The reason why the twist in season 1 of the Good Place works so well is because of the nature of sitcoms. In sitcoms, comedy is built off of the inconvenience of the characters. Characters are put in the most outrageous, uncomfortable situation to maximize humor. Of course a couples' counselor and private eye walk into Eleanor's house right when Chidi and Eleanor are at their lowest. Of course Eleanor is chosen by Michael to uncover the secret she's been trying to hide. We don't question if it's really the good place, because that's what sitcoms are supposed to do. By revealing that they are in the bad place, the writers are essentially breaking the 4th wall. It's a sitcom within a sitcom. All the clues were right in front of you the whole time.

Do you guys think Virgil learnt the hissing thing from Janus? Do you think he feels guilty every time he does it because it only serves as reminder of their similarities and yet he can't bring himself to stop doing it, as if it's become an instinct for him? Or do you think he instead feels empowered by it because it's something he can use against Janus, like an animal making itself scary in order to defend itself against other scary animals? Like maybe it's something he has reclaimed for himself despite it possibly being a learnt behavior from the side he hates most. Anyone else think any of that or am I the only insane person here?
