbo number five.
a little bit of castiel in my life
A little bit of fanfic by my side
A little bit of Doctor up in space
A little bit of presidential stolen lace
A little bit of Samwell in the sun
Darth Vader was Luke's father all along
they do look scarily similar 😱
The prequels casting director (Robin Gurland) did a fantastic job with every character, to the point that no one knew Kiera Knightley was in The Phantom Menace, despite the fact that she's one of the largest faces on the poster.
i think its very interesting that the general consensus on the star wars OT is that its a morally simplistic good guys vs bad guys story (in contrast w some other star wars media) but also no-one seems to agree on like. what its ultimate moral message actually is.
I would say that someone should just ask George Lucas, but there’s an oddly large number of fans who think he knows nothing about the story he created.
see idk if that would help as he might not have a definitive answer in mind and even if he does, his answer would not necessarily be correct
Found one!
oh no to be clear, i don't mean george lucas specifically doesn't know anything about his own creation, i mean that authors in general are not necessarily able to give a 100% correct answer to the question of what the message of their work is!
It’s art, it’s supposed to be suggestive! His idea of a perfect answer, even as the creator, just might not align with what other people took away from the media, and that’s the beautiful thing about art. The discussion about the art is just as important as the art itself.
^ yea you get me!
We already know that Lucas' opinion (“It's like poetry, it rhymes”) hinges on the messages of the OT and prequel trilogy reinforcing one another.
Which is why it's very easy to say ‘well, obviously, George thinks the origtrig is about [...]’ but any conclusions rely on the existence of the sequel trilogy.
Lovely! I haven't seen this one before

scars
Absolutely losing it all over again that Luke sent Grogu back to Tatooine all by himself, like the minute Grogu said he wanted to be with Din instead, Luke put him on that X-Wing and was like, “Fuck no, I’m not going back to that armpit of the galaxy.” He doesn’t even have any other students or anything else to do but meditate! Grogu was the only student! Ahsoka was leaving again! The droids were building the school! It’s his X-Wing that took Grogu there! Luke Skywalker had fuck all to do and was still like “The baby can go back to Tatooine by himself, I’m not getting sand in my new boots, bye kiddo.” What an icon.
"The baby is 50+ years old, I'm technically half his age... I think he can survive an x-wing trip by himself."
CHRIST FUCKING ALIVE THIS HURTS MY HEART. This is immediately after Bespin, while Leia, Lando, and Chewbacca argue about what to do next, because they lost their chance to go after Han because they had to save Luke, who has just found out that Vader is his father and has just had his hand cut off, and he’s not even part of the discussion, he’s just sitting there. Lifeless. He slowly stirs out of it, wondering where Han is, and even when Leia is so gentle with him, he can’t stop having flashbacks to Vader cutting his hand off and being confused and lost and scared. This hurts my heart for him so much because he was not ready for any of this. Not only does Mark Hamill compare his reaction to what Vader’s saying as being akin to commiting suicide, but he can’t even tell anyone what he learned about Vader being his father, it’s upended his entire world and he can’t even tell Leia or Chewbacca or Han because they’ve all got their shit going on, because Han is in carbonite, because Leia is running a rebellion, because it’s Vader and he can’t bear that they might look at him differently. And it just hurts my heart for Luke Skywalker, I love him and he doesn’t deserve this pain, even if I know he can rise above it. MY HEART HURTS ABOUT LUKE SKYWALKER AGAIN, AS ALWAYS.
