Casting discourse
tldr: Iโm happy for a diverse cast, sad about body diversity, curious about how this changes the story (skeptical that it will be done well but pro-trusting-the-process), and I donโt want anyone to be mean to the actors. And donโt be fucking racist.
I think we all have the capacity to feel multiple things at once. We can be happy for the actor playing Harris and excited for a more racially diverse and queer cast, while also disappointed in the lack of body diversity and skeptical of the added complications a racial minority would face in Harrisโs (and Troyโs) story. I think we can appreciate what the show has done AND be apprehensive about this casting. If they are serious about fleshing out a race narrative in Troy/Harris, there are so many talented Black actors with Harrisโs body type.
Iโm hearing (on Thre*ds lol Tumblr seems to be fine) โIt never says Harris is fat in the books!โ Ok, it never explicitly says Shane is autistic in the books, but we pieced together context clues and weโre all pretty happy about that representation, right? Itโs good when the text is set up to give us a minority/marginalized character and we take the opportunity. It was set up to give us a fat character easily. Try to understand that there are a lot of people who feel like this was an intentional slight.
As for the racial complexities this adds, if the show does its job, weโll see that added complexity played out. But there are only so many episodes, and the fans also really want Ilya/Shane as the focus. So I just donโt see this storyline getting the time it needs. It would be cool if Troy fell in love with someone his racist father (and potentially past-him) hates (even though he already hates him for the gay thing), and thatโs an interesting story and I would want to see how non-white Harris handles falling in love with a reformed(?) bigot (Iโm personally hoping the show does a better job of this than the books anyway, maybe this is part of a plan to do that). Before you say โBut Adrian Dela Cruz is Hispanic, Troy already had an interracial relationship!โ I want to tell you Adrian definitely voted for Donald Trump twice (heโs Canadian but idc, thatโs his vibe). Heโs an asshole, he didnโt care that Troy was an asshole too.
Also: Troy liked Adrian because he was hot. It kind of changes things that Harris is also conventionally attractive, and Troy doesnโt have to get over that kind of superficiality in the show.
Ok, so then thereโs the reason I felt I needed to make this post, and thatโs the blatant racism I just saw pop up on threads, that a Black family would not have an apple farm in Canada (and Iโm sure itโs just the first of a lot). So I have to say: thereโs nothing inherent in Harrisโs character that makes him unable to be Black. You donโt have to be white to have an apple farm, heart issues (please god please JT keep that), relationships with men, nerdy buttons on your denim jackets, love for dogs, a social media job, a bad skunk-in-trunk first date story, cringey stuffed animals... You also donโt have to be white to instantly forgive a former asshole because heโs hot and interested in you. It probably makes it harder idk, but if white Harris was allowed to do it, Black Harris should be, too. If you have a problem with Harrisโs casting because โHarris canโt be Blackโ, I have bad news for you.
All of this said, I feel for this actor. He is going to get so much hate from every side, and I really really hope thereโs enough positive support and this season is good enough for his career to make it worth it. We can discourse about the casting decision, but I need us all to promise to shut it down if we see people being shitty to him as a person.
