Their dynamic was for certain no longer Mother/son once he walked in on her, having screeching sex with a random bar man so loud he had stormed across a courtyard to complain, and she took hold of Lestat's vulnerability in that moment and continued to have her fun, that long night once upon a time ago.

"when I killed eight wolves... We were mother and son." And then they weren't. She wouldn't have it anymore. She wanted her freedom to be no mother, no woman, no wife, nobody's. She wanted to be free from it all and do as she pleased, and vampirism gave her what she assumed was that right. She believed she wasn't tied to anyone, any mortal moral, any thing that would get in the way of her freedom from a life of being a hated wife.

Lestat knew the coven wouldn't harm him. He was trying to save them. That was why he came. Not for revenge, as Louis thought, as all the vampires there thought. He came to find a way to save them. But Louis was too caught up in recalling his spotty memories that he didn't notice it. Like much of their relationship, Louis wasn't really listening to Lestat.
