For Benedict, asking Sophie to be his mistress, its a reasonable request. For Sophie, it just makes her realize her place will forever be outside of society. It’s the nail in the coffin of her childhood of thinking she would grow up as a noble!

Maybe it's because in all the other scenes (and seasons) there were always either pastels or jewels tones involved, be it because of the clothes or the environment. It highlighted the fantasy.

While with ths stairs scene, Sophie is dressed in a dark, plain dress, Ben is in a dark navy ensemble and the servants quartets are very sparsely decorated. There's a rawness to it, the reality of the fact that they are not immersed in the fantasy of the ton, the dreamlike world the upper class created for themselves.

They are in the real world, a world that can be cruel and lack joy and colour and they can be together only there, not in the glittering world of the ton.
