Did you know that modern C sections were invented by African womenā centuries before they were standard elsewhere?
Midwives and surgeons living around Lake Tanganyika and Lake Victoria perfected the procedure hundreds of years ago. When a baby couldnāt be delivered vaginally, these healers sedated the laboring mother using large amounts of banana wine. They tied the mother to the bed for safety, sterilized a knife using heat, and made the incision, acting quickly as a team to prevent excessive blood loss or the accidental cutting of other organs. The combination of sterile, sharp equipment and sedation made the procedure surprisingly calm and comfortable for the mother.
After the baby was delivered, antiseptic tinctures and salves were used to clean the area and stitches were applied. Women rarely developed infections, shock, or excessive blood loss after a cesarean section and the most common problem reported was that it took longer for the motherās milk to come in (an issue that was solved with friends and relatives who would nurse the baby instead).
In Uganda, C sections were normally performed by a team of male healers, but in Tanzania and DRC, they were typically done by female midwives.
The majority of women and babies survived this, and when questioned about it by European colonists in the mid-1800s, many people in Uganda and Tanzania indicated that the procedure had been performed routinely since time immemorial.
This was at a time when Europeans had only barely started to figure out that they should wash their hands before performing surgery, when nearly half of European and US women died in childbirth, and when nearly 100% of European women died if a C section was performed.
Detailed explanations of Ugandan C-sections were published globally in scholarly journals by the 1880s and helped the rest of the world learn how to save mothers and babies with minimal complications.
So if youāre one of the people who wouldnāt be alive today without a C-section, you have Ugandan surgeons and Tanzanian and Congolese midwives to thank for their contributions to medical science.

Thank you, my sisters.
Wow. I wish they would teach things like this is school.
America in particular (Europeās slightly better, but not much) only seems to remember Africa exists when itās being visited by one of the four horsemen. Which is really sad. Itās an entire continent with a rich history, people.
And we all know why, tooā¦
Get him karen
Absolutely savage. Holy shit.
I donāt believe, as many people have suggested, that Melania is abused. But even if she were, that doesnāt preclude her from also being a terrible, racist person. Those arenāt mutually exclusive things. People need to stop reflexively defending Melania Trump. She is not Lady Guinevere. Defending Melania Trump perpetuates the enduring notion of the āpurityā of even the most horrible white women, and allows racism to continue.
Meliania made her choice.
She repeatedly defends her racist husband and his racist policies. You are not practicing āfeminismā by defending terrible white women and constantly equivocating for racist white people. Meliania is just as horrible as her husband. History needs to remember her that way. Stop making up excuses for her. Please and thank you.

This is my first photo with BUB next our last photo together.
On the morning of Sunday, December 1st 2019 we lost the purest, kindest and most magical living force on our planet. BUB was cheerful and full of love laying in our bed with us Saturday night, but unexpectedly passed away peacefully in her sleep.. I have always been fully transparent about BUBās health, and it was no secret that she was battling a persistent and aggressive bone infection. Ā Even knowing this, we werenāt expecting her to pass so soon or so abruptly without warning. Ā I truly believe that she willingly made the decision to leave her failing body so that our family would not have to make that difficult decision ourselves.Ā
It is impossible to put into words the profound effect that BUB has had on my life, on the lives of thousands of homeless pets, and on the lives of those of you that have cared for her as if she were your own family. She taught me everything that I know about unconditional love, she brought my wife Stacy and I together, sheās the reason we have our beautiful children Rosco and Lula, and she has been a constant source of warmth and love in our lives for the past 8 years. To say that our family is devastated would be an understatement. But most importantly, BUB has made a huge difference in the world of animal welfare, and in the lives of millions of people worldwide. She has literally saved thousands of lives (both pets and humans), she started the first national fund for special needs pets, she was the subject of groundbreaking genetic and biological Ā research, sheās helped raise over $700,000 for animals in need, and has spread a message of determination, positivity, and perseverance to people all over the world. And even though my heart is absolutely crushed by her graceful departure from planet Earth, Ā I know that her sprit, magic, and overwhelming energy are still with us, reminding us every day to be better.
Dearest BUB, I will never forget your generosity, your limitless supply of love, or your uncanny ability to bring so much magic and joy to the world. I am forever honored and humbled that you chose me as your caretaker. Please visit all of us in our dreams often. GOOD JOB BUB.
I spend a fair amount of timeĀ teaching womenĀ to kick men in the balls, and Iāve learned that this activity tends to generate controversy. Here, according to actual adults who have actually said these things to me, are some reasons you shouldĀ notĀ kick a guy in the balls:
1. It will make him angry.
I should hope so. Iām not sending him a friend request. If I kick him hard enough, thereās a good chance Iāll render him unable to act upon his anger.Ā ThatāsĀ my goal. His feelings are his problem.
2. It will make him hurt you worse.
Statistics sayĀ otherwise. And anyway, heās already demonstrated his desire to hurt me. Why should I give him carte blanche to decideĀ how muchĀ heās going to hurt me? Iād rather be an active participant in that decision-making process.
3. Groin kicks arenāt really that devastating; Iāve seen lots of guys get hit in the balls and it hardly fazed them.
This response (almost universally from men) is so common Iāve come to think of it as āgroinsplainingāāyou can see it many of the YouTube comments in the videos linked above. These people rarely volunteer to demonstrate their own iron balls in a real kicking situation, but they confidently assert that men in general can shrug off all kinds of damage to the groin. All I can say is, Iāve seen two-year-olds take down grown menĀ via the groin, and toddlers donāt even have any training. I do. I like my odds.
4. We shouldnāt be teaching people how to kick men in the balls; we should be teaching men not to do anything that would make us have to kick them in the balls.
Hey, thatās a great idea! Do you have a detailed, research-based plan for teaching all men everywhere to behave themselves all the time? And do you have funding for your efforts, and buy-in from politicians and community leaders, and a network of trained, experienced instructors who can effect this change? If not, better get started on your grant proposal. In the meantime, Iāll just be over here teaching people how to kick guys in the balls.Ā Thatās what I do.
5. Telling people they should kick an assailant in the balls is the same as telling victims who didnāt kick their assailant in the balls that they did something wrong.
No, it isnāt. Itās a practical way toĀ reduceĀ the number of future victims by giving them more viable options to disrupt and survive an assault.
Fact: We have the power to damage the bodies of men who try to hurt us. Youāre saying we shouldnāt let people use that power. Iām offering people more choices; youāre trying to take them away.
6. Kicking a guy in the balls just makes the world a more violent place.
Maybe, in the short term. But if it stops him from killing someone, or putting them in the hospital, isnāt that a net win for non-violence? The Dalai LamaĀ thinks so.
One in four women will have good reason to kick a guy in the ballsĀ at some point in her life. Luckily, itās not rocket science. Anyone can do it! And ball-kickingās efficacy is beyond dispute, as the men of MMA so nobly helped us illustrate here. Gentlemen, if any of you are reading this, and conscious: Cheers, and get well soon (the non-wife-beaters among you, anyway).
AIA REPORTING FOR DUTY
okay, so!
There is a trick to it. You do NOT want to soccer kick the dude because thatās a little projectile aiming at a littler target.
Itāll do in a pinch, and itāll hurt, but it wonāt incapacitate, which is what you want. You donāt want āouch!ā Or even āFUCK!ā
You want him puking on the floor, and this is how we do:
Thereās two ranges where a groin kick works: close and mid-range.
Say someone grabs you face to face, or pins you to the wall, and your hands are blocked. Now youāre close-range. What do you do? You come in closer, as close as you can, and with every ounce of adrenaline and aggression in your body, you do a can-can kick.
You know the first step in the can-can, where you raise your knee up as high as itāll go as strong as you can?
Do that, as hard as you can, repeatedly.
If that doesnāt work, hereās the alternative. Youāre going to take your hand, grasp between the thighs underhand. Its going to feel like youāre ācradlingā the testicles. Dig your fingertips into the fragile skin BEHIND the scrotum. Then, once you have a good grip, you turn your hand into a vise, with your fingers digging inwards to the material. If you do it right, you should feel the testes INSIDE the scrotum. You want, whenever possible, to hook your fingers under them.
Then, with your hands in a claw and your fingertips latched behind the testes, you turn your hand sharply, as though you were turning a doorknob. Simultaneously, haul your elbow back and up as hard as you can.
If done properly, this technique can tear the scrotal tissue, and done with enough force, can tear the testes out of your attackerās body.
No matter HOW pissed he is, heās gonna drop. Iāve tried this technique on guys wearing cups and even with protection, it is not a fun feeling.
If youāre mid-range and have enough room for a kick, the goal becomes to use your shin. The shin is actually called the tibia, which ounce for ounce is one of the strongest bones in your body. So, hereās what you do, my little bloodthirsty beaus:
You aim, you scream āDO NOT COME CLOSER I SAID NO!ā (legal purposes, because now youāre officially exercising your right to self-defence). Maintain a 360 degree awareness, just in case he has friends, and then, when heās close enough, connect your shin full on soccer kick with the delicate squish of his testicles.
What you want is as much upwards force as possible in combination with as much momentum as you can manage. When he collapses, which he will, then stomp on his groin again, and then run.
The latter has less of a trick to it. Itās primarily about momentum and force.
Remember, if youāre close enough to put your hands on him, use your knee. If heās coming at you, use your shin.
If you can smell the nachos he had for dinner, rip his fucking balls off.
Itās easy to do, theyāre tiny little squishiness wrapped in a delicate flap of skin about as thin as a toenail.
Remember: if heās coming at you, heās ALREADY out to hurt you. Might as well give the fucker a reason to be pissed.
How to Kick a Guy in the Balls: An Illustrated Guide
Someone once told me that the way to train a proper knee in the groin (with appropriate aggression if you want to hurt him enough to let you go is to train and act as if youāre not aiming your knee at the groin, but aiming for somewhere much higher so that your mind knows to really ram your knee upward.
A male friend of a friend of the family once generously and kindly advised me that if anyone with nuts ever got up on me without me wanting him to do so, to āgrab his balls as hard as you can, squeeze, and yank away from his body until they feel like marmalade. Then run.ā I have never forgotten this advice.
My self-defense trainer used to say:Ā āEyes are like grapes. Ears are like pull tabs. And if youāre going to grab some, girls - grab, pull, twist, and bring those balls home to Mama.ā ā¦I really need to embroider that on a cushion.
https://thesocietypages.org/socimages/2015/12/30/why-dont-men-kick-each-other-in-the-balls/Ā
āWhat would street fights between guys look likeāor professional fights for that matterāif one could go below the belt? For one, thereād be a lot more collapsing. Two, a lot more writhing in pain. Three, a lot less getting up. All in all, it would add up to less time looking powerful and more time looking pitiful. And it would send a clear message that menās bodies are vulnerable.ā
ā¦
āSo, men generally agree to pretend that the balls just arenāt there. The effect is that we tend to forget just how vulnerable men are to the right attack and continue to think of women as naturally more fragile.ā
And:
https://thesocietypages.org/socimages/2017/07/31/i-argue-that-men-avoid-ball-kicking-to-protect-the-myth-of-masculinity-men-respond-in-the-most-surprising-way/
āIn 2015 I wrote an essay in which I speculated about why we donāt see men kicking each other in the balls more often. We leave no stones unturned here at SocImages, folks.I argued that men donāt kick each other in the balls because it would reveal to everyone an inherent and undeniable biological weakness in every man, not just the man getting kicked. Ā In other words, itās a secret pact to protect the myth of masculine superiority. I expected a reaction, but I was genuinely surprised at what transpired. In public ā in the comments ā men debated strategy, arguing that men donāt kick each other in the balls because itās actually a difficult blow to land or would escalate the fight. But in private ā in my email inbox ā men sent me hushed messages of you-are-so-right-though.ā
Just doing my regular real blog for yāall. Keep safe.
Just reading these notes gives me such a warm, comforting feeling. Love you all.

In the 1960ā²s Legally a woman couldnāt
Open a bank account or get a credit card without signed permission from her father or hr husband.
Serve on a jury - because it might inconvenience the family not to have the woman at home being her husbandās helpmate.
Obtain any form of birth control without her husbandās permission. You had to be married, and your hub and had to agree to postpone having children.
Get an Ivy League education. Ivy League schools were menās colleges ntil the 70ā²s and 80ā²s. When they opened their doors to women it was agree that women went there for their MRS. Degee.
Experience equality in the workplace: Kennedyās Commission on the Status of Women produced a report in 1963 that revealed, among other things, that women earned 59 cents for every dollar that men earned and were kept out of the more lucrative professional positions.
Keep her job if she was pregnant.Until the Pregnancy Discrimination Act in 1978, women were regularly fired from their workplace for being pregnant.
Refuse to have sex with her husband. The mid 70s saw most states recognize marital rape and in 1993 it became criminalized in all 50 states. Nevertheless, marital rape is still often treated differently to other forms of rape in some states even today.
Get a divorce with some degree of ease. Before the No Fault Divorce law in 1969, spouses had to show the faults of the other party, such as adultery, and could easily be overturned by recrimination.
Have a legal abortion in most states. The Roe v. Wade case in 1973 protected a womanās right to abortion until viability.
Take legal action against workplace sexual harassment. According to The Week, the first time a court recognized office sexual harassment as grounds for legal action was in 1977.
Play college sports Title IX of the Ā Education Amendments of protects people from discrimination Ā based on sex in education programs or activities that receive Federal financial Ā assistance It was nt until this statute that colleges had teams for womenās sports
Apply for menās Jobs Ā The EEOC rules that sex-segregated help wanted ads in newspapers are illegal. Ā This ruling is upheld in 1973 by the Supreme Court, opening the way for women to apply for higher-paying jobs hitherto open only to men.
This is why we needed feminism - this is why we know that feminism works
I just want to reiterate this stuff, because I legit get the feeling there are a lot of younger women for whom it hasnāt really sunk in what it is todayās GOP is actively trying to return to.
Did you go to a good college? Shame on you, you took a college placement that could have gone to a man who deserves and needs it to support or prepare for his wife & children. But if you really must attend college, well, some men like that, you can still get married if you focus on finding the right man.
Got a job? Why? A manĀ could be doing that job. You should be at home caring for a family. You shouldnāt be taking that job away from a man who needs it (see college, above). You definitely donāt have a career ā youāll be pregnant and raising children soon, so no need to worry about promoting you.
This shit was within living memory.Ā IāM A MILLENIAL and my mother was in the second class that allowed women at an Ivy League school. Men who are alive today either personally remember shit like this or have parents/family who have raised them into thinking this was the way America functioned back in the blissful Good Old Days. There are literally dudes in the GOP old enough to remember when it was like this and yearn for those days to return.
When people talk about resisting conservativism and the GOP, weāre not just talking about whether the wage gap is a myth or not.Ā Weāre talking about whether women even have the fundamental right to exist as individuals, to run their own households and compete for jobs and be considered on an equal footing with men in any arena at all in the first place.
I was a child in the 1960s, a teenager in the 1970s, a young adult in the 1980s. This is what it was like: When I was growing up, it was considered unfortunate if a girl was good at sports. Girls were not allowed in Little League. Girlsā teams didnāt exist in high school, except at all-girlsā high schools. Boys played sports, and girls were the cheerleaders. People used to ask me as a child what I wanted to be when I grew up. I said I wanted to be a brain surgeon or the first woman justice on the Supreme Court. Everyone told me it was impossibleāthose just werenāt realistic goals for a girlāthe latter, especially, because you couldnāt trust women to judge fairly and rationally, after all. In the 1960s and 1970s, all women were identified by their marital status, even in arrest reports and obituaries. In elementary school, my science teacher referred to Pierre Curie as DOCTOR Curie and Marie Curie as MRS. Curieā¦because, as he put it, āshe was just his wife.ā (Both had doctorates and both were Nobel prize winners, so you would think that both would be accorded respect.) Companies could and did require women to wear dresses and skirts. Failure to do could and did get women fired. And it was legal. It was also legal to fire women for getting married or getting pregnant. The rationale was that a woman who was married or who had a child had no business working; that was what her husband was for. Aetna Insurance, the biggest insurance company in America, fired women for all of the above. A man could rape his wife. Legally. I can remember being twelve years old and reading about legal experts actually debating whether or not a man could actually be said to coerce his wife into having sex. This was a serious debate in 1974. The debate about marital rape came up in my law school, too, in 1984. Could a woman be raped by her husband? The guys all said noāa woman got married, so she was consenting to sex at all times. So I turned it around. I asked them if, since a man had gotten married, that meant that his wife could shove a dildo or a stick or something up his ass any time she wanted to for HER sexual pleasure. (Hey, I thought it was reasonable. If one gender was legally entitled to force sex on the other, then obviously the reverse should also be true.) The male law students didnāt like the idea. Interestingly, they commented that being treated like that would make them feel like a woman. My reaction was, āThank you for proving my pointā¦ā The concept of date rape, when first proposed, was considered laughable. If a woman went out on a date, the argument of legal experts ran, sexual consent was implied. Even more sickening was the fact that in some statesāeven in the early 1980sāa man could rape his daughterā¦and it was no worse than a misdemeanor. Women taking self-defense classes in the 1970s and 1980s were frequently described in books and on TV as ācute.ā The implication was that it was absurd for a woman to attempt to defend herself, but wasnāt it just adorable for her to try? I was expressly forbidden to take computer classes in junior and senior years of high schoolā1978-79 and 1979-80ābecause, as the principal told me, āOnly boys have to know that kind of thing. You girls are going to get married, and you wonāt use it.ā When I was in collegeāfrom 1980 to 1984āthere were no womensā studies. The idea hadnāt occurred in many places because the presumption was that there was nothing TO study. My history professorāa man who had a doctorate in historyāinformed me quite seriously that women had never produced a noted painter, sculptor, composer, architect or scientist becauseā¦wait for itā¦womensā brains were too small. (He was very surprised when I came up with a list of fifty women gifted in the arts and science, most of whom he had never heard of before.) When Walter Mondale picked Geraldine Ferraro as a running mate in 1984, the press hailed it as a disaster. What would happen, they asked fearfully, if Mondale died and Ferraro became president? What if an international crisis arose and she was menstruating? She could push the nuclear button in a fit of PMS! It would be the end of the WORLD!! ā¦No, they WERENāT kidding. On the surface, things are very different now than they were when I was a child, a teen and a young adult. But Iām afraid that people now do not realize what it was like then. Iāve read a lot of posts from young women who say that they are not feminists. If the only exposure to feminism they have is the work of extremists, I cannot blame them overmuch. I wish that I could tell them what feminism was like when it was newāwhen the dream of legal equality was just a dream, and hadnāt even begun to come true. When āwomanās workā was a sneerāand an overt putdown. When people tut-tutted over bright and athletic girls with the words, āReally, itās a shame sheās not a boy.ā That lack of feminism wasnāt all men opening doors and picking up checks. A lot of it was an attitude of patronizing contempt that hasnāt entirely died out, but which has become less publicly acceptable. I wish I could make them feel what it was likeā¦when grown men were called āmenā and grown women were āgirls.ā
Know your history.
So this, too, is what they mean saying āmake America great againā and/or the good old days.
REBLOG FOREVER.
I am 70. I remember all those things. I was a student nurse from 64 to 67 and we were not permitted to āfinishā a bed bath on a male or insert a catheter in a male. Seeing male genitals might cause us āharmā or upset our delicate sensibilities. Imagine when we graduated and were āthrownā to the wolves. Imagine if you were a male patient who had to be the first to be āpracticedā on by a graduate nurse. (Ha!) At the school I attended no student nurse could be married. Only one school in my city (Atlanta) would even admit married women and Male Nurses werenāt even thought of. What man would want to be a nurse when he could be a Doctor. In all my training I only remember 3 or 4 Women who were Doctorās and a very few, (less than 5 or 6) female interns or residents (and this was a teaching hospital) and most of those were OB/Gyns and one was a pediatrician.
When I graduated and was going to get married I wanted to go on birth control pills. You needed to be on them for a least one cycle before they were effective. I wonāt go into what hoops I had to jump through to get a prescription from my Dr. (a man, natch) but when i went to the drug store to get the prescription filled I ended up having to get my future husband to āaccompanyā me so the pharmacistĀ āinterviewā him and see if it was okay with him for me to be on the pill.
Even when we went to get a marriage license I had to get my Fatherās signature and we had to go before a Judge because I was not yet 21 (I was 20 and 9 months).
I could go on and on, getting a credit card in MY name, etc., but I will tell you that WE MUST RESIST.
The number of people I know who romanticize gender inequality is frankly terrifying. A world never existed in which the lives of women were simplified by benevolent men who saw to her every want and need. That was not a thing. A world never existed in which women were all ladies, men were all gentlemen, & everything was some great big cishet fairytale. Feminists arenāt a bunch of upstarts who want to destroy a perfectly wholesome and non-harmful system. Justā¦look at history. Look at the posts above. We. Must. Resist..
About 8: The State of New York only added No-Fault Divorce as an option in 2010 (!!!)
I want to repeat here.Ā
This is what they mean, when they sayĀ āOld-fashioned valuesā
When conservatives start waxing lyrical about theĀ āgood old daysā, this is what they mean. They are fully aware how much things blew for women, and they would like to return to that.Ā
i dont think whites understand how being white makes literally everything easier.
it effects everything.
being trans is easier when youre white.
being gay is easier when youre white.
being disabled is easier when youre white.
being a woman is easier when youre white.
being autistic is easier when youre white.
oppression is eased when you are white, as you get extra privileges, and your whiteness is seen as a positive characteristic that in some ways counter-balances your other forms of being a minority. whiteness controls everything.
you are automatically way more innocent in your own oppression as a gay, trans, disabled person because of your whiteness.
never forget this.
Imma judge any white person who likes this but doesnāt reblog
The thing I donāt think white people understand is. When I came out to my parents as not straight, the first thing my mom said to me was that āI canāt believe you would do this. Youāre black and youāre a woman, why would you add another strike.ā White people will not have that experience.
Iāve been seeing a lot of anti-Nazi ones, which is great, but I felt like we needed one to show our support for the Jewish community. Ā
all you goyim I follow - I see you reblogging this and it warms me.
<3 HECK YES <3
If you really wanna get a sense of just how fucking big blue whales really are, then consider the fact that the dolphins swimming in front of this whale are over two metres long
While 100% a species of dolphin i want to point out those are ORCAS. if anyone got confused for a second like i did. Those are fucking orcas. Holy shit that is a giant fucking whale.
Each orca is over 6.5 feet long, Americans.
guys, just, no. these are likely pacific whitesided dolphins, a criminally adorable cetacean found in the North Pacific that does indeed average at around 2.3-2.5 meters long.
now THIS is an orca, pictured here in the act of headbutt-murdering a common dolphin right into fucking oblivion. (common dolphins are about the same size as the pacific whitesided dolphin, for scale.)
thatās right, orcas max out at an astonishing 25 feet long, or well over 7 meters. thatās almost a quarter as long as that blue whale, and is just generally way too fucking big to deal with today when you remember that weāre talking about an apex predator the size of a minibus. theyāre simply too big to be mistaken for anything else in the ocean!
orcas eat a wide variety of foods depending on their location, from herring to that really unfortunate common dolphin up there (rip.) if I really wanted to give the lowdown on them Iād be here all day, but Iāll tell you that orcas are also the only known predator to hunt and kill blue whales. so lets just be glad itās only the dolphins in that first pic!
also hereās a cheerful reminder that the evolutionary rise of the Orca mysteriously coincided perfectly with the decline and extinction of Megalodon!Ā
coincidence, Iām sure. have a good night, everybody!
The Orca arriving in the worldās oceans, seeing the Megalodon: āIām about to end this manās whole careerā
I love how this started as admiring blue whales and ended in quaking in fear over giant murder tuxedos
whatās your chicken soup movie? that movie you always watch when youāre sick or sad and need cheering up, the movie you like to watch on rainy days, the movie that always makes you feel warm and settled inside

idk whatĀ vsco girl means but i assume itās yet another criticism on teenage girls for existing
āvsco girls like crop tops and instagramā well yes u see we are currently in the second half of the 2010sĀ
A video of Drake kissing an underaged girl is currently going viral. Drake has been in the media multiple times for his behavior with young
Video of Drake kissing an Underaged girl, feeling her breasts, learning sheās underaged, then Kissing her again revealed
Fucking get him tried and prosecuted and away from the fucking public. Y'all bitches who were defending can die off too. I better not ever see his shitface in my dash in a good light ever again.
