I have been pulling a lot of court cards lately in my daily readings, as such I thought it might be worth mentioning how I view these individuals as they show up.
When I pull a court card in my daily readings you might have noticed that I use the he/him, she/her, or they/them pronouns depending on which of the court cards shows up. I do this because, magickally speaking, I have a relationship with each of these cards, and as a Sorceress communicate with them as the very individuals they present themselves to me as. In a divination context though, any court card can, and does, represent any gender. This said, I find the court cards in divination align more with a person's personality regardless of their gender, sun, or rising sign, but they can still come to represent any one, or multiple, of these things.
Using the Prince of Wands as an example:
This Prince is a passionate, convincing, and creative individual, normally noble and generous but someone who might take a joke a bit too far, or gets themselves into needless conflict, just because they enjoy the drama. They take the piss essentially, they're a practical joker. They have a lot of energy and are enduring and strong, but seem to be constantly fighting against the odds. This is the kinda personality the Prince of Wands represents regardless of gender, so if this reminds you of someone but the gender doesn't seem to fit, it really doesn't matter, they are just acting as the personification of a specific kind of energy. This point is further made through the degrees of the zodiac the Prince of Wands represents: The Prince of Wands rules from the 20° of Cancer to the 20° of Leo and as such represents the rising sign of anyone born within this window, and the sun sign of anyone born between the 12th of July and the 11th of August. It's not like only people who identify with being a man can be born in these time slots, that would be absurd.
The Princesses on the other hand are a little more difficult to place strictly because they're not ruled by the degrees of the zodiac in the same way, they are instead the personifications of the quadrants over the North Pole. Obviously the same applies personality wise though, if the shoe fits, as the saying goes.
I have been speaking about the court cards in relation to the Thoth Tarot here, in regards to Rider Waite style decks there are no Princesses, instead we have Pages. As a Sorceress I communicate with the Pages as children, and refer to them as they/them unless they tell me otherwise. Divination wise, I read the pages again as kids, or those with a more fresh new outlook and childlike energy, and as I stated before when figuring out who they could represent, if the personality fits, don't box yourself in with zodiacs, gender, or ages.
