Obsession spoilers and discussion of csa:

I feel like the other Nikki being portrayed as childlike really adds to the disgust over Bear clearly taking advantage of her. In my own experience as a kid being groomed and abused, it’s very familiar. I love this person. This person means everything. This person seems happiest when they use my body in ways I don’t want or even understand. But they give me attention. I need their attention to survive.

And then add to it the scene of Nikki peeing herself (a common symptom of child abuse), also her acting out and being inappropriate in public (another symptom) and being clingy and scared, desperate for attention because she feels worthless outside what she can give to Bear.

And the way Bear talks to her absolutely feeds into that dynamic as well. He never asks how she’s feeling or if she’s ok. He constantly chastises her and criticizes her behavior and gets mad that she embarrassed him in front of their friends.

Even the Hansel and Gretel story, while obviously referencing real Nikki’s thinking of Bear as a brother, also kind of feeds into it. It’s very childlike of her to use a fairytale to try to explain her feelings.

You know as an American born in the late 90s I’ve watched my country blow up foreigners on tv supposedly in the interest of national security since I was a toddler but quite frankly we live on a natural fortress of a continent with friendly nations to our north and south and have been attacked on our own soil literally two times in the past hundred years and we have military bases on every inhabited continent on earth. audism is the fact that in the US cops are only legally obligated to provide an interpreter after a Deaf person is detained. this results in many Deaf people being murdered by the state for not understanding instructions at things as simple as traffic stops.

many cops make no effort to use alternative communication with Deaf people even after we have identified ourselves as Deaf.

audism is also the fact that our signing is considered threatening and something that warrants murder. audism is the fact that our signing is labeled as gang signs and is used to justify murdering us. (and, for the record, actual gang signs also don't justify murder)

audism is the way Deaf people are accused of lying to "get out of things" when we identify ourselves as Deaf.... which is then used to deny us accommodations like interpreters or written communication.

audism is the fact that multiple Deaf people (mostly unhoused) have been murdered in my city alone in the last 5 years under the premises of "refusing to follow instructions" and "threatening hand gestures" and "gang signs." audism is the fact that Deaf people (and especially multiply marginalized Deaf people such as Black Deaf people) disproportionately experience police brutality even when it isn't lethal.

I get that a lot of people are like "bear is the villain and the real nikki is miserable and begging for death" (correct), but one thing I haven't seen is that. The entity possessing nikki isn't happy either!! And not just because Bear doesn't love her--she's upset almost all the time. She's confused and out of her depth in the real world because she's not human and doesn't know how to be normal. She's upset that she can't be normal or "be nikki" or love bear like he wants even though she's JUST doing what the willow wish stick "programmed" her to do. The entity possessing nikki is ALSO a victim and like lowkey I'm kind of compelled by The Entity as a character

I think I need to express to y'all just how scary Obsession is. There are few horror films that have truly scared, not even all of my all time favourite horror films have rattled me. The horror movies of last year that I saw in the cinema, Sinners, Weapons, The Long Walk, 28 Years Later, are all great movies that I really enjoyed. They kept me on edge and even really unsettled me, but none of them really struck terror into heart.

Obsession struck terror into my heart. It grabbed me by the throat and refused to let go 'til credits roll. The atmosphere is thick with intense dread that leaves you unsettled and uncomfortable the moment the One Wish Willow is broken.

But of course the real reason this film rattled me so much is Inde Navarette. God she's so absolutely incredible, giving what may be one of the best female performances in a horror movie. Her unpredictability and sheer intensity makes her a terrifying force to reckoned with. The way she sometimes moves like a stop motion character adds to the unsettling nature of her. The moments where the real Nikki is able to break out just makes the whole thing all the more horrifying. There are so many intensly scary scenes but I think the standout is the bedroom scene, it haunts me so much. Inde better get all the awards recognition, the whole movie should but her in particular because she puts her all and then some into this. Absolutely phenomenal performance in an absolutely incredible film.

In truth the real scariest part of the film was everything that Bear did. Fucking bastard, fuck him

I really do think Entity! Nikki is a childish existence and on top of it I think that's why it feels so bad to see her becoming traumatized from being with Bear when his wish ripped out parts of her that made it impossible to love him. Not! Nikki exists as sparknotes of her former self with the missing pieces filled in by Bear's own personality and habits, but she's still being traumatized because fundamentally Nikki and Bear's relationship is defined by her saying no and him not caring. It why I see the ending scenes of the movie as really nauseating because Not! Nikki is this new being without life experiences gauging her personality and behavior off of Bear's reaction and she starts to associate her genitals with violence. Entity Nikki is crying in the corner and starts to force herself to sleep at night and give Nikki full control because before that scene E! Nikki has the real Nikki's nightmare about how Bear raped her. It makes me feel sick since she's like a child that can't comprehend what's happening or why this is all hurting, and why she feels terrified by someone she loves. She doesn't understand why she feels so violated when one of the scenes with her and Bear is her assuring him he didn't violate her cause that's what Bear wants her to be telling him

His name being Bear. Her seeing him as a brother, and then the Hansel and Gretel story. Him not wanting to cancel the wish when he thought he could, just alter it. The soundtrack. The sunshine necklace and "Nikki would hate that" and then she stops leaving his house during the day. Everytime she freaks out after coming back into her own body. Him not caring. Fake Nikki making things up. "Is being with me so bad?" I love this movie so much Curry Barker you are a genius.

one of the things i admire most about obsession is the deliberate denial of any kind of optimistic ending, as well as the method by which that is executed. i’m thinking, specifically, of how the musical cues are utilized to pull multiple bait-and-switches on the audience: the way the music swells when bear is explaining the wish to ian and asking for his help; when bear puts the gun in his mouth; and when he takes the oxycodone.

obviously, if ian wishes away bear’s initial wish, that’s a happy ending! if bear dies in the bathroom and we cut to black, the audience can hold onto the hope that the wish breaking allows nikki to go back to her life before!

but those endings, especially the latter, would be dishonest. i appreciate that the film makes us sit in nikki’s anguish instead, bc i appreciate that it understands that she was equally affected by this, if not more so! an ending that bleak is honest to the concept and to the consequences inherent to the concept and i think it shows a great deal of respect for nikki. it’s an acknowledgement that nikki experienced something deeply violating and now has to somehow learn how to cope with it.

LOVEEEE wish!nikki being faceless. her face being backlit or her entire body being shadowed in darkness. wearing clothes that are completely removed from her style before the wish. having a higher pitched voice than she did before. not being able to smile the same. it’s not just that nikki’s face hidden in shadow, everything that made her HER has also been covered up with something else. wish!nikki doesn’t have a face of her own, she just has what bear wants projected onto her.

the thing is bear doesn’t even really know nikki. they’ve been “friends” for a long time but he barely even listens to her, he didn’t even question her concern for her dad’s cancer when Ian and Sarah both immediately poked holes in not!Nikki’s story. all the shots of Nikki obscured in darkness showing not only is she Not there but also she’s never been there, bear has never seen her. only the silhouette of her life on his. and if the one wish willow could puppeteer her husk more seamlessly, he’d be satisfied with the shell of her…
