Why hasnât this been done before?
You know why.
Second year medic, Malone Mukwende, has been working with staff members as part of a student-staff partnership project looking at clinical t

I hope this gets published
It is available for download as a pdf from their website. www.blackandbrownskin.co.uk/mindthegap
Hey, if anyoneâs curious, this IS making a serious impact â this handbook was taught as standard practice for my EMT license course, as well as several other programs. A lot of new providers are being taught this as a matter of course.
another crazy thing about WWII is the way they were making fundamental discoveries and tech improvements every six months and actually getting them from drawing board to the battlefield before the war was over, instead of spending twenty five years on a project to deliver a new helicopter or troop carrier and then cancelling it after spending a billion dollars and delivering nothing at all; stuff was simpler back then.
storywonker said: Probably a combination of government performing R&D themselves rather than outsourcing to companies that need to be paid, hyperfocus on the war effort, and willingness to nationalise anything that doesnât cooperate
I think thatâs definitely playing a role, although it certainly doesnât hurt that dieselpunk tech is basically just steel + engine, with barely any need for electronics and even more importantly no software
also absolutely no regard for occupational health and safety or ecological impact back then, which certainly simplified product development at enormous human cost.
also the whole culture dropping what theyâre doing to deal with this
Like, out of people involved in the DNA double helix, Watson was too young and Franklin I think didnât do war work. But Franklinâs boss, Randall, was a war hero for his innovations in radar, and her collaborator/enemy Maurice Wilkins, who shared the Nobel Prize, did wartime experiments to determine what happens to buildings in incendiary bombing. Francis Crick was designing underwater mines, in an arms race with German minesweeping technology
like⌠this isnât necessarily a good thing! It had a huge opportunity cost! But if all the best scientists are designing bombs instead of whatever research theyâd otherwise be doing, youâre going to get bombs
and hence the Manhattan Project.
The other thing you have to remember about WWII is that literally everyone in the Halls of Power at the time was on fairly large amounts of mind-altering drugs.
On the Allied side, most people drank like fish. FDR was fairly responsible about it as the President, but during his off time, he drank like a fish (his âHaitian Libationâ was particularly infamous). My book of âCongressional anecdotesâ is in a box right now, but there are so many stories about Congresscritters bailing off work to go get wasted that they make up a majority of the funny stories about Congress pre-1970. Stalin held mandatory dinners for the Politburo with forced drinking games, and Churchill was so notorious for excessive alcohol consumption that people debate to this day whether he was an alcoholic or just a man of his time.
And this was normal back then. Until the 70s, it was normal for most people to drink, to drink a lot, and to be able to function in society while mildly buzzed.
The Nazis, in contrast, had a bit of a weird straight-edge thing going on. They believed in clean living and tried to get alcohol out of their ranks.
âŚ.so they were all on meth. Every last one of them. They were all taking pervitin, which is essentially crystal meth. A lot of them were mixing said meth with cocaine, and some of them still drank on top of that. They think the Blitzkrieg went as fast as it did because all of the Nazi top brass was on meth.
Iâm not naiive enough to think that our dear leaders arenât on some kind of substance, but theyâre presumably on different ones, and so theyâre making different bad choices.
I needed this drag. Letâs change guys and not look back
working out your brain is a must!!
⢠hydrate it by drinking lots of water
⢠eat dark chocolate and blueberries and walnuts and salmon and other foods high in antioxidants!!
⢠play little brain games on your phone; I like wordconenct! anything that makes you think!
⢠read books. Itâs simple but necessary. Even better - join a book club, or read with a friend, so you can have discussions after. This will improve your reading comprehension.
⢠do puzzles - it doesnt have to be sudoku, I love playing Beat Saber on the Oculus Rift because it makes my brain have to match colorful patterns to physical movements very quickly!
⢠learn a new dance - even a tik tok trendy dance. Learning new dance moves are proven to strengthen synapses!!
⢠go bird watching, or foraging, or anything outdoors that requires you to explore pattern recognition and visual searching
⢠watch a movie with the intent of analysis - this is best done with a cinephile friend!! talk about tropes and symbolism and character growth
⢠cross stitch, or sew, or do anything that requires matching nimble hand movements to patterns
⢠play or learn an instrument!
⢠develop a consistent sleep schedule (or as close to consistent as you can get!)
⢠when eating, try to identify the ingredients and flavors youâre perceiving!
I hope this helps :)
I like how this went from me feeling like âhm why is this attacking me đ¤¨â at first, but feeling grateful seeing an added guide on a genuine expansion on a â how toâ work out the brain. This genuinely helps a bunch. People find solace in doing activities that get them through life by doing said activities of phone/tv or if thatâs all theyâve ever known in their life to get them through things + etc tho. However, this was very impt to point out. Slowly beginning incorporating things to work the brain in ones own time.

Why is it that every time I google something like "Are olives poisonous to cats" the top results are always like "Fun fact: Cats are carnivores! This means that they eat meat. There is no reason to include olives in a cat's diet. You should feed your cat cat food, which is dry or wet food especially designed for cats. You can purchase this at a store." like is there a single person alive on the planet who's googled "Are blueberry muffins safe for cats" because they're planning on switching their cat to a muffin-only diet??? No, I'm asking because the little bastard somehow popped open the packet while I was putting away the groceries and dragged one under the couch before I could react and now I need to know if I should call the after-hours vet. "Cats should not eat spaghetti." NO SHIT, SHERLOCK!!!! "Try to keep human food away from cats." i live in a studio apartment with a completely silent and permanently hungry apex predator who has the intelligence of a toddler and the desperate Machiavellian cunning of a creature who spent his formative months on the streets. He can already open doors and he is this đ close to learning how to open the microwave. He is stronger than me and covered in knives. So im gonna do my best but for the moment i just need you to tell me whether this yoghurt is going to kill my son y/n
I've been using the pet poison hotline's poison list cause it has a search function. It also tells you whether something is mildly, moderately, or severely toxic which can be very handy! It doesn't contain like everything but it might be a good place to start, it also includes plants for fellow houseplant lovers <3
Explore Pet Poison HelplineÂŽs vast knowledge on poisons by reviewing our pet poison list. Explore our top 10 poison and holiday poison lists
For plants specifically, thereâs also a wildly detailed set of posts and listings about toxicity on the old, wonderful, Plants Are the Strangest People blog
hey boy don't kill yourself. green's dictionary of slang is available online and allows you to explore 500 years of english vulgarity. you can search by part of speech, source, time period, etymology, and usage. there's a whole category for gay slang. they even have specific citations listed so you can see the exact context for yourself. boy did you know that in 1927 "to kneel at the altar" was slang for "to sodomize"
some other hits:
Princess: an effeminate and relatively youthful male homosexual or lesbian (1931-4)
Daffodil: effeminate young man (1925)
To throw a fuck into: to have sex with (1919)
Top sergeant: a masculine lesbian (1939) [âshe takes command of the girlsâ privatesâ]
Lily: penis (1919)
Wolf: sexually aggressive man (1847); a homosexual top (1918)
Soul kiss: a deep kiss, involving putting oneâs tongue into oneâs partnerâs mouth (1907)
Tom: a lesbian (1909); [in 'old tom'] prostitute catering to lesbians (1966)
Church mouse: a male homosexual who frequents crowded churches in order to fondle any potential sex partners. (1941)
Discover one's gender: to accept or acknowledge oneâs homosexuality (1941) / Lose one's gender: To return to living as a heterosexual
Minty: a masculine lesbian (1941)
Also a lot of early 20th century vulgarity is recorded in Letter from My Father, which is a collection of letters published by a man who's dad was, in short, a major slut and human disaster who wrote about his sex life for his son. It's insane. You can find copies of it online & it's a wild fucking read (literally!) and I think a really interesting look at the life of a person who goes against our stereotypes of what people in the past were "supposed" to be like.
Anyways feel free to add y'all's favs to this post. & if you use this for gay historical fanfic please share with the class
#OH THIS IS EXTREMELY EXTREMELY HELPFUL#writing#resources#saving for later#maybe i should move my 1920s story from '25 to '27 because..... bro..........
note for writers: these are dated to the first time they were recorded, not necessarily to their first use. I imagine for many of these, they came about naturally through spoken language before they were written down anywhere. This is especially true of more underground slang because it's probably being recorded (in ways we still have) the least. So if you wanna use a term but it's a little off date-wise, give yourself some wiggle room.
also gonna take this moment to highlight two more i found recently:
Best boy: a sweetheart, a boyfriend, a husband. (1893) [w the obvious equivalent term 'best girl']
Honeydripper or honeydrips: a sexual partner (1917)
Like. Honeydripper?????? That's so horny I can't stop thinking about it. We need to bring THAT back
updates to miscellaneous page - added link to green's dictionary of slang

we gotta get back to torrent distribution, i just watched someone eat eight grand in bandwidth charges because they ran a direct-download piracy site with local file hosting through cloudflare. torrents were invented literally for this exact reason
torrents work like this
i have a file or folder on my pc that i want to share with other people. let's call it gayshit.mp3
unfortunately gayshit.mp3 is 750mb and im not paying for discord nitro so i need another way to send it
i put it into qbittorrent and it makes a torrent file. this is essentially a very small file that points to gayshit.mp3 so other computers can find it. kinda like a treasure map
i send this tiny file to my friend, who loads it into qbittorrent. their computer takes a moment to find mine over the vast expanse of cyberspace and then (as long as my pc is running and the file is still where it should be), it gets copied from my hard drive to theirs
this is the cool part: if somebody else loads that tiny file, they can download it from both of us. if i'm offline but my friend is on, the third person can still get it. this also means that if two people have separate halves of the file, they can download the other half from each other. as long as some combination of people have the pieces between them, they can all have the whole thing.
crucially this does not require a server!!! you can just upload the file to a few people and as long as they keep it, it's still accessible. as long as somebody, somewhere is still connected, it's available forever. the only way it goes away is if everybody disconnects from it.
please learn to torrent
An expert guide to get started using torrentsTorrents are one of the most popular forms of file sharing on the internet, accounting for over
always use qbittorrent, do not use bitorrent or utorrent.
In the final weeks of World War II, as Allied forces advanced deep into Germany, the SS frantically evacuated concentration camps to hide evidence of their atrocities. Between April 6 and 10, 1945, three trains carrying roughly 2,500 Jewish prisoners each were sent away from the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Their intended destination was the Theresienstadt ghetto in occupied Czechoslovakia.
Many passengers on this specific train belonged to Bergen-Belsenâs âexchangeâ section. They were prisoners holding foreign papers or citizenship with neutral countries, kept alive by the SS as potential bargaining chips for German prisoners of war. Because of this status, they wore civilian clothes rather than striped camp uniforms.
After a grueling six-day journey with little food, water, or sanitation, the train became trapped between advancing front lines near Magdeburg. Fearing the approaching American military, the Nazi SS guards abandoned the train and fled into the night.
On Friday, April 13, 1945, a scouting mission consisting of two American tanks from the 743rd Tank Battalion and troops from the 30th Infantry Division encountered the stalled train.
The photograph, taken by US Army photographer Major Clarence L. Benjamin, captures the raw, overwhelming rush of emotions as the prisoners realized they were finally safe. In the foreground, a 35-year-old Jewish mother from MakĂł, Hungary, clutches the hand of her 5-year-old daughter. Her face portrays a powerful, complex mixture of relief, joy, and the lingering trauma of what they had endured. Behind them, other survivors stream up the embankment away from the train cars, smiling and weeping as they run toward their liberators.
For decades, the photograph remained a famous but anonymous symbol of Holocaust liberation. It wasnât until 2017 that researchers and journalists from Haaretz officially confirmed the identities of the mother and daughter. The little girl survived the war, returned to Hungary, and was tracked down as an elderly woman still living there.
The photograph titled La boda de los milicianos (The Wedding of a Militiaman and a Militiawoman), capturing the marriage of the Republican defenders Alfonsa and Ernesto, is one of the most poignant humanizing images from the opening months of the Spanish Civil War. Captured on October 18, 1936, by the renowned Spanish photojournalist Alfonso SĂĄnchez Portela (often known simply as âAlfonsoâ), the image stands in sharp contrast to the typical, grim combat photography of the era.
In October 1936, the Siege of Madrid was intensifying as Francisco Francoâs Nationalist forces advanced toward the capital. Tens of thousands of ordinary citizens, men and women alike, known as milicianos, joined left-wing union and political militias to defend the Second Spanish Republic.
Amidst the existential dread and chaos of impending battle, Alfonsa and Ernesto decided to marry. Rather than traditional bridal wear, both the bride and groom are wearing their utilitarian miliciano overalls (monos), which served as the standard wartime uniform for the citizen-soldiers.
The photo captures a fleeting moment of joy, tenderness, and normalcy. The couple is surrounded by fellow militia members, celebrating a union formalized under wartime emergency civil laws rather than church sanction.
SĂĄnchez Portelaâs photograph became a powerful symbol of the Republican resistance, showcasing the youth, idealism, and shared equality of the men and women fighting side by side on the front lines.
Like many anonymous fighters captured in wartime photojournalism, the ultimate fate of Alfonsa and Ernesto after the brutal three-year war and the fall of Madrid in 1939 remains unknown to history. Today, the original gelatin silver print of this historic moment is preserved in the permanent collection of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina SofĂa in Madrid.

âWe chose the term âasexualâ to describe ourselves because both âcelibateâ and âanti-sexualâ have connotations we wished to avoid: the first implies that one has sacrificed sexuality for some higher good, the second that sexuality is degrading or somehow inherently bad. âAsexualâ, as we use it, does not mean âwithout sexâ but ârelating sexually to no oneâ. This does not, of course, exclude masturbation but implies that if one has sexual feelings they do not require another person for their expression. Asexuality is, simply, self-contained sexuality.â
â The Asexual Manifesto, Lisa Orlando and Barbara Getz, 1972
Note the date, people:
Thatâs 1972
29 years before AVEN was started online,
and 47 years before the present.
And thatâs only the date that Manifesto was written, so asexuals as members of a community must have existed at least some time before that.
So, no: we are not just Tumblr trenders. Get out of here with that.
supporting my asexual friends and foes by rebbloging this
Itâs 50 years this month since the first version of the Asexual Manifesto was written. Aces have been writing about our experiences under this name for at least half a century. We are not an internet fad.
