Thousands of acres of rainforest is being cleared to produce palm oil, used in popular Nestlé and Mondelēz brands
West Papua’s Indigenous people have called for a boycott of KitKat, Smarties and Aero chocolate, Oreo biscuits and Ritz crackers, and the cosmetics brands Pantene and Herbal Essences, over alleged ecocide in their territory.
All are products that contain palm oil and are made, say the campaigners, by companies that source the ingredient directly from West Papua, which has been under Indonesian control since 1963 and where thousands of acres of rainforest are being cleared for agriculture.
More than 90 West Papuan tribes, political organisations and religious groups have endorsed the call for a boycott, which they say should continue until the people of West Papua are given the right to self-determination.
Raki Ap, a spokesperson for the United Liberation Movement for West Papua, which is overseeing the call, said: “These products are linked to human rights violations, in the first place, because West Papuans are being forced, with violence, to get off the land where they’ve lived for thousands of years, which has now resulted in ecocide.
“This is a signal to the countries who are dealing with Indonesia, especially those in the Pacific region, to take notice of who they’re dealing with and how they are basically allowing Indonesia to continue the colonial project in West Papua, the human rights violations, and also ecocide.”
West Papuans say more than 500,000 of their people have been killed by the occupation in the past six decades, while millions of acres of their ancestral lands have been destroyed for corporate profit. Indonesia, already the world’s largest palm oil exporter, is now breaking ground in West Papua on the world’s biggest single palm oil plantation, as well as a sugar cane and biofuel plantation that will be the largest deforestation project ever launched.
“West Papuans’, especially the ULMWP, position is very clear: we are a modern-day colony,” said Ap, speaking from the Netherlands.
“Indonesia hijacked the right to self-determination in 1962 when the Netherlands and Indonesia signed an agreement without any consultation in West Papua … After that, in 1969, there was a so-called referendum, which wasn’t fair, which wasn’t under international law, one man, one vote: just 1,025 men were handpicked at gunpoint to vote for integration to Indonesia.
“So this is the foundation of the Indonesia’s colonial project. When we became part of Indonesia against our will, basically the genocide unfolded.”

Summer sees both a drop off in donations and, at least for our trauma center, a spike in traumas. Trauma centers across the US are in danger of running out of blood for our trauma patients TODAY, which is very scary but, unlike much of the other scary national news coming across our screens these days, is something you can help fix immediately and directly.
We need ASAP donations of blood, for people to spread the word, and for manager types to help facilitate others' donations. All blood types are needed, but universal donor blood (type O) is especially dire.
Many things that previously made people ineligible have been rolled back. If you previously thought you were ineligible, please consider checking current guidelines!
While O- is the most dire need as it can be safely given to anyone in an emergency, all types are needed! Our emergent release blood is being pulled for patients who have a high chance of death if they don't get blood within the hour. Once they're stabilized, they can have their type confirmed and get blood of a specific, matching type released to them so that O- can go to the patients who need it most.
Canada is also in a blood shortage, not just the US. Even if you're not in the USA or Canada, maybe check locally, especially if it's summer where you are.

Some Toronto residents are demanding a one-year moratorium on two proposed data centre projects, as a neighbouring city has voted to block any such new developments for a year.
Councillors in Mississauga, Ont., voted Wednesday in favour of a data centre moratorium while the city studies their impact and how they would be regulated. The city will also consult residents, Indigenous Peoples and the industry.
On the same day, protesters gathered outside Toronto City Hall ahead of a multi-day council meeting that's expected to weigh motions seeking a closer look at the impacts of two data centre projects in the city's Etobicoke and Scarborough areas.

Stories about the lived experiences of queer people have often been cast to the edges of, or fully omitted from, our shared history in museums and archives. A review of RAM’s existing collections showed that our representation of 2SLGBTQIA+ Albertans was limited and one dimensional. These collections were largely donated by white, cisgender, gay men to showcase their community activism in the mid-to-late 20th century. These items make up a cornerstone of Alberta’s queer history, to be sure, but tell us little about other community members or even what these individuals spent the rest of their lives doing. What about queer joy and celebration? Grief and remembrance? Gender exploration and transitions? Night life? Family life? Community? Friendships and relationships?
With these gaps in mind, the Royal Alberta Museum put out a public call for donations of items that represent queer history and experiences in Alberta, in the hopes that we can collect items that better reflect the diverse lived experiences of our queer neighbours within the collection.
One of the first responses to our call for donations came via voice message, offering us a 1970s book about working with women’s groups found in a local little free library. I returned the call to gather a bit more information and discerned that while the book had some fascinating content, it ultimately had no ties to Alberta beyond its present location. In conversation, though, I learned this potential donor was Harper-Hugo Darling (they/them), a Métis queer historian, author, and podcaster in the Edmonton area with roots running through southern Alberta. Harper-Hugo mentioned that they’d spent time in Lethbridge and Fort Macleod in their youth (the latter being where they’d formed a Gay-Straight Alliance at their high school), volunteered at the Edmonton Pride Centre’s Trans Camp, and were in possession of a zine about pregnancy for trans people that had been published here in Alberta.
Hey all! Normally when I post for Mona's community aid initiative, I post about the communities of refugees she is helping. But today I went to Instagram to update you all and saw that she hasn't posted since April, and we hadn't spoken since then either. She hadn't messaged me updates like she normally does. I was very afraid. It turned out she had broken her phone during a displacement, and she hasn't been able to replace it due to the high costs. Mobile phones are a scarce and expensive resource in Ghazzah but they are a lifeline for the families there. And for Mona it is not just a lifeline for her family but also for the refugee community she has dedicated the last few years of her life serving. She cannot connect with her usual network of volunteers or access funds without her phone (she had to contact me through her mother's phone). Despite helping displaced refugees, her and her family are also displaced refugees also living out of a tent, and she cannot currently afford a replacement. Please please please help her get a new one so she can continue doing the life-saving work she has been doing. Chuffed link to support Mona.

Connectivity issues on your BlackBerry, cost of car repair, how to sync your iPad, what brand of noodles to buy: Third World problems. All the silly stuff of life doesn’t disappear just because you’re black and live in a poorer country. People in the richer nations need a more robust sense of the lives being lived in the darker nations. Here’s a First World problem: the inability to see that others are as fully complex and as keen on technology and pleasure as you are.”
Totally normal for a legitimate for-profit company to refuse to reclaim or stop running their products even after they're no longer being paid to do so. I'm sure it's very normal to just keep running your service for free when your contract's been terminated. Spending money to continue running cameras that supposedly no one is looking at is definitely not an indicator they are just run by the federal government to spy on everyone and only a wacko conspiracy theorist would think so.
I do want to mention that Canada has the Indian Act which previously forced Indigenous women to lose their Indigenous status if they married someone who didn't have legal status. If they divorced, they would not regain their status. This meant all land claims and other cultural protections (where any existed) would be forfeit. This was until 1985.

This survey studies sexuality education for people impacted by ableism. This means that the survey will ask if you are disabled. Consider answering the survey and responding “yes” to that question to make sure that your experience is represented. The researcher understands that there is nuance to this, but they want to help improve access to all. It is hard to know how ableism impacts everyone without representation.
You must be aged 18+ and born after 1989.
You must be able to read and answer questions in English on your own or with the help of an aide.
The survey is 10-20 minutes long; the exact length depends on what questions relate to you, your identity, and your educational experience. You do not have to finish the whole survey at once. The questions ask about identity, sex education coverage, sex education sources, how helpful you found your education, and life experiences related to sexual health, identity, and experience.
Survey responses will be used for dissertation research at Widener University and may be used for future publications and presentations.
