Youâve heard of the Roaring 20s........
now get ready for the Screaming 20s - coming to a decade near you in 2020
is it too early or can we start screaming now
in retrospect perhaps we should have started sooner
this post is the equivalent of a newspaper from the day of the outbreak being blown past by the wind after you wake up in a post apocalyptic world
World Heritage Post
I just think itâs weird how when you say you went back in the closet as a lesbian or bisexual or whatever no one immediately questions whether you think gay marriage should be illegal but when you say youâve detransitioned, an action that is overwhelmingly taken by trans people experiencing unbearable transphobia, all of a sudden youâre Posey Parker. Babe I donât want to be here either đ
âYou have to understand why weâre waryâ actually no I donât. I expect you to understand that a transphobic society amplifies the voices of a tiny fraction of detransitioners who fit their narrative, and that the idea that most detransitioners (and it is detransitioners, not âdetransâ because most of us are still very much trans) are like the ones you see on the news is a myth that TERFs would love you to believe. Detransitioners are the people most in need of trans rights and it is helping no one to act like weâre poison or that we should concede the word for our experiences to a tiny fraction of us.
Also, cis guy Jared who thought he might be a girl for a little bit but decided it wasnât for him is not your enemy. Heâs probably more likely to be accepting of trans people than someone who has never questioned their gender. Grow up

This tweet means a lot to me.
Itâs probably a really cool and good sign that this post I made in 2014 is going around again, right?
I think the thing that annoys me most about AI on a personal, day to day, level is what it has done to grammar checkers. If you've never done a lot of editing, or used to 5+ years ago but haven't really in the last couple years, I can't even begin to describe how fucking BAD this shit has gotten. And as an author it is EXHAUSTING.
I just want to catch spelling errors and accidental double spaces and repeated phrases and whenever I use the wrong too/to or affect/effect and shit. But no. They've shoved AI up the ass of every grammar checking software out there and now they all fucking suck and make the most random, obnoxious, nonsensical suggestions.
And yeah, I can ignore all the times it's trying to get me to cut out any semblance of my own voice, or shove things into the wrong tense, or make the most random suggestions on comma usage. But if it's getting all that WRONG, what is it just straight up missing that I SHOULD be correcting? What real spelling and grammar errors are still lurking in there?
"Use Libre Office."
I get why people keep saying this (and other versions of it like "Use Adobe alternatives" and "Use Google product alternatives."). But here's the problem: I do not create in isolation. Even my own 100% personal projects are getting sent to other people whether it's editors or printers or beta readers and unless every single person in that train is using the same products, things can get wonky.
Libre Office and Word handle formatting differently on the back end, which can completely break documents if you move them back and forth between the two. So if I write in Libre Office but my beta readers are still using Word, when I send them a manuscript for review there's a good chance things won't look right and my beta reader will not actually be reviewing what I sent them.
Industry standards are industry standards FOR A REASON. Having everyone on the same workflow can be crucial to getting things done effectively and correctly without creating a lot of extra work. And those things are not going to change overnight, as much as we might want them to.
:| :| :|
Yeah, Word, let me just leave this whole chunk of dialogue without the closing quotation marks. That's the thing to do. How dare I have two punctuation marks in a row. It's not like that's how closing quotation marks fucking work.
I am going to light something on fire.
And you know, for young writers, this has got to be so detrimental just from the perspective of opening your document and seeing a million corrections that, frankly, don't need to be there. If you're a young writer you're likely not going to have the background knowledge to know what is and isn't a good suggestion, you're just going to see a document that makes it look like you made every mistake possible so clearly you must be a terrible, stupid writer and should just give up.
Periodic reminder that older versions of Office still work on modern Windows and does everything you need. Office 2016 is available from the Internet Archive and will save your ass.
Plus, spell check won't hallucinate new words!
I know it's unfair vilification and stuff but it's also a lot of fun to see old media and stuff where people were SO scared of big animals like lions, sharks, crocodiles and wolves were fully expected to just come and eat you the moment you stepped into their territory. In older media we also made that assumption about gorillas and in still older we thought it'd be whales. But some animals that will actually fuck you up got left behind. Boars will kill you and eat you. They're way more likely to do so than any of those other things actually. Hippos, obviously, got off like bandits always being depicted as cute and dopey. And then there's the squids. Not giant kraken size squids. The eight foot squids that hunt in packs and will fuck you up if you fall in the water at night. I can't BELIEVE people slept on that. It's like all they cared about were the huge deep sea ones we never see. The medium size wolf pack squids were right there.
Oh some of you don't know about the squids. I talked about them in another thread that went kinda viral somewhere or other but one of the reasons you should not swim in the open ocean at night in many parts of the world is that the water starts teeming with these:
And as you can see it is not like instant death, they too are just animals and they are often just gently curious about the presence of humans! But people who study and dive with sharks will tell you you're safe as long as you stay calm and know what you're doing. The world's leading professional night divers and experts on these squids, specifically??? Stress in every interview and article and paper they write in that you simply do not fuck around with these squids. They know what they're doing and they still all have at least one story of being attacked, in some cases having to be hospitalized. Considering just how rarely anybody puts themselves in the pitch dark nighttime ocean on purpose, let alone during a squid feeding frenzy, it sounds like they're quite a bit more likely to consider you potential food than other marine predators. We also don't know how many fatal attacks might have ever happened, because what humboldt squid like to do with large prey is just drag it away into the darkness forever. The two worst attacks ever proven involved two or three squid at a time latching on to a diver (in BOTH cases they were professionals and knew the risk!) and jetting straight downward with enough force that both divers suffered injury from the sudden pressure change alone, including burst eardrums, nearly passed out and they probably would have died if they hadn't broken free. In general, people who die drowning in the dark open ocean are either never found, or they're found in pieces picked over by enough scavengers that the precise cause of death can only be narrowed down to "the sea." But now you know ONE of "the sea's" possible murder weapons :)
There's a short section on Humboldt squid in Wikipedia's entry for Cephalopod attacks on humans:
And if you can get past some of Animal Planet's hokey presentation style, this video includes a bit of interview with one of those professional experts who still got nearly squidded from existence:
There is of course some debate about all this, with some arguing that all proven documented attacks occurred on people with reflective diving equipment, which they say the squid must have mistaken for the shine of fish. However, there are lots and lots of people who have to fish around these squids to survive, who do not have access to that kind of equipment, and also have a consensus that if you fall in the water when big squids are out hunting you might disappear without a trace or perhaps just get your head bitten open. With many modern science guys agreeing with this sentiment, this is one case where the "they're just misunderstood sea friends" crowd is kind of outnumbered. The sea at night is theirs and not ours is all. It's not ours during the day either but since we are neither marine nor nocturnal animals we are double fools in the eyes of the squids, which by the way are these eyes:
No for real:
Absolutely! Also, the Humboldt squid will hunt in packs, sometimes with one flashing brightly to draw attention while the others approach in near unseeable camoflage!
Beautiful footage of the nefarious sea demons also :)
Also because I can't reblog every addition together:
Okay where's the other 1199
I absolutely adore Humboldt squid. I saw a doc once where a scientist was cage diving to study them, and one of the squid squeezed it's entire massive body through the cage bars, bit the guy and squeezed right back out.
Why isnt this an animal that's already long gone viral like honey badgers once did. This is the animal that actually gives no fucks. People really are just that obsessed with bigger squids I guess? But the bigger ones frankly come across as big softies in comparison. One big sea monster can never be as intimidating as a thousand coordinated man sized sea monsters.
This is why I thought that if mermaids had a cultural equivalent to lycanthropy it'd be weresquids. Fun fact nocturnal marine life increases activity on the brightest nights ie the full moon.
This is all fascinating but I'm reblogging it exclusively for the phrase "got nearly squidded from existence."
i was training a young person at work, and she referred to sexual assault as "SA" out loud, and i immediately was like, "no, it's sexual assault, call it what it is," bc idgaf if the algorithm overlords have taught y'all that you should fear direct language, how tf do any of you expect to ever address real issues with any amount of seriousness if you can't even say the words? imagine an advocate looking a sexual assault survivor in the eyes and asking "did he grape you?" it's absolutely fucking absurd, but these young interns and new hires are coming into an environment where we deal with survivors of all different kinds of abuse, and they're coming with the mindset that the words are as bad as the actions, and that makes them shitty at the job and look juvenile af
i HATE self-censorship for a lot of reasons, but being in crisis work makes it even more frustrating. who are you censoring for? like i am being so fr, WHO are you censoring for? have you even thought it through? people who have been raped know that they have been raped. if someone attempts suicide or is grieving someone who did, saying "sewer slide" isn't going to protect them from any of the feelings. a murder victim's family isn't going to feel better bc you said "unalived" instead of murdered. if anything, it's just extremely invalidating and othering. it's saying "what happened to you is so bad that i won't even say the word," which is NOT trauma-informed care. you are not protecting survivors/victims when you self-censor. the ONLY things you protect when you self-censor are the puritanical ideologies that are being encouraged by rich fascists who want your money and obedience
say the fucking words, guys. just say the goddamn words before i go insane!!!

ppl are so annoying âyou canât paint ur bedroom pink youâre an adultâ i did not spend my entire life waiting to grow up and control my life to paint my bedroom beige
I had a sales woman in furniture store try and tell me not to buy a hot bubblegum pink loveseat because she wanted me to âthink about the futureâ
Bitch, I am thinking about the future. I already got a hot bubblegum pink couch at home and now I need a loveseat to go with it.
when I first bought my house, I announced my decision to paint my bedroom purple. I had wanted a purple bedroom for thirty damn years, you fucking bet I was gonna have one now. My friends decided, for some reason, that I meant what one of them referred to as â14 year old girl purpleâ (through whatâs wrong with the colors a 14 year old girl chooses, I donât know, even if theyâre not what I want as an adult). They didnât believe me until they saw the color on the actual wall, even thought they helped me pick out paints. My mother, meanwhile, decided to get worried that if I painted my bedroom a âdark purpleâ, it would be âdepressingâ. As if, with an entire house to live in, I would spend all my time in the bedroom, which I wanted to be dark because I would be sleeping in there. In the damn dark.
I had like one, maybe two friends who were all like FUCK YEAH YOU PAINT IT WHATEVER COLOR YOU WANT, PURPLE BEDROOMS ARE AWESOME.
But when they actualy saw the finished bedroom, every single one of them was like, âOh yeah, thatâs really pretty.â (Well, the ones who supported me from the beginning were more like WOOHOO.)
And the moral of the story is: Fuck âem, please yourself. Either theyâll come around, or you can safely ignore every question of taste they opine about for the rest of time.
This applies to other adulting activities, too. When I was a kid, I decided that I wanted to have a wedding cake made of doughnuts. When I got older, I figured that I would be âmatureâ about it and get a traditional cake, which the older adults approved of. Now that Iâm 25 and facing the possibility of actual marriage in the near future, Iâm just like âmarriage is a social construct but it comes with tax & insurance benefits, so just give me that goddamn doughnut cake.â If they donât like it then they donât have to come to my wedding.

I would like you all to view my office. Iâm thirty and my rainbow room is awesome, people can fight me
Iâm thirty and my first big furniture purchase was a custom coffin shaped coffee table that opens up and is lined with purple crushed velvet. I would have loved it at 13 and I love it now. Growing up doesnât mean you have to abandon what makes you happy.
GROWING UP DOESNâT MEAN YOU HAVE TO ABANDON WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY.
GROWING UP DOESNâT
MEAN YOU HAVE TO ABANDON

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
I have told this story before, and I will tell it again, because I am An Old now and repeating stories forever is our prerogative:
When I bought my house, the kitchen was multiple shades of dingy white. It was dismal, but it was now mine! So went to the hardware store for paint (well, several trips, painted swatches on panel, etc â Iâm very picky. But this was the final, ârealâ trip). It was a busy day in the paint section. There were at least five people behind me in line.
Now, remember, latex paint is slightly lighter and brighter when wet than it is when dry. And Iâd decided to paint my kitchen candy-apple red. The hardware store employee took my gallon off the Paint Jiggler and cracked it open to put a dab on the top, revealing the most incredibly deep pink, and behind me I hear the entire line of people say,
âOh my god.â
âŚin perfect chorus.
I did not realize up until that moment that shocking a crowd of strangers with my paint color choices was a life goal, but at that moment I felt an absolutely overwhelming sense of achievement.
This is the door to my garage. It used to be white. Live your best life.
Mischief the cat says âWho goes there?â
Every visiting friend says âThis is so cool.â
If youâre looking for an excuse to do some decorating that will make your soul sing, this entire thread is your sign to do it and donât look back!
This is the door to
my garage. It used to be
white. Live your best life.
Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
Iâm 35. I have been told my place looks like maybe a LP fan lives there.
Not sure what they mean.
When I first moved into my place, I painted the spare room, that eventually became my office, lime green, the kind of lime green that glows down the corridor when I open the door - The colour was only available as an âaccent colourâ in the section of paints intended for childrenâs playrooms, and in the shop I got a lot of âOh your son will love this!â And from people I knew I got a lot of âOh well, youâre 21 now, youâre basically a teenager, this is a terrible idea, youâll hate it and need to pull out all the furniture to repaint it.â And I have to report that I am now in my forties and my office still looks like this, and it makes me smile every time I see it.
this is such a modern idea, too
not decorating trends; those have always existed. but the idea that color and decoration is inherently childish
this is the dining room at the Eustis Estate in Milton, Massachusetts, from 1878 (where I used to work, briefly). the walls are TEXTURED MICA SHIMMER on a green background. Adult Space For Adults!
A jewelry shop in Paris c. 1901. kids canât buy jewelry!
who can forget the classic 1950s colorful bathroom? Iâm not a huge fan, but still! adult space! bright colors; decorative designs!
meanwhile âyouâre immature if you like Art Nouveauâ is a hot take Iâve really, seriously seen on this webbed site (only once, thank the gods). I donât know who started this, but Iâm going to kill them
I think a lot of it stems from the ubiquitous Waterhouse prints that were sold on college campuses for 20 years. like why would I get a free pass if it were Monet instead Western culture is stupid. The entire point of being an adult is breakfast for dinner and cake for breakfast and dying with the most toys.
instantly decided to reblog when i got to GROWING UP DOESNâT MEAN YOU HAVE TO ABANDON WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY.
The examples of decorated homes above are both either modern or upper class, which makes it easy to dismiss because âsure the rich people have beautiful homesâ and âsure, modern middle-class people have lots of color in their homes.â
So hereâs two examples of traditional Norwegian farmhouse interiors. You know. The kinds of places peasants live in.
This type of painting is called ârosemalingâ and today you usually find it on, like, carved wooden bowls and such that are only used for decoration. But back two centuries ago, it was very common to find the interiors of homes covered in it, in projects that were painted little by little over the decades. Because itâs beautiful to look at, paint is the cheapest way of decorating your house, and what else are you going to do on the long winter nights when itâs too dark and cold to work outdoors?
But mostly, they did it because it made them happy, and it was beautiful.
Those old peasants were on to something, I think.
I painted rooms in my house these colors and some people had doubts:
I have been SO HAPPY.
My wife painted the walls of my studio ORANGE. Glorious sunset orange.
I have always wanted a room that was an amazing color and this one is mine.
When we decided it was time to paint our home, we wanted something that very much marked it as ours. I think we accomplished that!
After having to begrudgingly tolerate shoehorned romance plots in almost all the media I consume, reading the murderbot diaries novels has been a delight, because they do the exact opposite.
Every time there is even a hint of romantic or sexual attraction between characters that goes beyond "Oh here comes this person's marital partner" our good friend Murderbot the Narrator immediately swoops in to metaphorically stomp it down all while being like "I Pretend I Do Not See It đ" .
It would not care or want to know about it even if everyone around it was hooking up left and right, there will be no unnecessary romance to distract us from the plot under Secunit's vigilant watch and honestly I love that.
the countries they're calling the racist hellholes vs the actual racist hellholes
I do want to mention that Canada has the Indian Act which previously forced Indigenous women to lose their Indigenous status if they married someone who didn't have legal status. If they divorced, they would not regain their status. This meant all land claims and other cultural protections (where any existed) would be forfeit. This was until 1985.
I saw an emotional regulation resource that was titled as a resource "for men" & I wanted to talk about this kind of gendering a little.
first, obviously think it is essential that men learn to handle their emotions, because they are people, and it's everyone's responsibility to learn how to self regulate to the best of their ability. and I understand in some contexts it has utility to have emotional regulation resources presented as "for" men specifically, because on a hegemonic level men are expected to outsource managing their emotions to women and children instead of handling it themselves, so general resources about self regulation are likely to be looked over by most men as not relevant or necessary for them.
but. like that is kind of the problem at the same time.
like the whole issue is men thinking they don't need to learn how to handle emotions (identifying them, processing them, expressing them, channeling them usefully, grounding themselves, addressing underlying issues, etc).
and then these kind of half-way measures that position tips as "mental health FOR MEN" "emotional regulation FOR MEN" inevitably ends up cross-pollinating with MRA style analysis where we get things like
"the MALE loneliness epidemic" (as if women do not also experience loneliness and alienation under current conditions), or
"men aren't allowed to cry" (as if women and children aren't berated and patronized for crying all the time & expected to "smile" for men), or
"men have the highest suicide rates" (implying that men are uniquely prone to being actively suicidal, glossing over that women attempt suicide more often)
which all ends up reinforcing this idea that men's emotions are bigger and more serious and urgent than anyone else's, and men need help to manage them, so "society" (women and children) must help them.
which just reproduces the exact social conditions that cause men to not learn how to manage their emotions in the first place.

This guy's illusions are great
Unfortunately, I think this might be AI. While I was willing to think it was just clever editing, on a rewatch I that noticed his leg clips through the jail cellâs toilet.
It's a CGI/editing failure, not AI. That's a human mistake. This guy has been doing this since 2008.
âWhat power the ADA has retained is only due to the constant vigilance and activism of disabled people and their alliesâactivism that the disability rights movement has made possible.â
Kim E. Nielsen
A Disability History of the United States
I think I have that book on my shelves, somewhere. I should find it and reread it.
Anyway, if anyone ever asks you: "WTH do Disabled people have to feel proud about?" it's this.
