you need to get it out of your mind that psychosomatic illness is just “making up symptoms” when it’s actually much more like your body is being actively poisoned by chemicals released from your brain
if you’re so stressed that you’re puking your guts up every morning, are unable to eat or keep anything down, you can’t look at light without feeling infinitely worse and feel exhausted and in pain all the time (or whatever your particular stress induced symptom set is) you’re not just feeling like that because you’ve willed it into being. your body is begging for relief from the constant barrage of stress hormones and it requires the fundamental source of stress to go away, not just distracting yourself from the symptoms
just because the root is psychological doesn’t mean the result isn’t an entirely physical process.
This and also "your body is desperately trying to alert you to the fact that stress is killing you"
Doctor, looking at my neck x-ray: “The muscles of your neck are in such spasm right now that your spine has lost its curve. No wonder you’re in such pain. What the heck did you do to yourself?”
Me: “I work on a computer all day.”
Doctor: “Ah. That will do it. Right, so here’s a script for anti-inflammatories and a muscle relaxer. Also try hot and cold on it, 15 minutes each, and then gentle movements between each round. You’ll feel better in about a week.”
Me: “In a week I’m still going to need to work on the computer.”
Doctor: “And here’s also a script for 6 months of Physical Therapy.”
Me: “In 6 months I’m still going to need to work at a computer.”
Doctor: “And take breaks and do stretches between meetings?”
Me: “They book me in back to back meetings where I work. I eat lunch at my computer. I have to excuse myself to go pee.”
Doctor: “…”
Me: “…”
Doctor: “Um… it sounds like this job is actually, literally, killing you? Can you possibly work someplace else?” *
———
*note: It wasn’t said as flippant advice, and the doctor was 100%. right. After I got a different job — which took a WHILE — it was in a different corporate culture, one that didn’t believe in filling the day with meetings. I was able to do the stretches I was supposed to do, and also walk at lunch, and my neck is much better now. Not everyone has this choice. But maybe, if your job is killing you too, start thinking about an escape plan. Your body will eventually turn you into a pretzel otherwise. Nothing psychosomatic about that.

Whenever I talk about how fandom can be used to radicalize people and people call that trivializing, I just have to think, how quickly we forgot Gamergate
GamerGate is literally what brought Breitbart News out of obscurity and made it the face of the modern alt-right. It’s a large part of why the 2016 election went how it did.
Sure was!
This shit made national news. It got addressed on Law & Order. It drove people out of their homes. It is not hyperbolic to say that it was a factor in turning fascism from something we ALL knew was evil into a "legitimate" political stance according to the American Overton window.
The link in the reblog above leads to a great video breaking down all of what was involved, but the tl;dr is: this was a far-right hate movement composed entirely of people who were radicalized in fan space. These were men who, going in, mostly had the popular level of a lot of biases, but were radicalized into a full-on fascist fervor by the fear that their leisure space, their hobbies, would be stolen or changed.
In my honest opinion, Gamergate should be remembered as a case study in how hobby drama can easily become a lot bigger than hobby drama if enough of the motivation behind it is based in real-world bigotry.
Part of the downfall of Gamergate was outsiders calling out the venue that started it for the petty bullshit it was, but that's something of a double-edged sword - now we barely remember that the impact was not petty bullshit at all. Those random-ass Just Some Dudes who got radicalized into fascism? Most of them are still fash; their regrets about their GG involvement mostly boil down to "I can't believe I wasted so much energy on how this hurts GAMING". The rise of Breitbart? Gave us the political hellscape we're currently still trapped in. Some of the people who they attacked only became stronger due to the backlash, but others - the less visible, smaller targets, largely POC - actually had their livelihoods ruined, and even the better protected targets who ended up better off on paper went through a LOT of shit that no person should ever have to go through.
So when I see people in fan space using queerphobic, racist, ableist rhetoric to defend their stake in fan wars, when I notice people hearing "hey maybe don't harass random queer strangers online over fandom bullshit, especially not at the behest of OTHER strangers whose motivations you do not know" as "YIPPEE I LOVE SEXUAL ABUSE" and slinging accusations straight up using the EXACT language of right-wingers proposing queerphobic legislation, or defending """""ironic""""" racist hate symbols in fanart in the name of "freedom of expression" EXACTLY like any alt-righter, no, that's not just "petty fan drama" anymore.
Just because you're gay, or trans, or disabled, or you self-identify as "a progressive" or "a leftist" does not make you immune to hate radicalization.

There are gonna be people who won't like hearing this but if you want to live in a world where mixed marriages, families, and adoptions (particularly POC adopting outside their "race") aren't maligned and discriminated against, then you have got to get more chill about seeing someone partaking in something cultural that you don't think fits the "race" you perceive them as.
It's a vague memory now, it was a vague memory even at the time I made this post, but I think what sparked this was remembering stupid comments I saw about a Chinese-American cookbook that were complaining about it being written by a white woman and then I looked the white woman up and the briefest research showed she was adopted as a child into a Chinese-American family and just....
*pinches nose*
Fellas, is it cultural appropriation to inherit your family's culture but you don't pass the blood quantum test?
All of you are literally just racist. You've come full-circle. You're working under the belief that people are supposed to "keep to their own kind" and that means the socially invented concept of "race", and "race mixing" of any sort is unnatural.
Spin the wheel. That's who's trying to kill you.
Spin the wheel again. That’s who’s trying to protect you.
(If you have zero idea about a name you got, spin until you see someone you recognize.)
Are you safe?
Absolutely not. I'm dead. 100% dead.
I might stay alive, but it'll be a really close thing.
I'll take some hits, for certain, but I should be okay in the end.
A few attacks might get through, but nothing concerning.
The attacker might be able to get in one lucky hit. If that.
I am the opposite of worried. I'm 100% safe.
…Look. I've tried picturing this. But I honestly don't know how to answer.
(I've run this poll twice before, expanding it significantly for the second run. With about a year passed since that second run, I thought it was time to add another couple hundred names to the list and have another go.)

I find it so odd that people get upset when I talk about being poly. they're so quick to share how deeply they hate the way I live my life as if I asked for their feedback on it. relationships are a big part of your life so naturally you bring your lovers up in conversation. if I mention having multiple lovers I'm not forcing you to do it. every time I hear "oh I could never do that" I wanna ask if its because that would require them to be capable of pulling at least 2 partners and they're clearly struggling with 1. cause then we can both be irritated. derailing the conversation to make rude remarks about my relationships that don't affect you in any way, shape, or form is so weird. I shouldn't have to avoid talking about the people I love to prevent being subjected to an annoying anti-polyamory rant. the poly hate is so puritanical and i'm tired of it.

So I was scrolling and saw this image in an article about the European heat wave,
And was like, uh, are you missing something there, buddy? Like all that red in northern Africa? Because that's a lot of red.
And I was going to give them the benefit of doubt, since I don't know much about the climate in Northern Africa, aside from Morroco and Egypt, which seem like really hot places, so you know, maybe it's normal there?
But nope, that's not the case:
Africa is struggling with heat waves and many countries on the continent lack the resources rich economies have to deal with rising temperat
Some selections from the article:
"The region has been experiencing some of the most intense heat waves in recent years, but in many cases they’ve been under-reported due to misconceptions about Africans’ ability to withstand them.
“Africa is seen as a sunny and hot continent,” said Amadou Thierno Gaye, a research scientist and professor at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, the capital of Senegal. “People think we are used to heat, but we are having high temperatures for a longer duration. Nobody is used to this.”
"The Sahel, for instance, has been heating at a faster pace than the global average despite being hot already. Burkina Faso and Mali, both in West Africa’s Sahel, are among countries that are set to become almost uninhabitable by 2080, if the world continues on its current trajectory, a UK university study found. Its people are especially vulnerable due to shrinking resources, such as water, and poor amenities, and a dearth of trees and parks means there are few options for places to cool off."
India is also suffering tremendous, record-breaking, fatal heat waves that are going conspicuously unreported by a lot of mainstream global events coverage.

Eight people accused by the Justice Department of having ties to antifa have been sentenced to decades in federal prison over a shooting out
You can support imprisoned people by sending them letters of support and money to use for the commisary and phone calls. Being in prison is expensive. Don't write anything that would get them in trouble. Prisoners' mail is read by guards.
their support website is at https://prairielanddefendants.com/
did tumblr delete my post
yeah, they did. I wrote up a big long post about the Trevor Project and the 12 hour charity livestream I'm participating in right now, and they deleted it. twice. We've raised over $50,000 for a legitimate charity but because it helps trans kids it gets deleted from the site
please share this if you can. so many amazing people have come together to make this happen.
if I make these links clickable they'll get deleted so please copy and paste them:

the man who owns and runs the thai restaurant in my town knows me by name. he is one of the kindest and most thoughtful men i know. i started ordering from his place back in january, which was when i got my fibromyalgia diagnosis. back then i was using a walker, had limited mobility in my entire body but especially my hands, and was very visibly in pain. i always ordered the same thing: yellow curry with no meat, potatoes and carrots only (i have texture and other dietary issues). he always made it a point to make sure i could get out the door and carry the food safely. he had his workers package the food so that it was easier for me to open. as i kept coming back and i told him a little bit about my health status, he would always encourage me to keep going. he told me about how the spices he used were good for inflammation and began to edit the recipe just for me so that spices that were even better for fighting inflammation were used. he’d give me extra portions and despite the fact that i would tip every time, i realized later that he never charged my card for them. as time went on and my condition began to get better, especially with the help of a physical therapist, he would make encouraging remarks and tell me how happy he was for me. the day i came in without my walker, he practically jumped for joy, and despite my insistence, he gave me my meal for free that day. i continue to make progress with my conditions and i continue to go to the thai place. this man who does not know me personally and who i hardly know anything about is one of my favorite people. it’s interactions with humans like these that make loving life easier. and his curry really does help my chronic condition. it’s comfort food taken to the next level.
This is what I think about when people ask what the meaning of life is
when you go to bed significantly earlier than usual, a little menu should pop up asking if you want Wake Up Early or More Sleep. and then you should get what you requested. that's my human body UI improvement for the day.
