Thinking about how Sam probably thought Dean was just getting them food when his dad told him Dean was away for a while, while in reality Dean got arrested and sent away. John probably continued to disappear, Dean was gone somewhere his dad refused to elaborate on, no wonder that kid got a supernatural imaginary friend. His only company, his brother, was gone. And I would never blame Dean for dropping everything and going back as soon as John came to get him, because how could he leave Sam all alone? What if John changed his mind and left him even longer, if he chose to stay? He made his sons so isolated and so dependent on each other for any sort of companionship and comfort, then ripped them apart without warning.
