My grandma just called and, among other things, said “You have hips. That’s good! Men like hips!” and then she interrupted herself to say “Women like hips. People of your preferred gender like hips. I can never remember”  And I was like “Thanks grandma! My preferred gender is none of them, no thanks.” and she was like “Okay, no one will comment on your hips!” very self satisfied, like “aha, I have figured it out” I think like half her grandkids are some variety of not-straight and she can’t always remember which is which but she is the epitome of like “she’s a little confused, but she’s got the spirit!”

Update: I gave it some thought and my estimate was wrong. Of the grandkids that are out, it’s 1/3, not ½

only took a month for a stranger to ask if my ada parking placard was really mine 👍 he was very polite about it at least but mildly unfriendly reminder that the best practice here is to not fucking ask. thanks!!!

tbh there’s only one circumstance i’d say it’s acceptable to approach someone about them using an ada parking space, and that’s if you’re non-ambulatory and need access to a ramp. even then the right question here is “can i use this space for the ramp?” not “are you actually disabled and can you prove it?”

sorry i’m still pissed but i need all able-bodied people and anyone disabled who feels inclined to interrogate strangers about their health status to realize that 1) ambulatory young people can be disabled, 2) yes some assholes will probably illegally use a placard that’s not theirs, but you shouldn’t risk penalizing a real disabled person. i am prepared to make this an uncomfortable moment for you but i’d rather just pick up my fucking coffee! thanks again
