Particular characterisation stuff I love in Drarry fics
Harry thriving as an Auror. Loving what he does and being super good at it. Having great instincts and following them much more often then the official rules. Being seen as a leader, loved and respected by his team.
Draco with an aristocratic edge, including all the things that entails. Using his pureblood etiquette training as a shield, as a way of navigating the world when he feels out of his depth.
Harry living with completely unreasonable guilt over the people who died in the battle. Unable to let it go, no matter what anyone says to him. Guilt that’s a part of him, that influences the choices he makes even years later.
Draco putting the work in to overcome the bigotry instilled by the culture in which he grew up. Having to check himself, his assumptions, his thought processes. Not finding the process all that easy or natural, but still very much wanting to become a better person. Draco craving Harry’s acknowledgement that he’s become a better person, even he doesn’t want to. The complete lack of a magical, “I’ve completely changed how dare you judge me” spell.
The ability to make each other laugh, and both of them being completely surprised and delighted by this.
Harry having come to terms with and understanding the choices Dumbledore made and having zero chill about people making unfounded accusations against him. Still being Dumbledore’s man through and through, even if now he sees him as a realistically fallible human being. Harry retaining complex, contradictory and unresolved feelings regarding Snape.
Draco retaining complex, contradictory and unresolved feelings regarding his father.
Harry with a dry, dark, sarcastic sense of humour.
Draco almost unwillingly falling for Harry’s goodness. Being irritated by Harry’s self-righteousness, but at the same time admiring of and inspired by his bravery, love and determination to protect people.
Harry retaining the same strong value he placed on human life in the books. Being unwilling to take life unless absolutely forced to, no matter what the baddie has done. Harry being the same person who didn’t even direct an AK at Voldemort. Harry who will always choose not to kill if he possibly can and it breaking him a bit if he can’t.
Draco being brave, but having to work harder at it than Harry.
Harry seeing that. Harry falling for Draco specifically because of that.
When they don’t lose their sexual tension after becoming a couple. Where they continue to spar and tease and compete and have fun during sex, even after they’re in love. When their sex life never becomes entirely soft, never loses its edge.
Harry with an unbreakable bond with Ron and Hermione. He doesn’t even think about it. They’re a part of him and he’d die for them. Harry who gets a lot of pleasure out of his friendship with Ron.
Draco loving his friends, but distancing himself from those who refuse to acknowledge the fucked up aspects of pureblood culture. Draco recognising the fucked up aspects of pureblood culture, even if he gets defensive about it now and then.
Harry who still has a lot of trouble controlling his temper. Harry who’s unresolved trauma leads to him losing his temper more often than he’d like. Who lashes out at those close to him, because they make him feel safe.
Draco going icy with hate and malevolence when someone threatens someone he cares about.
Harry being self-sacrificing to a fault in the process of protecting people he cares about.
Draco still loving being the centre of attention in social situations and putting on little performances.
Harry putting in effort to see through Draco’s self-protective distancing and refusing to allow Draco to freeze him out when he knows it’s out of fear rather than anger.
Draco craving Harry’s respect, desperately wanting Harry to get over himself and start liking him, but, at least early on, hating himself for it.
The two of them working together as equals, with different skills that balance each other. Neither of them being more awesome than the other. Being of equal intelligence, even if they shine in different areas. Realising this and calling on the other one’s skills in situations where it’s necessary. Admiring each other’s skills and acknowledging this to each other.
The two of them having to clear hurdles and walk through fire to get to a place where they can mutually admit their feelings, but once they do being crazily, passionately, desperately out of control in love with each other.

(I would love to read other people’s verision on this list, so feel free to comment or reblog with your own. ❤️)
I’ll need to think on it and see if I have any ideas to offer, but this covers a great deal of how I enjoy drarry’s characterisation.
