I think the argument of “audiobooks are okay actually because it means more people are reading books even though they’re still reading them in a lesser manner” is still not the woke take you think it is. What is morally superior about the Sense of Sight. Is it impossible to understands themes and motifs through the wicked ear

i think what people mean (at least me specifically) is that usually listening to audiobooks results in lesser engagement with the text because people tend to listen while doing something else. reading is an activity that almost by definition requires your full attention (i don't know of anyone who can read and do something else at the same time). whereas people usually listen to audiobooks while driving, cooking, cleaning, walking, etc. these activities do pull at your attention, no matter how "automatically" you feel like you are doing it, and it does lower the quality of your engagement and comprehension.

i for example recommend my students that if they are going to read their books in an audiobook version, they should try to do it while sitting in a quiet corner and maybe with a notebook in hand to jot down notes and thoughts they come up with while listening. i actually took this recommendation from a visually impaired student who would sit down to listen to her audiobooks and record her notes in her computer.
