I honestly think the age gap makes so much sense while also adding so many layers to Nicki/Nickistat relationship and characterization: Nicki is younger because Lestat is older and their tragedy is that Nicki could never be as old as Lestat gets to be in the show.

Nicki needed to be at least young enough to have been to Paris to study violin, despite the tragedy of it beeing already too late for him to learn it properly. Having already been to Paris it wouldn't have made sense for Nicki as a character to return to Auvergne and stay there until 30 like Lestat did. Auvergne was opressive for both Nicki and Lestat but Nicki would have ended it all so much sooner and drastically, had he been forced to stay.

Nicki doesn't endure like Lestat, he's trop fragile. But when they meet in Paris he also says this:

Because underneath his fragility there is also rebellion and defiance and an eagerness to upset those who wrong him, in this case his dad. Imagine how fundational this must have been for Lestat. Eventhough he's younger, Nicki still manages to be a mentor for Lestat, teaching him resistance and disobedience just like in the books.
