Since I've been getting some followers whose intentions I am not entirely sure about, let's make this very, very, very clear:
I am an Israeli Zionist Leftist Jewish woman.
If you have a problem with any or all of these words, block me now and spare me the effort of blocking you. I check every single one of my new followers, and I block liberally if I feel you might be hostile. All hate messages are deleted on sight without reading.
Highlighted Posts - Serious Topics
Link for the fandom topics post.
For the sake of convenience, I've decided to make two massive posts concentrating all of my most important posts on various topics. These are my most popular posts, my favorite posts (i.e. not necessarily popular but they should be! Just kidding. Or not...) and my best comments on other people's posts that are valuable enough to be mentioned here (in my opinion obviously...).
The posts are separated into subjects, and each has a comment in brackets denoting what type of post it is: an analysis relating to real world issues, meta for fandom stuff, and jokes when it's, well, jokes, plus occasional ones that are self explanatory. Both subjects and Types might overlap. It seems like there might be a limit to the number of links per post, so I've divided them into two groups - serious topics posts and fandom posts.
Beside these posts, I have many others I made or commented on that were just not important enough to include here, as well as literally thousands of amazing and fascinating posts I've rebloged from others, but mentioning them all here is of course impossible. It should also be mentioned that often specific reblogs might have valuable notes on them on chains of reblogs, so keep that in mind.

So, there's a whole thing going on right now in the fandom, which I am very glad to only be aware of from the sidelines (thankfully my metas never garnered enough traction to attract many haters), but I am genuinely confused as to why, in this day and age, is this sort of thing still, well, a thing?
Let me tell you a tiny story. A couple of years ago there was a bit of a kerfuffle with a couple of users saying some nasty things about Katara, camouflaged as criticism. They were very mean and quite cruel to others and just generally shitty. It really pissed me off. Enough so to make me sit down and write more than a thousand words and counting breaking down their "criticism". And then I stopped. I figured out every single detail of why they pissed me off. I also figured out why they came to say what they said, even if they chose to be assholes about it. But most importantly, I figured out that it was absolutely not about me and most definitely not for me.
There is a great big difference between having an interesting conversation with people you might not agree with on certain topics, I've had my fair share of them here, but these are conversations, they start from a point of listening, of discussing. This wasn't it. There was no one on the other side to talk to. It wasn't about me and it wasn't for me, and most importantly it sure as hell wasn't worth my time, my effort or my patience.
So I did the only logical thing I could do - deleted the thousand word plus think piece, blocked them and moved on with my life.
So we are here now, and I am genuinely asking all of you - why aren't you deleting, blocking and moving on? Who do you think you're talking to? We all know there is no one listening on the other side. I get wanting to vent, I sure do that a lot, but why draw them in when the only thing they want is literally to annoy you and waste your time, or worse? A troll only exists when they have an audience. A troll can't troll people who don't respond and who've blocked them.
The internet is a wonderful magical place with a wonderful magical button that's called "block".
Quick question, if I make a deal with the devil but my culture doesn't have a hell, do I still go there? Is it like a smart way to trick your way out of damning your soul but still getting your reward or will they have to transfer my file over? Like, will they get a notification about my deal and be all annoyed that they have to deal with this just before lunch? Do they run on a similar CRM software? Will they have to do it via fax instead? Does hell have a fax? I feel like hell has a fax. What if it's not the devil but just an entity from a different culture than mine? Still fax? I need to know if my deal is a bureaucratic nightmare to someone. Theoretically, of course.
The problem is that there isn't much else to talk about when discussing Katara in LoK, because she doesn't do anything else--and she doesn't even get the respect of being able to heal a single significant injury, which adds to the insult of her being sent to the healing huts for the rest of her natural life.
I genuinely would have loved if literally any facet of Katara's personality was respected, but it wasn't. She doesn't get to act as a respected matriarch for her people (in fact, she isn't even present during the Civil Wars episodes where one would think she'd have the greatest chance to at least give one of her famously inspiring speeches), she doesn't get to act as mother or grandmother (she watches sadly as her children pick on each other, and Meelo doesn't even recognize her in the pilot implying that the grandkids haven't been taken to visit in years), she doesn't get to lift a finger to protect or fight for her family (and don't bring up her age, that doesn't stop Zuko or Toph and it didn't stop Bumi or Pakku back in AtLA, either!), she doesn't even get the respect of being the person who knew her own husband best (Korra, who was raised by her! tells Zuko that he knew Aang better than anyone), she doesn't get a single statue, she doesn't get a single major accomplishment recognized (except getting bloodbending outlawed, but since she's absent from the flashback to the one bloodbending trial that we see, it doesn't count).
I suspect people focus so much on her being a healer and nothing else precisely because, in the original show, she says explicitly I don't want to heal, I want to fight.
Thatโs not the point Iโm trying to make though. My point is that the fandom never seems to bring up how good of a healer Katara is and how important it is to the narrative unless itโs to complain as to how LoK reduces her to being nothing more than that. Iโm not trying to slander Korra with this post, this is focused on the fandom.
Which narrative? If you're talking about ATLA, healing is a major part of the analysis and appreciation of Katara. If you're talking abot LOK, then it is absolutely not even a little bit important. She fails. Constantly. She never gets to heal anyone. That's essentially the only excuse for her presence in the entie show since she sure doesn't do anything else, and so they could be all shocked when "the greatest healer in the world" can't do anything, but they forgot to show even a shred of her being so great in the first place. That's the whole point of the criticism. Unless @firelxdykatara and I don't understand your original meaning, I don't really understand how that isn't relevant when talking about her healing abilities specifically in the context of LOK. If you have examples you could point out of people talking negatively about Katara's healing within ATLA-only context that might help us understand your meaning if we are wrong.
Okay, I think I misspoke with the LoK Katara specifically. I made this post because I saw a TikTok edit of Katara and practically all the comments were โand sheโs reduced to a healer!โ. I feel like they donโt know/donโt care to discuss her character outside of saying that over and over again. Iโll be honest, I donโt have examples of an ATLA-only context, and I didnโt expect anyone to reblog it. I donโt think I shouldโve tagged it with anything, I shouldโve just left it blank.
That's okay, I think I might understand better now. I don't know this specific edit so I can't comment on it. I think it has to be talked about when the contex is greater than just ATLA, but also it should be said that once LOK came out it became a bit difficult to not discuss the entirety of her treatment by the creators... I do understand though how it could be frustrating to only talk about that.

I feel like a day will come and we'll be able to talk about the fact that probably not a single US-based english-written book about greek myth was written by a greek person and also that probably not a single US-Hollywood movie/show about this culture was made by or featured greeks, but it is not this day.

Hi. Public libraries are for the public. They are for the public. Not for you specifically. They exist to serve masses, not individuals. You, as a member of the public, can benefit from public services, but they do not exist to cater to you personally. You are not supposed to find every single book you want to read in your library. You shouldn't find every single book you want to read in your library, because every single book you want to read is money not spent on a book someone else wants to read that you don't. And that's okay. It's okay that it won't answer all your needs. It's not supposed to. It's supposed to benefit the overall needs of the public. When you take a bus you don't expect the driver to drive the fastest route possible to your stop, because you know the bus has a designated route and stops and other people are using the bus just like you, because it is public transportation not me transportation. We cede some wants and needs and conveniences to get something in return, something that isn't necessarily the best individual choice, but is the best collective choice. We benefit from it, even though it isn't tailored specifically for us. It's okay to want more. It's okay to ask for more. It's okay to request your library to buy specific books you want. It's also okay to get books from a store. It's especially okay to vote for the politicians who will increase public services' funding. It's okay. But please. Stop criticizing public services for what they aren't. See them for what they are.
Worst part is itโs not even a prominent character, itโs an unnamed background character who is mentioned a total of two times. TWO. And THIS is what weโre all up in arms about? WHO CARES JUST DONโT READ THE BOOK IF YOU CANโT STAND THE IDEA OF ISRAELI PEOPLE EXISTING.
This entire "discourse" is just absolutely fucking unhinged, and the best part of it is all the "rational" defenders of Kuang who are like "you guys, you haven't read the book yet! Maybe the Israeli will be depicted as a bloodthirsty baby murdering colonizer who uses and abuses east asains? We need a little nuance here...". Like. Zero irony. A hundred percent candid.
It will never not shock me how english speakers just don't know the word Chatain to describe the shade of hair between brown and blonde and so instead developed their whole personality around their obsession with the bright blonde shade they had when they were five years old.
Hey, I'm saying this as a very much abled and fully hearing person, people making videos of only their upper face with no subtitles isn't cute or relatable or laid-back or some other bullshit, it's frustrating, annoying and beyond inaccessible.

"AI usage in the publishing world should be criticized and stopped" and "it is not okay that marginalized authors are held to higher standards and pay higher prices for AI usage in publishing" and "just because the enforcement of anti-AI measurements is not equal across the publishing industry doesn't mean it shouldn't still be enforced" can be and are all true at the same time.
While we always need to talk about discrimination, we cannot accept inequality in moral or legal enforcement as an excuse for committing moral or legal transgressions. โThey did it so why can't I?โ is not the high horse you think it is, and โothers did it but only I'm getting criticized for itโ is important to recognize but is still not an excuse to do it.
Okay but characters going into an ancient place only to realize too late that the security measures they encountered weren't meant to keep intruders out but to keep somthing in is **chef's kiss**
I'm sorry, apparently I've been living under a fucking rock... Are you telling me they're making a remake of the remake of the original Tomb Raider? And if I may ask one more thing - why. the. fuck. are. they. doing. it. ?.

Iโm so happy to find someone else in the ATLA fandom who is pro-Israel! Hello, fellow Zutara shipper here ๐ Believe it or not, I know a few other Zutara shippers who are Zionist but unfortunately we all kind of keep hush about it. I canโt really stand much of the ATLA fandom anyway, so much drama and moralizing.
Glad to be found ๐
To be honest, I'm not very active in the fandom anymore, or any fandom to be honest... Being Israeli and Jewish online has become a very lonely experience, with every new fandom becoming a landmine field of disappointment. I've blocked hundreds of people here, I don't even know how many of them belong specifically to the ATLA community, but I assume quite a few. It's hard to really get into new stuff without a community, since it's the joy and love and even anger of the fans that stoke the fires of passion in a piece of media.
All in all, the only thing I support is peace and prosperity to everyone and basic rights to all of us, and that makes me a monster to them. I'll just post to the void and my fellow evil zios instead ๐คทโโ๏ธ๐
Regarding ATLA though, time is also a factor. When you've talked about a single piece of media to death for almost a decade you really kinda don't have anything left to say... I still reblog nice art from time to time!
I haven't talked about this subject in a post about ATLA so far. I wonder if I'll have to block some more people after I post this ๐
Yaas western influencer! Make that funny video about living through war! You're so funny! Such acute observations about world affairs! You're so... oops. Hold on to that thought, gotta go into a bomb shelter real quick, be back in a few. Yaaaaaaaas! So funnnnnyyyyyyy! Dance through world war three little influencer! Dance! Dance. dance
