Hi! I love your art! I'm a new follower! 💖💖 I'd like to get more into digital art, because I've tried painting skin tones, but I find it too difficult, could you give me some advice, please? Is there a brush that works better for you than others? (I recently started using Autodesk Sketchbook again, and some brushes aren’t the same as they used to be; they’ve probably been improved, but I don’t feel comfortable with them anymore.) Is there any digital painting software you’d recommend? Oh! I’d also like to ask you: how long does it take you, roughly, to create and finish a drawing? Thank you so much!
Hello!!! Welcome!!! I’ll answer the last couple questions first then give my mini crash course into painting skin!
Every art program has it’s pro’s and cons, you can create master pieces with anything. I even use the notes app on my iphone and mspaint to draw. I will say though, if you think you want to functionalities for drawing art and features to aid you: paint tool sai or clip studio. Or if you’re thinking you want a career in art, clip studio or photoshop, bc those seem to be more industry standard from what I’ve seen. I personally draw with clip studio bc im it’s biggest glazer, also the free assets store for brushes, and gradient maps, and 3d models is literally a life saver and I love all the hidden functions in the app.
Don’t use me as a baseline for how fast or long you should take, draw at your own pace and you’ll come to your own speed. I typically spend 1-3 hrs in sketching (i love redrawing and reworking lol), 0.5 hrs in laying flats, 0.5-1 hrs in shadows, and typically 1-2 hours in rendering. Thats when I’m feeling productive though lol I can easily double all of it if I don’t lock in.
I’m not too sure how to help you exactly with skin tones, but I can give you a run down on how I do them for my simple drawings.
Firstly, I recommend finding out if your brush can do color jitter! Skin is never one tone or color, so drawing with slight color variation is always helpful. Here’s my settings in clip studio with an example of how it looks.
Here is babian! With some basic colors and shadows! And here he is with blush on his cheeks, ears, lips, and neck! Adding blush gives more life to the skin
I also add gradients using a multiple shadow layer to make the skin look a little rounder and less flat. (The second image is what the layer looks like when it’s not on multiply)
Then my final step is to add overlays and just more blush tones on top! To bring up the color more and gave a hazy effect while making the colors a little more cohesive. I also recommend coloring in the linart from pure black to more browns or reds around where the blush area is. Makes it look a lot less harsh.
