I sit in the grass, and I can barely breathe. Looking at the trees and the wildflowers that grow around such a natureless place, it gives me hope.

A spider crawls on my leg, and I allow it onto my arm. He crawls in circles around my wrist, as I whisper to it. I describe the wind in my hair and the sunset on the horizon. I tell him my stories and I send him my love.

He crawls into the grass and I am alone again, until a chickadee calls from a nearby tree. I call back in my own whistle like tune. We have a conversation, both of us understanding the need for a friend.

The sun sets on the trees, and a coyote calls a ways away. I call back. It approaches, and I reach out my hand-

“Marissa! Time to go!”

I open my eyes, to see my father packing up.

The ground is freezing, but I am afraid to move.

“If you think you can go behind my back-”

“She is just a kid Jo-”

“Dont tell me what she is Fran, you are no smarter than her!”

They wont stop. Its just back and forth, back and forth yelling. About me.

“She is her own pers-”

“She is a liar-”

“Well then shes her momma’s girl!”

“Like she could have turned out like you, Fran!”

“I trie-”

“YOU WERE NEVER HOME”

I am curled up on the cold theatre lobby floor, just listening to them yelling outside.

A figure in a black hoodie and Jean’s sits down next to me, “You ok?”

I gesture to the door.

“You’re delusionsal!”

“Says the control freak!”

He winces a little, but puts his arm around me.

“How long have they been there?”

I can barely stop my voice from shaking, “About…20 minutes.”

“And you’ve just been…sitting here?”

“Nowhere else to go.”

He grabs my hands and pulls me up, as I take another look outside.

“Maybe I should take my kids and leave”

“Maybe you should leave. ALONE.”

He puts his arm around my waist, and starts leading me away.

“Where are we going?”

“Away from here”

And he took me to his house. We laughed and joked the tears away. After that night, I knew everything was going to be fine.

But things arent fine.

Because that is not what happened, is it?

I’m sitting on the floor of the theatre lobby, unable to move, as I listen to them talk.

I lift my head up and watch as people walk past. My friends. My family. They barely acknowledge my existence. And that night it only gets worse.

So the next day I come to theater, I need someone. Someone who I knew cared about me. So I asked you, Black hoodie and jeans, if I could stay by your side for a while. You agreed and we discussed boundaries and everything was set. I was starting to feel fine. Wanted, even.

Then the day came.

Just like my own parents you shoved me out of your life.

Now I am alone.

Broken.

Abused.

With no way out.

And no family.

And no friends.
