sometimes I think about Conan O'Brien meeting his wife on that episode he was taping for his show.
I do not believe this darkness will endure.

ÉOWYN & FARAMIR - THE LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING (2003)
did you know that a short and loving life ain't so bad
What's your musical? Your personal musical. Mine's Bonnie & Clyde.
I know I’m always talking about teaching David Copperfield but I wanna talk about teaching David Copperfield. I can’t really explain it but it’s like opening a casket full of honey and wine and sweet things to students who are very used to trash.
I should have realized this before but 😭😭😭 Davy is the undisciplined heart 😭😭😭 and Agnes is the disciplined heart 😭😭😭 and I just 😭😭😭

not Davy literally sitting down to write Agnes and tell her everything as the first major action of his heart after getting engaged to Dora. not that
often when I really, really like somebody- in either a romantic or a platonic way-and it’s a really specific, powerful, painful thing I take that feeling and bury it so far down inside of my heart that no one, including me and the person who inspired the feeling, can ever find it. and I, for one, think that is super healthy and mature of me.
This is literally Agnes from David Copperfield.
Remember in 2010 when Taio Cruz said "I throw my hands up in the air sometimes"? I appreciated his restraint. You can't just throw your hands up in the air whenever. There's a time and a place, and that time was 2010, and the place was the club.
Other Things I Love About Tangled
(because I just rewatched)
-when Eugene and Rapunzel are waiting for the lights out in their little boat and she’s putting flowers in the water and he’s holding them for her and it’s just this perfect, wordless, trusting, beautiful, almost casual moment
-Rapunzel’s braid with the flowers woven through period. It’s the peak example of what I love in movies- when women have to (and do) put their hair back for practical purposes instead of leaving it down and in their face but it’s pretty too.
-the fact that Rapunzel’s parents never say anything— literally, all of their scenes are wordless—but we know who they are anyway and understand them and love them
-Rapunzel losing her hair at the end. And it is a real loss. Her brown pixie/bob is super cute but it’s striking that the princess character loses the thing that we think of as being iconic and central to her and a stereotype of feminine beauty in many fairy tales—her long blonde hair. And it is irrevocable. It’s not going to grow back. Her act of sacrifice changes her by physically marking her forever.
Please picture me reading the chapter of David Copperfield where he and Agnes finally get together aloud to my students.

that Chesterton letter to Frances where he was like “look I think objectively your bad health is good for society because you bear it so well. now of course if I could guarantee you perfect health for life by cutting off my hand I would do it in a second and whistle the whole time. But as a philosopher I’m sure the world has reason to bless your bad health. I’m not sure that would be a comfort to most people but I know it will be a comfort to you.” a little bit everything to me.
“They spoke very little of their mutual feelings; pretty phrases and warm expressions being probably unnecessary between such tried friends. Theirs was that substantial affection which rises (if any arises at all) when the two who are thrown together begin first by knowing the rougher sides of each other’s character, and not the best till further on, the romance growing up in the interstices of a mass of hard prosaic reality. This good-fellowship-camaraderie-usually occurring through similarity of pursuits, is unfortunately seldom superadded to love between the sexes, because men and women associate, not in their labors, but in their pleasures merely. Where, however, happy circumstance permits its development, the compounded feeling proves itself to be the only love which is as strong as death-that love which many waters cannot quench, not the floods drown, beside which the passion usually called by the name is evanescent as steam.”
— Far From the Madding Crowd, Thomas Hardy: the kind of love between Bathsheba and Gabriel
