love characters who are like "this is how the world works. this is how it has to be (because if i'm wrong i have to face what i've done // if i'm wrong i have to face whats been done to me) "
This trait is much more endearing in fiction than in my mother.
my favorite part of this whole thing tbh

laptop overheating?? pour water on it to cool it down!
i trusted you
Do not trust people like me. I will take you to museums, and parks, and monuments, and kiss you in every beautiful place, so that you can never go back to them without tasting me like blood in your mouth. I will destroy you in the most beautiful way possible. And when I leave you will finally understand, why storms are named after people
THE ORIGINAL?!?!?!?!?!
oh shit we got december tomorrowâŚ
you're lying
WE GOT DECEMBER TOMORROW
bad news. some of us are already in december
The goat is assembled!!!
after a lifetime of hearing about aragorn but not reading the books or watching the movies, genuinely nothing could have prepared me for his actual introduction. the hobbits picked this man out of a dumpster. he is a textbook softspoken angst prince and he is covered in dirt and he probably smells so bad. heâs the coolest man alive and is so casual about it. his number one skill is Knowing Where They Are and his number two skill is Having A Horrible Destiny That Torments Him. tolkien got it in one iâm afraid aragorn son of arathorn you are the guy of all time
And then the movies went and understood the assignment by casting Viggo Mortensen.
Described by legendary fight choreographer and Olympic fencer Bob Anderson as âthe best swordsman Iâve ever trainedâ, and insisted on using a real steel sword to get the movement right. Actually bonded with the horses he rode and worked with over the course of filming. Was noted by cast members as being the natural leader of the actors when they were together. Went hiking and fishing in full costume for the sake of authenticity, even repairing damage to the costumes himself to better convey the life of a self-reliant ranger. Actually learned Sindarin, and speaks it more frequently in the films than any other character including the elves. Is an actual polyglot, speaking four languages fluently and having a passing knowledge of six more. Personally composed and performed music for the soundtrack.
They needed someone to play the guy of all time, and they actually GOT the guy of all time.
Didn't just bond with the horses, he bought the horse that played Brego after the movie. (He also bought the horse that Arwen's stunt double rode for her.)
During the fight with the orcs at the end of Fellowship, one of the orcs is meant to throw a knife at Aragorn. There was a mix-up with the props and the orc actor threw an actual knife instead of the blunt prop. Mortensen casually managed to block it with his sword anyway.
As well as hand-repairing his costume, he also was the one who suggested Aragorn have a small bow for hunting, since he lived in the wilderness and would need one. No one else had thought of it.
It was also his suggestion to take Boromir's arm guards and make everyone cry.
He and Peter Jackson once had a whole conversation where Jackson called him 'Aragorn'. Neither of them noticed for about half an hour.
In one of the collectible artbooks (I can't track it down now; there are a LOT of photo & artbooks), he was the only person not photographed touching the ring - he held it on a chain. Everyone else held it up and looked at it.

I appreciate The Empire Strikes Back for being the only time I can think of when a character just shot their enemy as soon as they saw them without pausing or having a dramatic moment beforehand.

every day british actors wake up and think to themselves fuckkkkk i HAVE to help the incredibly bigoted woman make more money so she can funnel it into killing trans people i have to do it bro if i don't do it i will die
In case y'all needed proof that continuing to engage with HP and fucking over trans folks is in fact a CHOICE, Daniel Radcliffe has refused to even have a cameo, despite being repeatedly asked.
For those that don't speak British, this is about as close as he can get to officially, publicly saying, "for FUCK'S sake, get that thing away from me and stop associating me with it, I do not want my name attached to that bigotry."
Daniel consistently redirects the topic away from Jo and toward the Trevor Project, an organization he has been heavily involved with for almost 20 years. He puts his money where his mouth is and uses his platform and his reach to amplify queer voices and queer struggles. He explicitly supports trans people, and is choosing to walk away from a very large and very easy paycheck, because he values trans lives over anything he could get from HP.
Emma and Rupert also won't go near this reboot. Jo has stated the reason she's doing it is BECAUSE the three of them refuse to support her vile hatred.
Every actor who puts their name on this, on any level, deserves to own the choice they're making with their whole chest. If they decide the paycheck is worth being ten toes down on transphobia? They're adults. They chose. And they deserve to be treated accordingly. Actions speak louder than words.
And if you give it a moment of attention or a single penny, you deserve to face the consequences of that choice too.
I know that Peterâs Jackson Lord of the Rings trilogy technically has flaws but alsoâŚ.it doesnât. Itâs perfect.
âAre these magic cloaks?â asked Pippin, looking at them. with wonder.
âI do not know what you mean by that,â answered the leader of the Elves. âThey are fair garments, and the web is good, for it was made in this land. They are Elvish robes certainly, if that is what you mean. Leaf and branch, water and stone: they have the hue and beauty of all these things under the twilight of Lorien that we love; for we put the thought of all that we love into all that we make.â
- Fellowship of the Ring, Chapter 8: Farewell to Lorien
This is how I think of Jacksonâs movies. Yes, there are serious flaws - Gandalfâs de-powering, Gimli as comic relief, and Faramir, namely - but come on.
Remember when the guys making their chain mail invented a new method for quickly producing large amounts of it by hand? Remember Miranda Otto walking down the street, practicing sword positions? The guys who forged all of the swords - for leads and for extras? The men and women riders who volunteered to be riders of Rohan? The costume designers who designed the inside of Theodenâs armor (which no one would ever see) so beautifully that Bernard Hill said he felt like a king? The friendships between the cast, and their size doubles, and the stuntmen?
When they made that movie, they put all that they loved into all that they made.
#just hundreds of people who went âsure let me try thisâ #and they made something breathtaking #and then they made it 12 more times in different sizes ( @byjoveimbeinghumbleâ )
Wait tell me more about that chainmail thing
âKaynemaile has worked tirelessly to perfect the material science behind beautiful architectural mesh, collaborating with architects and designers on projects that embolden urban environments with positive buildings. The companyâs patented polycarbonate mesh, inspired by 2,000-year-old medieval chainmail, was initially created for the armor and weapons seen in the The Lord of The Rings movie trilogy and is now used on major architectural projects around the world.
âThe filmâs art director and Kaynemaileâs founder Kayne Horsham worked with his team to construct each garment from plastic plumbing tubes, coating them in pure silver. Once filming wrapped, Horsham dedicated himself to creating a change to the liquid state assembly process to mass produce the polycarbonate chainmail for architectural applications â products that were light, but strong enough to protect the interior or exterior of a building. Now an industry-leading manufacturer, Kaynemaile produces mesh for everything from small interior screens to large scale exterior façades. Their mesh is easy to install and can be custom created for specialized applications.â

Kaynemaile's patented mesh façade systems are incredibly lightweight and easy to install while bringing a bold look to any scale building.
YOU GUYS
they took forced perspective and scaled sets to a new level by adding moving set pieces to create the illusion that the hobbits and dwarves were much smaller than everyone else even when the camera moved.
every scene you see in the 11+ hours of glory that is the LOTR masterpiece is most like ridiculously elaborate or expensiveâfrom model towers to the all-new motion capture technology used for gollum to the costumes and sets to the aerial on location shots of mother-fracking new zealand and the big impressive battle scenes and horse charges.
but then the story and the screenplay tooâthere is just SO much lore that is there in the background lurking if you want to look for it, yet it still remains simplified for the average viewer. Crazy impressive feat.
And the acting is heartfelt and real and makes you love the characters.
ALSO DONâT GET ME STARTED ON FREAKING HOWARD SHORE AND HIS 100+ HEARTSHATTERINGLY BEAUTIFUL LIETMOTIFS AND BRILLIANT SUBTLE VARIATIONS IN THE FLIPPING 13 HOUR SOUNDTRACK. AND ENYA SINGING IN REAL ELVISH.
Thereâs so much detail in the costuming that we canât even see, itâs wild. One of my favourite things I saw on a tour of the WETA collection was seeing a Gondorian sword and on the pommel of the grip, there were concentric rings with a triangle wedge raised about them. They had a representation of frigging Minas Tirith as a part of the sword.
Also, here are a few close-up costume/prop details from the costumes they had on display in the shop and at sites around Wellington:
Even the weapons for the extra were perfect. What does it matter if a weapon thatâs going to be on screen for .2 of a second isnât perfect? Well it mattered to Weta.
Source: My old work-mateâs fiance worked for Weta making weapons and she would occasionally âmess upâ one so it would go in the discard pile and she could take it home for him. He bought a sword to work to show us and none of us could figure out why that was a reject, it was beautiful.
One of my favourite stories is that Billy Boyd had the idea on set for Pippin to swap a jug for the Palantir while Gandalf slept and Peter Jackson was like âthatâs a great idea but we donât have that jug in two scales.â
And the crew responded with âuhâŚyeah we do actually. We made everything with both scales to make the force perspective work just in caseâ
Which really shows how much everyone was dedicated to those movies
